Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2005 Bodega Classica Rioja Hacienda López de Haro Gran Reserva

    Spain, La Rioja, Rioja

    (11/4/2023)

Day 2. The fruit is still there, maybe a bit broader shouldered - the tannins are somehow more evident, and the vanilla ice cream American Oak component is bigger - it’s not *big*, certainly not for a Rioja, but somehow bigger than yesterday. It’s possible that this is some combination of my senses not being dulled by getting off a long flight, and / or not pairing it with magnificent Devon Wagyu burgers, but there really is a vanilla character I didn’t get yesterday.

Either way - this is still proper kit.

  • NV A. Margaine Champagne Premier Cru Le Brut

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    (11/4/2023)

Served from half. Cork noticeably more compressed than previous bottles from the same case. Pale colour - not quite straw. Really engaging nose - honeycrisp apple, slight oxidative note, hint of incense. The palate doesn’t quite maintain the level of interest but great fruit, lovely sherbet and chalk on the mid palate.

  • 2022 Bodegas Hidalgo Manzanilla La Gitana En Rama

Spain, Andalucía, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda

    (11/5/2023)

Lovely nutty nose, the palate had great acid and that oxidative character, but somehow a little more diffuse than I remember? Still vg value.
