Introduction

This was the regular guys night gathering. We had a gourp of six for some outstanding wines (jg/kg,jp,ds,sp,kb). Joe and Khem did the cooking and everything turned out great. Wonderful night!! Thanks to Joe and Khem for hosting and everyone for their wines.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • 2002 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Light-medium salmon color. Drank a glass over an hour. Strawberry, brioche, melon and subtle mineral notes on the nose. The palate shows a complex mix of fruits, with strawberry, orange, cherry, pear, subtle sea shells, dry stone, and a foamy mousse. It's been years since I had the last bottle of '02, in fact almost 9 years. My impression is not that different from back then when I was underwhelmed with what I expected this to be. I was hopeful that some time would make this more compelling, but that was not the case tonight. Very good, yes; on another level, not for me again. The '09 we tasted a couple weeks ago, was magical, so I'm a bit surprised the '02 just has not made the same impression. One more to go. 92+ to 93pts.

  • 1984 Dominus Estate 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very dark red color, 4mm transition. Splash double decanted; drank a glass plus over 3 hours. This was firing on all cylinders for me tonight. It drinks youthfully in comparison to its 40 year age in fact. But this is in a sweet spot for my taste. Really perfumed on the nose, with leather and menthol in the forefront, mint, deep dark fruit of cassis and black cherry. There's still a juiciness to the palate's red and black fruits, very earthy, velveteen texture, dried wood, menthol, leather, lovely tannins, and very good length. One of my all time favorite Dominus vintages. This checks all the boxes for me, and in a flight of really outstanding, and comparable wines qualitatively, it was probably my favorite tonight.

  • 1986 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 3 hour next to the '84 Dominus. I had never had Eisele from Phelps, so it was really great to try this. This has a more classic Napa profile than the Dominus, with riper fruits that are slightly candied. Blackberry, leather, earth, deep cherry, horse saddle on the nose. The palate is darker fruits, blackberry pie, blackberry liqueur, some blue fruit underpinning, dense and sultry, with a sweet essence, raspberry chocolate, nice pepper and spice on the back end and very long. Loved this in it's riper style. I got some onion skin after a couple hours as it seemed to change a bit.

  • 1986 Château Rausan-Ségla 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Very dark red/purple color with a 2mm clear edge. Splash decanted, drank a glass over 3 hours in a flight with '00 Pichon Baron and '03 Pichon Lalande. Wow, it's been four and a half years since the last bottle. I think this might even be drinking younger than back then. I don't think that's a bad thing, this has really got some legs for aging. Beautiful as it is, this could get better. Earthy, youthful for its age, cassis, black raspberry, blue fruits, violets, finely perfumed. The palate has pretty fruits and a transparency to it, cassis, boysenberry, raspberry later, super velvety, full bodied and captivating. Loved it.

  • 2000 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Very dark red/purple color, saturated. Decanted for 1.5 hours, drank a glass over 3 hours in a flight with '86 Rausan Segla and '03 Pichon Lalande. This started out slowly for me, the fruit was there, but I was getting some volatility to start that was a bit distracting. With some more glass time though, this starting to strut and show that impressive core of fruit and all the aromatics burst forth. Big, dense and layered, really aromatic, gorgeous cassis notes, black cherry, woodsy, purple flowers. The palate is full bodied, concentrated with layers of creme de cassis, cassis, raspberry and blackberry fruit, woodsy, sublte pencil, very impressive. This became really even and blissful after an hour. This is wonderful with a several hours of air now, but it's going to be better in a few more years as it adds complexity. 96(+)pts.
