  • 2020 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos St. Landry Blanc 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    monopole vineyard.

light yellow with light viscosity in the glass. apricot, citrus and subtle hazelnut notes on the nose. dry and fresh in the mouth, its flavours flow with moderate intensity; there is good harmony and tension between the fruit, acidity and minerality, and it finishes fresh. remarkably open already, it hints of further development.

a very appealing bottle for those who prefer a lighter style of Chardonnay that still retains complexities.

  • 2020 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

yellow in the glass with appreciable viscosity. the nose is generous with white fruit, brioche, hints of pineapple and white flowers. in the mouth it has a slightly viscous density that gives it a relatively full feel that is somewhat austere initially; the flavours emerge displaying riper notes of peach and red apple partly buoyed by an acid vein, and partly dulled by woody dryness that carries thru the finish.

it hints very much at the rich profile of a Meursault, but it will need a bit of time to get there; could not get a good read on the balance at the moment.

  • 2020 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    monopole vineyard.

solid ruby in the glass with light to medium body. earthy sous-bois gives way to blue and red fruit in the nose, with some floral and spicy accents coming in with time. it uncoils slowly in the mouth, with the earthy notes leading the bitter cherry fruit as this gains in intensity, accented by floral, herbal, and spicy touches and into a slightly saline finish. there is good acidity and tannic structure for this wine to round out more, even if it seems fairly approachable now due to its balance and smooth texture.

this vineyard is a cool site, and the warm year notwithstanding, the wine reflects that very well.

  • 2020 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

purplish ruby with a dark core in the glass and medium body. dark berries and plum dominate the nose, accented by spicy notes and just whiffs of rose and earth. in the mouth it has medium body that feels fuller from the fleshiness of the fruit: ripe red and dark berry flavours flow bright with acidity; herbal and spicy notes and bitterness in the tannins provide a counterweight. the finish is long, fruity, and fresh.

the wine has a concentration and intensity i don't associate with Volnays, so it's probably best not think of it as one… that said, there is a lot that needs integration with a few years in bottle for that to happen. there is upside potential here.

  • 2020 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

while not labelled as a monopole, this storied vineyard is an exclusive for Bouchard, and one the Domaine counts as one of its crown jewels.

dark ruby with medium body and with a small of whiff of alcohol in the glass. i took my time with this one and was rewarded by floral notes of rose and lavender and whiffs of blood orange peel and star anise enriching the red berries and dark fruit coming off the glass. it is medium bodied in the mouth and has a delightful gentle density with layers of bright and dark fruit suffused with a palpable minerality and accented by herbal and spicy notes. there is remarkable freshness and a firm but polished tannic backbone. long finish.

the balance in the wine gives it an early elegance that will most likely increase. and while the wine seems to be fairly approachable now, a handful of years of bottle age should help it shine.

  • 2020 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

got a very stingy pour so had to make it count… couldn't get a good read on the body, and the colour seemed to be pleasantly solid ruby. not a lot to swirl to coax many aromas, so took my time…

red and black fruits were prominent in the nose, as was sous-bois; accents i picked up included sandalwood, sage, rose petals, pomegranate, and clove-like spices. it feels round and full yet soft-textured in the mouth; the ample fruit core has fine tannic support and the acidity and minerality seem to lift the wine thru the long finish.

the wine is this stage remarkably open for a Grand Cru and already tips some of complexities in store. naturally, time will be its friend… i'd say at least six more years. there's upside potential to the rating here.

Corton generally produces some of the bigger wines of the Beaune, and this seems to be the case this year as well. that said, this isn't particularly bigger or riper than other years' wines, in spite of the hot vintage.
