Noizé

A couple of us thought it might be time to have a look at some of the Oregon wines we’d been buying over the past few years, largely untried until now. Flight 1 was served non-blind with a view to seeing if vintage variation was a significant factor — it seemed to make some difference, but on this one wine sample didn’t appear to be as significant as producer and style turned out to be in flight 3. Either way, BH Dijonnais showed well. The whites were served blind and showed very well. Reassured to see that things I’d particularly liked previously I still liked. Good to taste some new things too. Overall I thought the standard of whites was a particular high. Flight 3 was designed to be largely a 2014 horizontal with a few ringers thrown in. Producer styles vary quite a bit, and in general the wines can take some age. The 11 Tori Morr was nicely mature, as was the 13 BH Dijonnais, but otherwise the reds would all have benefited from further age. The 05 Laurene was disappointing though - previous bottles were more open but this was pretty tight, and a whole level of extra tannin over anything else.
Most wines were opened and checked after breakfast and then stoppered to be carried in to London immediately ahead of lunch. Huge thanks to Mathieu and colleagues at Noizé for accommodating the six of us — we organised it as a walk-around tasting before lunch and then enjoyed favourites from the tasting over lunch. A fun and instructive afternoon.
2013 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 91 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Light ruby to cherry. Fragrant and relatively delicate red fruited nose. Nice fruit, again raspberry with some persistence and a nicely fresh, minerally almost slightly herbal element on the finish that gives further complexity. Very attractive. ****

2014 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 92 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Similar light ruby to cherry. Richer on the nose, and the fruit more in the strawberry spectrum. Lovely texture in the mouth, creamier and plusher without being overdone. Long finish with the strawberry element to the fore. Still some ok and a touch of heft but it’s balanced and just about in check. ****

2015 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 90 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Again, the cherry side of ruby, but lighter and more translucent. Darker but less expressive red fruit (though very lifted strawberry when opened a couple of hours ago). Silky texture on entry. Nicely savoury, with a slight liquorice element to the red fruit on the finish. Opens up to become a bit surly. **(*1/2)

2016 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 92 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Light cherry to ruby at the rim. Richer and fuller on the nose again, though not as much as the 14. Strawberries in the red fruit mix, a reasonably savoury spine and bright finish. A little more grip on the finish. ****

2017 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 92 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Light cherry red. Vibrant. Strawberries and a little more lift on the nose. Vibrant and savoury. Some density to the finish, deceptively so. Attractive now but this should develop nicely. ****

2018 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 91 Points

Mid cherry. Savoury and spicy on the nose. Quite grippy, dark and savoury fruit. Tannin quite evident on the finish. This one does need some time. ***(*)

2019 Brick House Pinot Noir Les Dijonnais Ribbon Ridge 93 Points

Bright, vibrant cherry. Light and bright. Understated density. Long with a bright, savoury finish. Unsurprisingly even better with food. Lots of potential here. ***(*)
