Mostly Bordeaux dinner

Six of us got together to drink a few Bodeaux wines.

All showed very well. the 08 DP rose was a bit sharper than ususal.

• 2008 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé 96 Points

  France, Champagne

  Expressive nose displaying pure sweet red fruit, raspberry, strawberry, rose, perfume, smoke copper, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered sweet red fruit, generous medium fine mousse, good energy and precision, bright acidity and strong limestone mineral, and a long pure red fruit driven finish with rose and copper at the end. This particular bottle seems a bit shaper than the previous two.

• NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Ambonnay Le Bout du Clos 97 Points

  France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

  Beautiful complex nose displaying mature sweet yellow fruit, peach, apricot, apple tea, caramel, sherry, marzipan, lanoline, honey, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, fine medium generous mousse, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long rich yellow fruit driven finish with marzipan at the end. Very “natural” wine expression, a bit of Vin Jaune. A friend finds it too oxidative/madeirized so YMMV. For my palate, really complex and unique style of Champagne.

• 2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut 97 Points

  France, Champagne

  Beautiful youthful nose displaying generous sweet red fruit, raspberry, cranberry, cherry soda, copper, grilled mushroom, a hint of sous bois, smoke, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, finely layered decadent red fruit, generous fine mousse, round, rich and warm but also showing good balance and precision, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with smoke and copper at the end. This is very Burgundian Champagne. I can’t wait to drink it again in a decade when sous bois truly blossoms.

• NV Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée Édition 168ème 96 Points

  France, Champagne

  Expressive nose displaying generous rich yellow fruit, cinnamon apple, lemon curd, honey, yeast, marzipan and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered generous sweet yellow fruit, rich, complex and precise, generous fine mousse, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with cinnamon and brioche at the end. This is drinking beautifully but can improve for another decade.

This was the Vandermeulen Bottling.

• 1947 Château Margaux Vandermeulen Bottling 95 Points

  France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

  Excellent fill. Still showing generous mature fruit, strong cabernet, a hint of crème de cassis, blueberry, iodine, iron, sous bois, sauteed mushroom, mint, bell pepper, lead pencil and scorched earth. Very good concentration, generous mature black fruit, silky and fluid, bright acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium long mature black fruit driven finish with lead pencil and ash at the end. The fruit is generous yet fades quickly in the mouth. Very interesting and nice showing.

  Expressive youthful nose displaying ripe black fruit, cassis, blueberry, lead pencil, cedar, tobacco, a hint of oak and earth. Medium concentration, finely layered black fruit, silky, slightly lean and angular, medium acidity, earthy mineral, still noticeable tannins and a medium long ripe cassis fruit driven finish with a hint of cedar and leather at the end. This is a solid LLC that is drinking beautifully. It lacks a bit of richness in fruit.

  Expressive nose displaying concentrated cool black fruit, crème de cassis, crushed blackberry, cedar, lead pencil, a hint of luxurious oak and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of intense cassis fruit, silky, beautiful detail and balance, bright acidity, strong mineral, very fine tannins and a long intense cassis fruit driven finish with lead pencil at the end. This nicely expresses the classic 96 vintage and the clean cassis driven Chateau style. It remains very youthful which to be expected.

  Initially a bit funky. Medium expressive nose displaying subdued black fruit ,crème de cassis, a hint of green, strong ash, lead pencil, leather and iron mineral. Good concentration, a bit subdued black fruit, silky and fluid, good richness, medium acidity, iron mineral and a medium long ripe black fruit driven finish with a hint of ash at the end. Although no noticeable flaw, I don’t think this is a well stored bottle.

  Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe concentrated black and blue fruit, crème de cassis, blackberry jam, blueberry, cabernet floral dust, light caramel, mocha, a hint of oak, lead pencil, sweet spices and limestone. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe black fruit, rich and generous, exceptional balance, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral, and a long intense cassis driven finish. This is drinking incredibly well in a youthful way.

  Expressive nose displaying sweet concentrated black and red fruit, crème de cassis, plum, black berry, strong lead pencil, cedar, caramel, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated black fruit, warm and round, very good balance, medium acidity, strong earthy mineral, and a long concentrated warm black and red fruit driven finish. This is drinking really well.

  Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe opulent black fruit, blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, black cherry, licorice, dark chocolate, floral dust, liquid smoke, sweet spices and mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of opulent black fruit, silky and airy, exceptional balance, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long opulent black fruit driven finish. This remains very youthful. The 00 Pavie is consistently expressive and hedonistic.

  Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

  Intense nose displaying intense black fruit, noticeable oak, chocolate, coffee ice cream and earth. Excellent concentration, packed concentrated black fruit, medium acidity, medium mineral, strong slightly dry tannins and a long intense black fruit driven finish with a bit of heat at the end. This is a Rioja in steroid.
