Thai and Riesling Night

I hosted a Riesling night at my girlfriend's Thai restaurant with much success. We started with drier Rieslings and decided that we should save and revisit the GGs at the end without food.. We paired the Thai food with the pradikat Rieslings.

  Limestone, stone fruit, citrus, on the cusp of dry and off-dry. Well balanced, long finish. Quite an amazing wine especially being much cheaper than Keller's other drier wines. Was one of the most popular wines tonight. Showing 92-93 with upside

• 2010 Larmandier-Bernier Champagne Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant Extra Brut

  Fairly atypical Champagne to my palate. Yeasty/toasty with unripe orchard fruit, apricots and citrus, buttered toast. Fairly aggressive mousse. 89-90 for me tonight.

• 2018 Wittmann Westhofener Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs 93 Points

  Germany, Rheinhessen

  [Thai and Riesling Night - Nine Rieslings]
  Saline, minerality, lean but still fully ripe stone fruit, white peach. Good concentration with a clean long finish. Quite approachable right now, but got better with time. This was showing better than the 2012 Keller Kirchspiel tonight in terms of fruit and finish.

  [Thai and Riesling Night - Nine Rieslings]
  Tasted a touch sweeter than the Wittmann. Riper stone fruit, peaches, citrus perfume, slight straw and hay. The sweetness adds a nice balance that wasn't showing in the Keller or Wittmann, age showing a touch of honey. Although not as concentrated as the Rheinhessen duo.

• 2012 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

  Germany, Nahe

  [Thai and Riesling Night - Nine Rieslings]
  Ripe sweet stone fruit, ripe and juicy yellow peaches. RS balanced with acidity, nice freshness to the wine. Rich Spatlese, a very good showing. Showing slight honeyed fruit character with its age. 93 tonight with continued maturation upside (94+).

  One of my WOTNs. Very prominent and intense ripe yellow and stone fruit, sweet honeyed peaches and apricot, big bold fruit enveloping the entire palate. Sugars are well balanced with acidity, despite the sweetness of the wine. Long long finish of golden fruit dipped in honey, lasts forever. Still improved with time and air. Matched amazingly with Thai food. 95+ showing

  Much more oxidative and advanced than the 2005 Prum. Also more advanced than my first bottle. Matches my old notes to a degree, but this died after a hour of opening. Chalking it up to bottle variation here.

  Still showing a lot of development and interesting characteristics. Slightly chemical on the finish, tons of oxidative notes. Dried sweet peaches and apricot, ripe tropical fruit, tastes botrytised with plenty of honey and syrup. Long sweet finish with some acid still kicking.

• 2012 Weingut Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs

  From Magnum. Opened up at the beginning to allow a few hours of slow ox. Showing slightly backwards, potentially in an awkward phase (magnum showing). Med+ intensity of orchard and yellow fruit, stone fruit, citrus, limestone/minerality. This was missing a bit of concentration for me, but still carried good tension with its acid as well as balance. Finish was shorter than expected, will give it more time to open up. 91-92 tonight, but I brought it home to see if it changes.
  
  Day 2: Opened up a bit more, slightly sweeter and a small increment to the finish.
  Day 3: Started to stagnate and die a little, but showing the best fruit intensity today. Really difficult to predict the evolution of this bottle.

• 2002 Paul Anheuser Niederhäuser Riesling 92 Points

  Germany, Nahe

  [Thai and Riesling Night - Nine Rieslings]
  Floral notes, blossom and spearmint, lean stone fruit, white cherry, minerality and slight herbal/green notes on the mid palate. Honeyed sweetness on the attack, finishes with lean orchard fruit. Good acid and balance, limestone and spearmint on the finish. Showing its age well, 92-93 tonight.
