Introduction

We've been thrilled with the 2010 vintage in Chablis for some time now, and we had been discussing doing a 2010 Fevre Grand Cru tasting for several years. We finally got around to doing at least a mini version of it with a nice comparison to a couple of Dauvissats as well. Six of us gathered at Oceanaire which is the perfect venue to do this (DM, SS, JG, ML, K/VB). Jessica was our server as usual and took splendid care of us. This was a wonderful display of top notch Chablis.

Flight 1 - Champagne (1 Note)

  • 2007 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 96 Points

    France, Champagne

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Does Taittinger ever miss, it sure doesn't seem so, regardless of vintage. This '07 is kicking a#% and taking names. Wow, this intense and powerful on the nose and palate, yet it has tons of lift and brightness and the ever present Taittinger finesse. Almond, pear, very toasty, great stone and chalk notes, brioche, with an intense bead of speedy bubbles. Damn, this is drinking great.

Flight 2 - Fevre Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light gold color. PNP, drank plus a glass over 2 hours. Brilliantly fresh, remarkable sea air, white lilies, pulverized oyster shells, ocean aromas, lemon and white apple in a nose that just keeps on going. The palate is clean and steely, lemon, white apple, brilliant limestone, very long with such elegance and a truly deft touch.

  • 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Pale gold color. Drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Cool lime and dry stone on the nose, strong Meyer lemon, intense, lime, and a little spice. The palate is tart, tart lemon peel, stone fruit, brine, and lime. Very pretty and long with a lime zest finish. Shows some flint later; though not quite as multi-dimensional as the Vaudesir it was flighted with.

Flight 3 - Fevre Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Pale gold color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Flighted the '14 and '10 together. Much like my note on a bottle four years ago. Fantastic nose again; explosive, crystalline and powerful, beautiful orchard fruits, more fruit complexity, swampy Fevre earthiness galore, saline, ocean, tons of lift, floral notes and zestiness. The palate is intense and concentrated, richer, powerful, zippy minerality, swampy crustacean infused earth, green fruit and citrus zest, with a sweet little nutty thing in the background. Damn, great acid, fruit and minerality; just a complete wine. The '10 is working its magic, and the '14 will needs some time to get here.

  • 2014 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light gold color. PNP, drank a glass plus over 2 hours. Drank this next to the '10. This is not as evolved yet, but shows all the characteristics to say it's going to get there. Earth, saline, lemon, tart, white melon, and a bunch of saline and ocean on the palate. Give this a couple years and it should kick it up another gear.

Flight 4 - Dauvissat Flight (2 Notes)

  • 2010 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 98 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light medium gold color. PNP, drank a glass plus over an hour. Drank in a flight with '10 Preuses. This was simply sublime; wow what an ethereal nose of Meyer lemon, ocean, spice, lime, woodsy, and a touch of lacquer. The palate exudes precision, full bodied and rich, with layers of citrus fruits, Meyer lemon, orange zest and Grand Marnier-like liqueur notes, and the dry extract and mineral intensity then just captivates as the level of penetration just rises. Thoroughly impressive, immense, and focused. Damn. 97+ to 98pts.

  • 2010 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Light medium gold color. PNP, a drank a glass over an hour next to the '10 Les Clos. Not nearly at the level of the Les Clos, at least not at this point. I think with the way the '10 Les Clos showed today, it will be a heard act to follow even with more cellar time. The power is there, showing more oak too which perhaps will fold in and give more clarity; plenty of dry extract and intensity is there, tangerine, lemon, shows the limestone, but it comes off a little bit awkward and not showing the elegance one would expect.

Flight 5 - Sauternes (1 Note)

  • 2001 Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Very dark gold color. Drank a small glass from 375ml. Sweet and caramelized, unctuous, honeyed, dense, apricot and orange syrup, apple peel, lychee, medium finish, maybe a touch sweeter than ideal. This bottle was more advanced.
