Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, only knowing our own wine. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that revealed. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought. In fact this easy setting where we taste the wines several times over 4 – 6 hours is the ultimate way to get a good impression of a wine.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2016 Château Lafleur-Gazin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Beautiful and aromatic bouquet with dark berries, sweet spices, oak, vanilla and some white pepper. On the palate a full bodied wine with a lot of dark berries, good acidity and fairly mild tannin. Give it 3+ years of additional ageing.

  • 2018 Château Lafleur-Gazin 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Complex bouquet with dark berries, sweet spices, well dosed oak and vanilla. Very friendly bouquet. On the palate juicy red berries, vanilla, a firm amount of good acidity and sticky tannin, firm but pleasant bitterness, sweet chocolate, creamy and round and some pleasant sweet impressions. Great length. Beautiful and luxurious wine. I like the 2018 a tad better than the 2016.

  • 2016 Château Gruaud Larose 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

The bouquet has a slightly rustic impression, dark berries and some graphite. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, cherries, vanilla, well dosed oak, beautiful acidity and sticky tannin. This wine will probably enter its early maturity stage at the end of this decade and will offer beautiful drinking until 2040+. For now 93+

  • 2016 Château Lafon-Rochet 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

In the bouquet dark berries and beautiful oaky flavors. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, a lot of good acidity and firm, sticky tannin. Blackberries, full bodied and juicy, but still extremely youthful. Without knowing from each other, another participant brought exactly the same wine. No-one identified that, possibly because the second bottle had a lovely slightly rustic impression as well as some cherries. Certainly a great wine with a great future. I will probably uncork one of my own not before the end of this decade. 92 - 93

  • 2016 Château Le Sartre 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan

In the fairly complex bouquet dark berries, vanilla and some graphite. On the palate red and dark berries, a firm amount of acidity and sticky tannin, some green (bell pepper) impressions and also a slight touch of sweetness. This wine needs more time in the bottle. See also my previous note.
