Another fine ferret. Nose - reductive, but also there's a richness there. A real breadth to it - there's a Meursault - like richness, but also a kind of line behind it. K would love this.

Similarly reductive nose but less richness around it. Some line and zip here - improves with air, jolly nice stuff.

Bargain auction magnum - will it be ok or won't it? Opened on arrival to the restaurant, the cork is...good! The wine is...not. Oxidized and / or cooked - foul foul foul. Oh well.

Garnet colour, a hint of bricking. Somewhat floral nose - parma violets. Savoury with a nice acid backbone. Good stuff.

Brought as a backup to the disastrous 86. Lovely stuff - black fruits on the nose, tight, more red fruits on the palate. This is only just getting into the zone - the 97 is giving more pleasure at this stage, but I think this will continue to develop and will ultimately peak higher. Proper Cote de Beaune red.

"Flight of the night" as the owner of the restaurant called it. There's a line here - somewhere between the ethereal and the structured, a really nice nose and a palate that is lovely but not quite keeping the promise the nose makes.

The nose is really like the 97 Ursules. On the palate - a certain sweetness (some discussion at the table as to whether there was also a kind of quinine note to it too - I think there was but this may be the power of autosuggestion...) and a certain kind of almost dilute mouthfeel. Someone said this was a grown up wine, and they were right. This note doesn't make it sound as good as it was...

A gorgeous nose to this. A lot going on - is it primary or tertiary? There's GC substance to it but it doesn't mess about and doesn't really care what you think - it would probably leave crumbs on the sofa but it will also make you breakfast so...all in all a good time.

Some discussion as to whether it was faulty. Definitely some VA there - it *did* improve in the glass, but not to the point where it should have been. Had I ordered this in a restaurant I would have sent it back.

A generous backup bottle. All the things - lovely balance between the tannins, the fruit. Lovely earthy nose and some black fruits at the back. This was great - maybe my wotn.

NV Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Cuvée de Réserve

Served from magnum, evidently 08 base. Nose was fantastic, real zip and energy here. On the palate - chalkiness, a slight bitterness at the back of the palate that recedes over time. I've been really enjoying the lightness and elegance of 12 and 13 champagnes recently - this had a real substance to it that I associate with 08...lovely stuff, improved in the glass, and a cracking start to proceedings.
