Introduction

This was a small group of six celebrating the haunting night before Halloween (CV, BB, JG, CG, DS, KB). We had a pretty fantastic lineup of wines tonight! Thanks to everyone for sharing these beauties.

Pale salmon color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Very perfumed on the nose, floral, strawberry, mushroom, a little volatile. The palate has strawberry and red currants with a slightly sweet essence to the fruit notes, mildly oxidative, chalk, medium finish. 93 to 93+pts.

  • 2007 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Light gold color. Drank a glass over 2 hours. This was the first of the '07's I've had, and it certainly bodes well. Striking, and classic Defaix; a cornucopia of ocean and brine aromas, lemon chiffon top notes, really earthy and swampy, tart lemon, sharp lemon zest, long, minerally and penetrating. There is no better value at this quality in Chablis, period. Not to mention who else in the region waits until the wines are ready to release them. These are a treasure. Loved it. 94+pts.

  • 1997 Domaine Ponsot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Medium bricked red minus color, slightly cloudy color, 3mm clear edge. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Well this really struck me tonight. Intensely perfumed and complex on the nose; very earthy, dried forest floor, truffle, dried strawberry, red cherry, cigar, pencil shavings and spices. The palate is elegant and harmonious, dried strawberry, dried cherry, spice box, tobacco, sauvage, dried spices, all in a resolved, penetrating package filled with an inner perfume. Fantastic flight with the '02 Montille Pez side by side. 95+ to 96pts.

  • 2002 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Pèzerolles 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Medium red plus translucent ruby color. This got some slow-O time before serving. I last had this four years ago and it showed wonderfully. At the time I wondered if it could be any better. I'm not sure that it was better, but it was absolutely as good as it was then, and it was stellar then. Riveting red fruits, cherry, raspberry; ample damp forest floor and earthiness with a strong note of lilies on the nose. The palate has that class, purity and elegance not always found in Pommard; light weight yet deep in flavors, good acidity, pretty red cherry, purity, dried herbs, and long with round integrating tannins.

  • 1987 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Great dried herbs, smoke, cherry, lacquer, slowly opens to show dried red fruits, soil, earth and tar on the nose. The palate is surprisingly youthful, yet filled with complexity; ultra savory, dried cherry, cherry, tar, minerals, lacquer, dried herbs, polished tannins. Glorious.

  • 1992 Dalla Valle Cabernet Sauvignon 92 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville

Very dark red/purple color, 2mm clear edge Double decanted for 30 minutes. Some volatility on the nose, strong violet notes and dried spices, cassis, and earth. The palate shows cassis and plum, oak, full bodied, plenty of tannin still offers some pucker. There is a little bite on the back end and the alcohol comes through a bit here too. Still very good, but there's some signs it may be time to drink up. 92+pts.
