Introduction

Paul brought back baseball sized truffles from Tartufi, Italy and generously shared. So dinner was on!

Flight 1 - BUBBLY (2 Notes)

With mixed-spiced nuts, cheese and bread.

Flight 2 - BURGUNDY (2 Notes)

With roasted chicken in a cream-mushroom-herb sauce ... very tasty.

Flight 3 - SPARKLER INTERMEZZO (1 Note)

Flight 4 - PIEDMONT (2 Notes)

The featured course --- Summer Truffle Risotto.

  • 1995 Elio Altare Langhe Barbera Larigi

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Gorgeous, perfumed and effusive nose. Loads of red and black fruits, tar and smoke. Palate is richly textured with fine balance. Well-integrated oak, suave tannins and fresh acidity. Pure, complex and lifted. Outstanding --- the best Barbera I've ever had.

  • 1996 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Loreto

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Nearly black in color with on-again, off-again aromatics of dark fruits, flowers and licorice. Despite a couple hours in the decanter this was brooding and tight. Good richness of fruit but just too tannic to be enjoyed today. Like the stuffing, but needs time.

Flight 5 - BORDEAUX / CAB (3 Notes)

With grilled ribeye steaks and asparagus.

  • 1983 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Effusive and complex aromatics. Initial funk blows off to reveal aged dark fruits, cedar, minerals, tar and spice accents. Still quite lively on the palate with round currant fruits, soft-suave tannins and plenty of balancing acidity. Drinking damn well - a fine example of perfectly mature bdx.

  • 1986 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Full, open and complex nose releases sromas of sweet currant fruit and cedar with pronounced tobacco leaf, green pepper and herbs. Very PLL-like. Palate is still richly concentrated, lively and well balanced. California -- but with a real tip-of-the cap to the old world. Delicious, long and showing plenty of complexity. Served blind in a Bordeaux flight - 1 guess for Cali but most leaning towards the old world.

  • 1998 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Full, open aromas of tarry dark fruits, minerals, leather and spice. Round lush fruits on the palate with buoyant acidity and fine tannins. On the younger side a good drinking window - tasty, fresh and complex.
