A trio of Friday Syrahs

Introduction

Fun evening with Devon Wagyu burgers, home processed cheese and Syrah. All the wines shone but there was a clear ranking - the Peroline, the Cornas and then the SA wine.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2021 Minimalist Wines Syrah No Place Like Home

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

In my mind there's two types of SA Syrah - the slightly fleshy, oaky, boozy type that are well put together but don't really thrill, and the edgy, fun, engaging kind that make you stop and go - yeah. This is 75% the latter and 25% the former - NEARLY exciting, NEARLY gripping but...doesn't quite get over the hump.

  • 2014 Mickaël Bourg Cornas Les P'tits Bouts

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Well 14 N Rhone doesn't have a great reputation but, having bought 3 bottles thought I'd give this a try. Clearly more dilute than other vintages, and maybe not as focused - this is still a fun, engaging wine. Should you rush out and buy some? Probably not - but equally, if you have some - an enjoyable drink - not quite thrilling but...thrilling adjacent.

  • 2011 Bernard Levet Côte-Rôtie La Chavaroche / La Péroline

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Oooh - a little funk, a little edge, spent the evening torn between deciding whether i really quite like this, or I REALLY quite like this. On pouring - a little earthiness, but none of the brett for which Levet is sometimes renowned. It opens up and gets bloodier and earthier as time goes on - there's a real energy to this, a real character. This isn't the time of the evening to be opening up another bottle of the same wine...but if it were, I would.
