Introduction

Well - this was an amazing evening. Huge thanks to Michel for putting this together. The food was outstanding. It was great to see all the people and meet all of you guys and finally place a face onto the screen-name.

Flight 1

we started with a nice sparkler that i unfortunatly (can you believe it? ) forgot to take the label off of :) Michael what was it?
it had a cava-like profile of light green apples but with a more yeasty overtone. great apertif!

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

Appetizers of Salad with shredded duck confit, figs stuffed with gorgonzola and wraped in speck, sauteed tripe with prosciutto

  • 1982 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Still young - but this is the only bottle that was mature barolo! pure truffle nose with forest floor... this is as smooth of a nose as one would ask from a burgundy. the palatte follwes - completly resolved tannins...silky smooth...sour cherry (i had more sour cherry tonight that ever in my life - ALL the wines had a sour cherry as the dominant fruit and i LOVE sour cherry!)

this is what i hope to see from barolo - and after this tasting i understand that ANYTHING younger than 20 years is just not ready - they may be delicious but this was PURE silky and light - a song of a wine

  • 1993 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Drier than the Renato, less mushrooms more power. this is still too young and rather tight. i think this will be a good wine in a few years - it has great balance. but it didnt seem to have the depth of some of the others.

  • 1990 Soldera (Az. Agr. Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 95 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

this was showing poorly when opened. completly closed. but after a few hours this really began to open. Sangiovese can be this smooth? ridiculous depth on the nose. Very light body. the only non dry chyrry profile tonight. more red berries and - i could not believe myself - PINE needles.. YUM!!! give it 10 years!

  • 1996 Cascina Ballarin Barolo Bricco Rocca 92 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

TOOOOO young. when poured still had a touch of alcohol on the nose. but that dissapated with time. Others at the table liked this a lot - to me it had a very elegant profile and nose but it seemed to lack the power and depth of fruit of the Giacossa. Delicious elegant wine - maybe even best as something to sip and ponder..

  • 1995 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Falletto di Serralunga d'Alba 94 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Well...i couldnt wait to try my first Giacosa. And it was all that.... This is a much more masculine wine then the preceding ones. Power up front. lots of tannins but they barly distract the taster from the AMAZING fruit and loooong finish. What a wine... i cant even imagine how good this will be in another few decades!

  • 1996 Azienda Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) Barolo Bricco Rocche 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

More developed nose. lots of earthy and mushroomy flavors. more "classical" profile of dry cherry. with time i think this would gain complexity and the tannins would resolve to make it silkier.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 1997 La Biancara di Angiolino Maule Recioto di Gambellara Classico 91 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Recioto di Gambellara

this is recioto from white grapes. dark "amber" color - simmilar to vin santo (i am guessing the process is not dissimilar). honey, caramel. Less acidity than i prefer in sweet wines but its not meant to be that way - this is delicious and unique wine. Perfect for biscotti dunking or a simmilar dry desert. Italy is not too heavy on deserts - i think this suits classical italian understanding of what desert is. Biscotti, fruit and this wine.

  • 1997 Romano Dal Forno Nettare 93 Points

    Italy, Veneto, Veneto IGT

this came from a very generous Chris. he was having dinner near us and dropped thios off... AMAZING... and as far as the wine - this is thick, almoust like a tokaj without the orange notes. Rich with tropical fruit.

  • 1997 Romano Dal Forno Recioto della Valpolicella 97 Points

Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Recioto della Valpolicella

UNBELIEVABLE!..no words... richness of the fruit is truly ridiculous... no more..where does one go from here? i think its 97 only because i think it can improve with age - its still too punchy - if that power gains grace it will be a perfect wine. (this is the highest rating i think i have ever given..)
