  • First time trying DRC. So good! Elegant yet complex. Rose pedal, oak, a bit leathery. Long finishing. Super floral and vibrant on the nose. Amazing!

  • René Engel: 00398/15136, blind but almost everyone got it right. So much more accessible than the magnum drunk last year, candied and clean purple fruit mixed with so much DRC spice, almost like crystalized whole cluster fruit, with just enough earthiness and structure to guide everyone to the answer. Vintage of great quality and ease to just drink. 94-95

  • Generously provided by one of our dining companions. The 17 GE has the delicious trademark young DRC stems and was rather phenolic / reductive upon opening. Certainly in another zip code of maturity when compared with the other bottles on the table.

  • No.03533/15136

  • Pop and rest for an hour, but it was ready to go right on opening. Such a charming and approachable wine right now with beautiful, bright, red fruits, polished mouthfeel and a layering of hoisin and baking spice. Doesn't have the depth found in the '17 RSV or LT, but also considerably less expensive. This is really in the sweet spot for early drinking.

  • Consistent with prior TN. A great young DRC to even drink now if you see it on a list. Side by side the DRC 16 RSV it was clear which is the wine to drink young (if you must)... 17s are just lovely and DRC seems to have nailed the vintage.

  • Definitely singing tonight. Much more open and forward than the bottle. I tasted in January. So delicious right now.

  • Close your eyes and step into a rose garden while someone is holding a high quality dark chocolate near your nose - that’s the nose you get after an hour plus in of opening this beauty. Mind spinning whole cluster, good fruit density here for the vintage especially and measured alcohol. It’s my cup of tea really and speaking about tea once you give this another 1-2 decades and it reveals those tell tale tea notes it should be a killer. Lucky those who own it. 2035+ for sweet spot drinking.

  • No need to overthink, it's open and delicious. Stems, polish and precision. (12167/15136)

  • Oh so good. Huge step up from Corton in terms of aromatic complexity, balance and polish.

  • This wine had a subtle but beautiful nose but was probably the most closed of the DRC wines tonight. With more air this too evolved into a gorgeous but more structured wine. While I m happy to drink this at this stage of evolution, this could do with a little more cellaring and will be stunning in the coming years.

  • Early drinking workstation the moment. A first bottle, though, a little dumb Phase muted. But a second bottle excellent with red fruitsand spice.

  • Dark and dense. Excellent depth and balance. Brooding spice. Wasn’t singing like the Ech was tonight.

  • 17 Vintage once again shows its greatness still young but certainly drinkable.

  • 2022 Excellent Burgundy Adventure; 10/31/2022-11/6/2022 (Burgundy): Explosive nose displaying perfectly ripe black fruit, blackberry, blackberry concentrate, black cherry, perfume, rose, a hint of stem, licorice, Asian spices and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of generous opulent black fruit, sensual, rich and fluid, exceptional balance and precision, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long perfectly ripe black fruit driven finish with perfume and Asian spices at the end. Although youthful, this is a hedonistic wine.

  • Magnum 00068/15136. Screaming Vosne with pure cherry spice and classic woodiness. Lifted, pure, voluminous and substantial on palate. Probably quieter than the Corton at this stage (understandably, this is a magnum) but certainly capable of greatness. Decanted portion was very perfumed indeed. 94-95+

  • Dégustation Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Verticale 2017, avec Déjeuner (1243 Bourgogne Society - Beaune): Sit down tasting. Classically, unmistakably Vosne with red cherry and berry everywhere plus savory Asian five spice. Starts out as bright and elegant with good weight and soft textures; wine then opens and expands from there, picking up weight, even if not quite to the level typical of this wine in the very best vintages. Drinking well this young, but certainly even better from 2025 forward.

  • decanted for several hours. Alexander the Great birthday bottle (again)
    nose - pepper, spice
mouth - quite fresh, lively, with a vein of celery running through it. the fruit is there but lingering in the background, and certainly more subdued than the Ponsot Chapelle Chambertin that was had immediately prior. Today a wine of elegance, and I suspect with bottle age it will develop flesh. HOLD

  • Stem, spices, perfume - ingredients for DRC greatness. Alluring GE greeness, with irresistible intensity and freshness.

  • Complete DRC Vintage Horizontals 2017 vs 2018: Since Covid didn’t allow for a proper arrivage tasting last year, we tasted the 2017s in direct taste-offs vs their 2018 counterparts this year. All bottles were opened a few hours earlier, not decanted but we got enough time to follow each wine over 45+ minutes in the glass which allowed for proper aeration and analysis. A few observations: 1) The 2017s are disarmingly easy to drink, charming, soft and open. 2) The 2018 show more depth but will need more time to flesh out, open up and become rounder. 3) Best ever Cortons. Slowly but surely they grow into their allocation (not market) price. 4) The showstopping RSVs edge out the Richebourgs with the purest fruit expression vs raw and today a bit unintegrated power. 5) The La Taches and RCs are playing in their own category in terms of complexity but the RCs are a bit closed. 6) The Montrachets are fabulous with a sharp, complex and complete 2017 as a consensus WOTN and a 2018 which is a bit broader but still amazing.

TN: Very intense bouquet with a sun-kissed fruit core but not much more getting through. Much more interesting on the palate and a clear step up in terms of substance vs the Echezeauxs. Quite precise red and blue fruits, herbs, stems, crushed rocks, hints of burnt sugar. Sexy and elegant but a touch younger and wilder than the Echezeauxs. Fine structure and texture and a good length but this will need a few more years to further soften and integrate (and many more to peak). Promising, 94+ pts.

  • Btl #1009. Admittedly a premature assessment but the night called for such a celebratory bottle.

nose - rose, celery, red fruit spectrum (cranberry)
mouth - cornucopia of bitter red fruits. ripe fruit but i can sense the stemminess which I'm sure integrates with ten more years. Hold.

Terrific pairing with Cantonese roast duck.

  • After having the 2010 last year around this time, it gave the impression that maybe this was a wine to drink young from their lineup. If anything, this 2017 was even more forward. So inviting, rich purple pinosity, gorgeous and sexy yet retaining enough balancing acidity to stay upright. No escaping the ripeness and lushness, however. The fruit saturates the tannin here, never really having a chance to flex. You’d never believe how easy to drink this is. Similar to the 10’ had last December (though the 10’ was a touch fresher and also slightly better), this is just pure luxury. Though I can’t complain that this showed well after a decant, I might prefer to see this wine be a bit more strict.

  • Extremely young, of course, needs a it of air before arriving with chalky intensity, an abundance of playful, mature fruit, very much hitting the pinot-nerve. Infanticide, I know, still so much fun.
