France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Blind in vertical. Sometimes this wine has been brilliant, sometimes not. Tonight's bottle was dark and advanced to start with an oxidative aromatic start. Flavors were fresher, brighter, and more interesting, but nowhere close to the wonderful 2005 and 2009 vintages in the next glass. And while this seemed to get slightly better with more air, it never lived up to the standard of previous great bottles.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Blind in vertical. Most tasters' favorite of the flight, and most were shocked when the vintage was unveiled. Floral with ripe stone and orchard fruits, this was perfectly balanced and went on and on to a very long, persistent finish. Excellent.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Blind in vertical. Powerful and still compact but with impressive concentration. This gets by on its sheer size and volume since it didn't come across as particularly brightened by acidity, even if nicely minerally. I will err on drinking my remaining bottles over the next few year vs cellaring long-term.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Served blind in vertical. Great color and fill. Charming and complex, but approaching its geriatric stage. It held up nicely through the evening and even freshened up slightly, but it was the laggard of a brilliant trio.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Blind in vertical. Brilliant old Burg aromas and flavors of mature cherry and berry with leather, cooked mushroom and braised meat, this kept unfolding and showing more dimensiomality each time tasted. This shocked everybody when the vintage was unveiled, except for Frédéric, who thought this was the 1977. The star of a brilliant trio.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Blind in vertical. Fully mature with plenty of definition still coming through. Good depth and weight. The only bad thing to say is that the 1977 vintage in the next glass was even better.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Blind in vertical. Black and red cherry with spice, faint mushroom, leather and rare beef. Ripe and dense but layered and complex at the same time. Best ever for this wine.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Served on its own, double blind. Charming combination of ripe red and black cherry with a firm core, and then ripe and mature again on its big finish. I correctly identified the vintage, but thought it might be Clos des Ursules based on its meaty profile, but the Gevrey 1ers were my "plan B." Exceeded what I would have expected.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
This slightly outshone the almost-as-amazing 2003 served blind in the next glass. Rich and wonderfully concentration, this is so enticing on every level, being both hedonistic and complex.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
Almost as great as the brilliant 2002 served blind in the next glass. Both rich, but this 2003 didn't have quire the same concentration and hints of evolving complexity. But still so much here.
