During a walkabout tasting, so only brief impressions. First time having this. A good addition to the portfolio Fresh, elegant with ripe fruit and earthy elements.

Felton Road Dinner (The Wine Society Stevenage): Abel clone grapes. According to Nigel Greening the source of Abel clone is from La Tache. Medium bodied. Good fruit but I would leave at least another 5 years before broaching. Nose slightly closed but improved with air.

Tasted at a wine dinner in NJ with the winemaker, Blair Walter. This is the first or second vintage of this cru. It is made from vines that are only 9 years old. 14.5% ABV with 20-30% whole cluster fermentation and 25% new French oak aging. This wine is rather exuberant and plush, more fruit forward than the Calvert and Bannockburn crus. Lower acidity as well but still adequate. More rich on the palate but also another notch lower in floral expression than the Calvert cru. Fruit is more dominated by black cherry and blackberry with some mineral and spice complexity. There was an element that I describe as un-refined cocoa bean on the nose that was interesting but there wasn’t an overarching baking spice element. Excellent but not yet showing the complexity of the others tonight.

Quite closed at the moment. Sharp red fruits on the nose. Unremarkable palate. I think this will need some more time to develop.
