Juicy, ripe, and showing the vintage very clearly. Bigger in stature, with lots of plushness. Good chew nonetheless, but more time is clearly warranted. Lacking the steely intensity of a Dom rosé.
#20-20, 13% abv. Heady, intense, and chewy riesling. A little Mosel-like quality to the tart fruit with more lifted minerally apple notes, lime leaf, and grapefruit peel. Plenty of acidity and cut here, but lots of weight as well. Really compelling as a fresh, young wine.
Mature, old Bordeaux. A little dirtiness that might be evocative of TCA but it's definitely just the taste of old wine. Starting to fade, but plenty drinkable still.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
More interesting on the nose than the palate; this has some dense, concentrated pinot character, but the oak seems to be a little bit prominent, but it's fully resolved at this point. Much better than the oaky reputation would have had me think.
Wow. Absolutely stunning, mature Krug. Rich and thick, with tons of intensity. Hard to tell if the vintage or the age has contributed to the intensity, but wow, this is just a stellar bottle of old GC.
Fatter and rounded; a slight bit of sweetness on the palate alongside plenty of richer qualities. Lacks the lean cut of white label Trimbach, but I do like the bits of sweetness here.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Creamy, ripe, and quite prototypical Ramonet. I like the palate breadth here, and there is a demure calmness about this that I really enjoy. Less screechy and intense than the PYCM.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Somehow simultaneously fatter and higher acid than the Ramonet. Comes across as one of those wines where everything is pulled really far in all directions.
Wow. Leagues better than other fresh CSH that I've had. I love the mineral brightness and the intensity here. Delicate and light, with lots of good freshness. I love the laser focus of this.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Minty. Very fresh and intense, this has the oily old school white Burgundy texture and style. Really the kind of old chardonnay that I really like. Delicious.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Far better than I expected for both Drouhin and the vintage. Clean and bright with good fruit; not flabby but with good overall cut. To be sure, the fruit is showing some age and there are some slight browning notes here. But this is showing splendidly all the same.
Sweet, rich, and very rounded on the palate. Good chalkiness with a modest dose of minerality. Chewy, broad, and incredible texture. Showing a little bit of age at this point and the freshness is starting to dissipate.
LC20. Leaner style with an almost stemmy note. Definitely not my style of champagne -- taut and high tension but lacking breadth on the palate. I definitely used to like these more.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
More interesting than good for me. Somehow not really doing it for me, despite I love the fresh brightness. Seems a little subdued though all the right things are there, this certainly doesn't feel like the Leflaive of old.
Not quite my cup of tea. The oak is generous and prominent here, and there's a bit too much sweet fruit here. Needs time; I think there's going to be potential later on.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Good, not great iteration of this wine. Lots of bright red fruit, very 2008 in style but with a little more weight on the palate. Pleasant now, despite being quite tannic.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Not as overwrought as some other PYCM can be; this was a little lighter and there was some really nice acidity to balance things. Very drinkable and approachable.
#42-22, 12% abv. Electric and scintillating. Pretty much concentrated essence of riesling. Minerally, high acid, and chewy on the palate. Likely more convincing young, as it doesn't feel like this has the breadth to sustain extended aging. But so fun to drink now.
