Introduction

This morning we shot out to Glenrowan to pop to Baileys then zipped back to Beechworth to Traviarti before having a disorganised/unplanned afternoon and supper out

Flight 1 - Baileys (14 Notes)

I'd only really been exposed to Baileys Shiraz, mostly the 1920's though not many times. Lovely cellar door, very old school wine-making, the fortified wines were impressive.

Flight 2 - Traviarti (3 Notes)

lovely to meet Simon, listen to his wine making philosophy and try his wines; especially the rather impressive Nebbiolo

  • 2022 Traviarti Chardonnay

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Slight stone fruit, melon, a little sweet spice, slight solids and lees work. Juicy savoury solids more prevalent on the palate, texture is positively chewy, medium over slight stone fruit, a little too savoury for me but, as it opens, more fruit shows. Time will help here.

  • 2022 Traviarti Nebbiolo Mezzo

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Red berry fruit shows a touch of floral up lift, a little cherry, clean, simple. Medium plus intensity acidity, plentiful, medium plus intensity drying savoury tannins, muted red cherry fruit sits beneath this. It's a little dilute, great tannins though.

  • 2021 Traviarti Nebbiolo

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Perfumed floral top notes, fresh cherry and plum, a little sweet spice, touch of pot pourri. Medium plus acidity, the fruit is more red than black hued on the palate and has a slight sour note all subsumed by persistent, grainy, ridiculously long tannins which are near perfect. Lovely.

Flight 3 - Lunch (2 Notes)

With zero breakfast the pizzas at Bridge Road Brewers proved more than pleasant. They were accompanied by a couple of glasses of local vino...

  • 2022 Haldon Estate Chardonnay

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Medium minus intensity aromas of tomato leaf, slight peach. Butter, tangy, textured grip is tight, leesy, woody, fruit sweet. Lacks acid.

  • 2018 Willem Kurt Shiraz

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Closed black berry fruit, meaty and peppery underpin. Juicy, savoury, fair amount of caramel oak, ripe black fruits, cream, tannins are talc textured slightly drying, rich. Slight alcohol warmth. Okay but feels a little odd after the other wines that we've tasted so far on our trip.

Flight 4 - Eldorado Road (7 Notes)

After the drive to Baileys, the excitement of Traviarti and lunch we were a bit demotivated to drive around so walked the solid 16 meters to the Eldorado Cellar Door right next door to the brewery

  • 2022 Eldorado Road Wallflower Viognier/Marsanne

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Apricot, bees wax, stone fruit, a little candy floss and floral note. Tart, textured burr, herby notes, fruit a touch muted on the palate, lightweight textured burr. Meh.

  • 2022 Eldorado Road Quasimodo

Dense plummy fruit, damsons, blackberry, sweet spice, rich. Juicy, savoury, black hued fruit is concentrated, tight chewy tannins are more grape than oak but with that slight stave sucking quality.

  • 2021 Eldorado Road Syrah

    Australia, Victoria, North East, Beechworth

Meaty, savoury, blackberry, plum, a little meaty peppery note; slight wood glue. Medium plus intensity acidity, that savoury peppery note, translates to the palate along with grainy tannic grip that persists long, fruit is slightly muted here for me. Touch of cream on the finish. Hmm.

Flight 5 - Pennyweight (10 Notes)

Because I know Phil likes fortified I dragged him to Pennyweight in the hope that he would enjoy the vintage port. He didn't (it wasn't very nice) but the Ruby was very good so it was worth the trip

Flight 6 - Supper and home (5 Notes)

Phil booked the Empire hotel (I think at Stef's recommendation) for our last supper and we were extremely impressed by how good the food was. When we finished we toddled back to our accommodation and I did my very best to drink everything left in the house.

Closing

Another lovely day of pottering around but a general sense of fatigue gripped as the afternoon unfolded...nana naps were grabbed before we headed out for supper...
