Introduction

Felton Road dinner with Nigel Greening

Flight 1 - Aperitif (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Chardonnay (2 Notes)

  • 2012 Felton Road Chardonnay Bannockburn

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Bannockburn

Side by side with the Elms. Although different vintage.
    Oak influence here is clear.
More typical chardonnay with notes of apple.
Nose not as lively as the Elms but this wins on the palate and finish. I suppose the oak has given it slightly more bodied.
Amazing how still so fresh after 11 years.

  • 2011 Felton Road Chardonnay Elms

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Unoaked, according to Nigel Greening made exactly the same way as the Bannockburn only difference being the Elms is unoaked.
I was surprised by how fresh this was both on the nose and the palate.
    Saline finish with citrus.

Flight 3 - Riesling (2 Notes)

  • 2014 Felton Road Dry Riesling

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

First of the rieslings tasted this evening.
Unmistakable petrol aromas. I have never had such a pronounced petrol whiff.
Laser like palate and acidity. Very focused but the Bannockburn was the winner for me in this flight.

Beautiful golden hue from the age.
    Petrol and apricots.

    Wow.

Flight 4 - Pinot Noir (1 Note)

  • 2021 Felton Road Pinot Noir MacMuir

New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Central Otago

Abel clone grapes. According to Nigel Greening the source of Abel clone is from La Tache.
Medium bodied. Good fruit but I would leave at least another 5 years before broaching. Nose slightly closed but improved with air.

Flight 5 - Dinner wines (6 Notes)

Closing

Educational and eye opening experience.
I leave knowing how long lived the wines are and how much better they get with age.
Nigel mentioned screw cap closure being one the reasons why their wines stay so fresh.
