Flight 1 - Gougères (1 Note)

  • NV Pierre Péters Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Cuvée de Réserve

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Served from magnum, evidently 08 base. Nose was fantastic, real zip and energy here. On the palate - chalkiness, a slight bitterness at the back of the palate that recedes over time. I've been really enjoying the lightness and elegance of 12 and 13 champagnes recently - this had a real substance to it that I associate with 08...lovely stuff, improved in the glass, and a cracking start to proceedings.

Flight 2 - Crab Cake, Bitter Leaves and Orange Salad, Brown Crab Sauce (2 Notes)

Flight 3 - Wild Mushroom Fettuccini, Cep Foam (3 Notes)

Flight 4 - Venison Wellington (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

"Flight of the night" as the owner of the restaurant called it. There's a line here - somewhere between the ethereal and the structured, a really nice nose and a palate that is lovely but not quite keeping the promise the nose makes.

  • 1997 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

The nose is really like the 97 Ursules. On the palate - a certain sweetness (some discussion at the table as to whether there was also a kind of quinine note to it too - I think there was but this may be the power of autosuggestion...) and a certain kind of almost dilute mouthfeel. Someone said this was a grown up wine, and they were right. This note doesn't make it sound as good as it was...
