Introduction

What a terrific afternoon. Lovely wines and great company on Villa Puycousin. Thanks to Don for incredible patience in pulling this together and my table mates for their cracking contributions.

Flight 1 - Gougère (1 Note)

  • 2012 Alfred Gratien Champagne Brut Millésimé 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Toasted nuts, some lemon pith and hints of marzipan. Palate has all of the above with some subtle flecks of ginger. Later there is a real bread and butter pudding quality with dried fruits, some creaminess and some sourdough notes. One of my Champagnes of the year so far. Excellent and so glad added to the running order.

Flight 2 - Roast scallop, razor clams, brown shrimp (3 Notes)

  • 2010 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

One of a glorious trio of Chablis on Villa Puycousin. Lime posset and mountain stream minerality from the get-go. Later some candied fruit a la tutti fruiti. With some air both a hint of green pineapple stalk and a couple of drops of the juice too. Palate has incredible line and a lime juice kiss a full 15 seconds after swallowing. My wine of the flight.

  • 2005 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Some tart / sweet blood orange marmalade on the nose to start, a little riper than the other two in the flight. Palate has a little oyster shell and some grassiness. Think the other two a whisker ahead on the day.

  • 2006 Dauvissat-Camus Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

On pouring a straw and lemon barley water character, with some air a hint of Goji berry as well. Palate is tart and bracing. Good but a little in the shadow of the Brocard.

Flight 3 - Rabit boudin blanc, pancetta, prune and mustard (3 Notes)

  • 2013 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Clos du Roy 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

Again quite dark fruited with some dissolved SO2 to shake out. When it gets going there are some red fruits and after an hour or so some hints of brown toast. Palate has some redcurrant sorbet and is well balanced. Not quite the depth of its flight mates but a very pleasant drop.

  • 2013 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Marsannay Les Longeroies 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

Cool cark fruits on the nose and a slug of dissolved SO2. After pouring between glasses for a while this develops some real depth. There are touches of Oolong tea, some goji berries and layers of dark fruits. Palate is rich with a lovely peppery acidity. My wine of the flight.

  • 1978 M. Doudet-Naudin Pommard 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard

A backup for an iffy Thévenin of the same commune and vintage. This has some freshly sliced mushroom and beef pho broth on the nose. Some crumled fudge too and after an hour or so a few hints of hoisin. Palate is compact but perfectly correct, fully tertiary with some forest floor interest. A treat.

Flight 4 - Venison, celeriac, chestnut and quince (2 Notes)

  • 2003 Domaine Drouhin-Laroze Bonnes Mares 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Intriguing. This is a big wine with hints of Stollen from first sniff. There is a spot of Quink ink too. Goes well with the venison. Palate is powerful, with some spiciness as well as ripe dark fruits and a twist of pepper. Acidity just right too. Overall a lot to like.

  • 2017 Domaine Stephane Magnien Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Cuvée Aux Petites Noix 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru

The youngest of our wines. On pouring there is a smoky gaminess to this with layers of red fruits, some spice and a little white pepper. Palate shows the wine's youth with tannins needing a little more time. After an hour there is a venison carpaccio character to this with a hint of cherry Tunes. First of 6 look forward to the other 5 over time.

Closing

Food was outstanding today and complemented the wines so well.

Chapeau team Trompette.
