Flight 1 - Dégustation (5 Notes)

  • 2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Sit down tasting. Classically, unmistakably Vosne with red cherry and berry everywhere plus savory Asian five spice. Starts out as bright and elegant with good weight and soft textures; wine then opens and expands from there, picking up weight, even if not quite to the level typical of this wine in the very best vintages. Drinking well this young, but certainly even better from 2025 forward.

  • 2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Sit down tasting. Riper yet with the same bright red berry and cherry, more floral and spiced than Grands-Echezeaux, especially on the palate. Starts and finishes with considerable power, yet this easily and gracefully maintains an elegance and finesse. This tightens up slightly on its long(ish) finish, showing clear further upside to me. Young vines are still excluded in the assemblage (going into the 1er), resulting in an approximately 40yo vine age. Aubert says this vintage is "not shy." Better from 2027.

  • 2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Sit down tasting. Once again unmistakably Vosne-styled with its Asian five spice character, but both bigger and more density than Romanée St. Vivant. At the same time, it is also less easily accessible or pleasurable at this point in time, with lots more structure from middle-through-finish. A very long finish is not perfectly harmonious today but is hinting at the wine's great potential, 2030 forward.

  • 2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Sit down tasting. Here is a completely different aromatic start, overall darker fruited with sweeter baking spice and more apparent substance. Similar on palate, with also more tannins and overall structure. There is no doubt about the exceptional material concentration here, I just felt the wine was glaring angrily at me for bothering it at this point... although an explosion of brightness and elegance comes through on the finish. All that said, this is unquestionably Grand Cru Vosne of the highest standard with every bit of its character, with the La Tâche typicality just waiting to emerge, 2032 forward.

  • 2017 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée-Conti Grand Cru

Sit down tasting. Intensely spiced and perfumed with a broad array of red and black berry aromas and flavors. Shockingly, this is much more approachable than La Tâche today with its greater intensity working more harmoniously with its silky structure. A seamless beauty that will slide gracefully from youth to maturity, I would see this drinking at its peak from 2032 - 2067, evolving and unfolding through those decades, all without really being a particular powerhouse.

Flight 2 - Déjeuner (6 Notes)

  • NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 161eme 92 Points

    France, Champagne

In magnum. Rich from start-to-finish with excellent brightness and focus. Much better now vs when last tasted 5 years ago, but these age so gracefully in magnum.

  • 2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Bâtard-Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

First of two bottles tasting with lunch. Rich and unctuous stone fruit comes across as floral and spiced on nose and palate. But this was fully, fully mature. While many Grand Cru 2014s still need time, this bottles would not have rewarded further cellaring. The second bottle....

  • 2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Bâtard-Montrachet 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

Second of two bottles tasted with lunch. This was had a similarly rich and enticing profile, but much more energy and length. Much more like the bottles tasted at this same event in 2018.

  • 2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

First of two bottles tasted over lunch. Fully mature aromas and flavors were so mature that I would have thought it from an underripe vintage in the 1980s if served blind. Which is not to say it is bad, just very advanced, even while still showing lots of red cherry and baking spice that I would expect from Vosne. Good weight and length. Second bottle was quite different....

  • 2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Second bottle tasted over lunch was quite different than the first. Fresher and more intensely Vosne-spiced, this seemed around the right age, but was less fully composed and layered vs the first bottle. Still very tasty and enjoyable.

  • 2007 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru

Two nearly identical bottles were tasted over lunch, this note applies to both. Bright red cherry and berry start-to-finish with more savory (than sweet) spice. Moderate mature, certainly age appropriate for this type of vintage, giving an overall charming, elegant, layered combination of aromas and flavors. Not a powerhouse vintage for La Tâche, but there is so much here if you are paying attention.
