Introduction

We had a group of 6 plus Joe and Nita hosting us (LI, LS, KB, BB, DM, CV/NV/JV). This was a really fun night with everyone contributing a food course. We had some pretty great wines and some excellent pairings. The chef's all did a great job. Thanks so much to the Vanderah clan for hosting us.

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 2008 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé Vintage 94 Points

    France, Champagne

Light salmon color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Splendid, spot on good, just like a bottle a month ago. Fresh bread, cherry, great autolytic character, suave, strawberry, poised, stone, medium body, long. Loved it.

  • 1990 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon

    France, Champagne

Medium gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Mature, deep, baked apricot, honey, oxidative, lemon confit, orange peel, spiced, white pepper. This was mature and showing more oxidation than I care for, but fans of old Champagne may really go for this. Unfortunately, I've never had the pleasure of a '90 Dom that has rocked me But I keep hoping. No official score, gut feeling 88-89pts.

  • 2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Drinking great, this has that riveting minerality on the nose; stones, tarragon, Meye lemon. The palate is round and deep, lemon, Meyer lemon, stones, gunflint and a little reductive note. This is so tangy and vibrant; the best of a string af many great bottles.

  • 2014 Aubert Chardonnay Larry Hyde & Sons 94 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour plus. Drank this next to a stellar '11 Lafon Meursault CdB and it was up to the task. Both wines were great frankly, with similarities and differences. The Aubert shows a ovely sea air nose with fresh cut melon, fennel, spiced pear, creme brulee, and a tangerine infused pastry cream. The palate is full bodied and light on its feet with excellent acidity, a mix of lemon-pear-melon fruit, wet stones minerality, modest integrating oak and a long finish. I loved both of these wines. 94+pts.

  • 2011 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 94 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over an hour plus. Loved this; high toned and funky, damp and dank earthy notes slowly emerge, there's almost some putrification notes (in a good way), dark cherry, fresh herbs, naugahyde. The palate really shows the fruit, cherry and currants, gravel, wood tones, lacquer, medium full body. Drinking well.

  • 1996 Bussia Soprana Barolo Mosconi 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Dark red color with 1 cm bricked edge. Splash decanted for sediment - very heavy sediment. The nose is showing better than the palate tonight. Dried earth, leather, muted cherry on the nose. The palate shows red fruits, wood spice, medium bodied with some alcohol showing and gradually resolving tannins. It did improve modestly of 90 minutes. 90-91pts.

  • 2020 Dr. Loosen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Ultra pale gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Green apple, bright, tingly acids, slate. Youthful and delicious.
