This is hands down the best champagne I’ve ever had. What a freshness, what a complexity! It has spent 20 (!!) years sur lie in the cellars. Nutty (walnut & almonds), flintiness, wet rock, toast, honey, yeast, nectarine, yellow apple, elderflower, ginger, popcorn, butter, smoke, caramel. Medium+ acidity, medium+ flavor intensity, very, very long finish that keeps evolving, from nutty to bread, to yellow fruit, to toast. This is what champagne is all about! 95-96
[Tasted blind] Called Alsace Vendanges Tardives, but thought it was 2005 and didn’t get Pinot Gris. Deep straw yellow, medium- flavor intensity on the nose with linoleum, honey, with some searching mango, figs and beewax. Medium sweet, medium+ acidity, medium- flavor intensity on the palate. Very thick oily mouthfeel. Honey and nuts in the long finish
France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières-Coulée de Serrant
[Tasted blind] Called 20 year Chenin from the Loire. Didn’t have the sherry notes you often find in old Coulee. This got better with more air, although I still had the feeling it is past its peak. Still drinking nicely though. Deep golden, nutty, beewax, linoleum, dried yellow apple, some savoury notes, tomato leaf. Medium+ acidity, medium finish with some gunpowder flavors making it more interesting
What a great wine, amazing how they’ve managed to make this beautiful Hermitage Blanc in what is considered to be a very difficult Northern Rhone year. Straw yellow, medium intensity on the nose with orange peel, lemon zest, honey, tangerine, toast, smoke, blossom, elegantly integrated oak. Medium+ acidity, medium+ flavor intensity comparable with the nose but on the palate also white chocolate. Very long finish. 93-94
[Edit] on day 3 there is a great floral note added with roses, white and yellow flower, almost Condrieu like!
Quite pale ruby wit medium- aroma’s of barnyard, earthy, tomato leaf, cranberry, cherry, licorice, Medium+ acidity, medium tannins, long fruity finish. Had expected a bit more from this famous Mencia. 2075 bottles produces. 91-91
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
[Tasted blind] Clearly Bordeaux (called right bank 2005) but also clearly over its peak. Cassis, leather, cherry bonbon, earthy, blackberry, iron. Little left on the palate. Medium acidity, medium tannins. Short finish
[Tasted blind] Called supertuscan. Blackberry, blackcurrant, ripe plum, bacon, ceder, tobacco, chocolate, clove. Medium acidity, nicely integrated medium+ tannins, high alcohol. Interesting to taste this high altitude wine (grown at 2000m). Very fresh, but unfortunately the 16% alcohol shows to much for me. 89-90
