Introduction

A great way to start out the new year with a double blind wine tasting with friends. Wines 1-10 were part of the official line-up and then we had four back-up bottles.

Flight 1 - Official Double Blind Flight (10 Notes)

  • 1998 Maison Roche de Bellene Clos de la Roche

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Served double blind. High toned bright cherry profile, high acid, tart with soft tannin. I originally thought this was Nebbiolo but then the soft tannin suggest it is an older Burgundy. My initial call was '00 Barolo, but I was wrong.

  • 2013 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Served double blind. Some funk on the nose signaling Viognier in the blend and that this is from Cote-Rotie. There is a green stem/herbal note with a meaty, peppery long finish. Excellent wine.

  • 1995 Château L'Evangile

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Served double blind. Great nose of Bordeaux goodness. The finish is fat, plump, round and still has some tannin present. I called it St. Estephe, but I should have picked up on the Merlot on the finish and at least detected Right Bank. Blind tasting is a great palate equalizer.

  • 2010 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Cannubi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Served double blind. Classic Nebbiolo on the nose with some tar & leather on the grippy tannic finish. This needed food to show at its best. Now having had this wine, it clearly shows that the first wine in the line up was Burgundy and not Barolo.

  • 2011 Domaine Perrot-Minot Chapelle-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Served double blind. Black cherry, incredibly smooth & supple finish with a semi-sweet liqueur like finish. Definitely old world and Burgundian on the attack, however, the finish threw me off so I called it CDP.

  • 1995 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Served double blind. Incredible nose with classic Pauillac aromas of cedar, black fruit, anise, and Asian spices. Well integrated tannin with a very long balanced finish. Later found out this was served out of a 1.5L bottle. This producer and this vintage of PLC is what converted me into a Bordeaux lover back in 2004 when I had it for the first time. My WOTN #1.

  • 1989 Château Gruaud Larose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Served double blind. Immediately I knew this was Bordeaux and I loved the funky nose. The nose is what makes this wine. the finish is a bit thin and lean and there is still some austere tannin. Because the Pichon Lalande which came just before it in the lineup was the more complete and balanced wine, it ranked #1 for my palate and the Gruaud ranked #2. Found out after the wines were revealed that this was also served from a 1.5L bottle.

  • 2008 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana IGT

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Served double blind. Incredibly pure fruit, wonderful nose with a long, but tannic finish. I called it from Tuscany, but I was unsure of the varietal. This is an excellent wine and I ranked it #3 WOTN.

  • 2008 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Served double blind. This was a very confusing wine to me. It wants to be Italian, but there is a creamy sweetness on the almost overripe finish. I couldn't get over the sweetness which is why I couldn't call it. I wrote down new world Pinot only because I had to call the ball on something. I hope this comes around to its true character with more time in bottle.

  • 2012 Louis Jadot Grands-Echezeaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru

Served double blind. Delicious Burgundy with high toned, high acide Bing cherry fruit, wonderful minerality, with a firm backbone and tannins. Young now, but will be kicking with 5 more years in the cellar.
