Introduction

Does Terroir show in wine? All wines served blind but the Terroir blurb was supplied from the producers. The short answer was 'no' with the exception of the Riesling.

Flight 1 - On Entry (2 Notes)

Couple of rather indifferent Roses to kick off with

Flight 2 - Chardonnay (3 Notes)

Nice bracket...but wine makers hand was more evident...The Macon was obviously Macon not because of the fruit or acid but because the lack of time on solids to get those reductive notes...

  • 2021 Giant Steps Chardonnay Applejack Vineyard

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

    "Served blind.
medium minus intensity aromas, a little meaty, peachy, slight struck match. Juicy, tangy, stone fruit, a little drying, slightly coarse textured, fruit core has sweetness.
    I guessed Australian, Victorian"

  • 2021 La Soufrandière Mâcon-Vinzelles Clos de Grand Père

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Vinzelles

    "Served blind.
Peach, slightly ripe, savoury but with floral top notes, stone fruit, a little cream, slight sulphur prickle, butter. Tangy, apples, stone fruit, plenty of drying texture, touch of alcohol warmth on the finish not intrusive. Feels a little flabby compared to the other wines in the bracket.
    I guessed French, Macon

  • 2021 Corofin Chardonnay Wrekin Vineyard

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

    "Served blind.
Medium minus aromas of slightly reductive struck match notes, a little meaty wild ferment element, citrus. Medium plus intensity acidity, tangy, citrus over fresh stone fruit, oddly slight alcohol warmth, silky textured burr. Nice though.
New Zealand but not sure of where..."

Flight 3 - Riesling (3 Notes)

Pity about the Flawed wine

Flight 4 - Pinot Noir (4 Notes)

So many face plants for me here

  • 2019 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir

New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough

    "Served blind.
Slightly slaty, black hued fruits, berry over cherry, a little sweet oak spice, jubey, blackberry fruit, generous nose. Juicy, generous, dense, more black cherry and berry on the palate, rich, concentrated, polished oak.
    USA, Oregon?"

  • 2021 William Downie Pinot Noir Baw Baw Shire Camp Hill

    Australia, Victoria, Gippsland

    "Served blind.
A little funky wild ferment, vegetal over red berry fruit, a little dilute note, slight Brett (?). Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury, tangy grippy tannins close down the palate, red hued fruits, a little non-intrusive alcohol warmth on the finish.
    French, entry level"

  • 2020 Guilhem et Jean-Hugues Goisot Irancy Les Mazelots

    France, Burgundy, Côtes d'Auxerre, Irancy

    "Served blind.
Oof, massive ashy whole bunch and unripeness; herbaceous, touch of sweaty armpit, asparagus, exceedingly green. Ashy and unripe on the palate, bitter, hard, unpleasant. Nah
Australian, Tasmanian, failed whole bunch attempt in a wet year. "

  • 2021 Crystallum Pinot Noir Cuvée Cinema

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay

    "Served blind.
Slightly plummy, sweet spice, a little earthy almost mushroom note. Juicy, fleshy, tangy, plentiful tannins with dark hued fruits, slightly bitter on the finish with slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth but otherwise this is fresh, nice.
I knew this was South African (by a process of elimination) and figured that it would be from Hemel en Aarde."

Closing

Fun tasting until the Pinot's rolled around and I was all over the place! Some nice wines though...
