Introduction

We blinded five wines on New Years Eve. Jeff's favorite was the Don Melchor. The Flaccianello was a HUGE disappointment -- hopefully it was flawed.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2005 Quinta do Crasto Douro Reserva Old Vines 88 Points

    Portugal, Douro

Tobacco, blackberry jam on the nose. Balanced wine with medium tannins. Not sure how it's a WS 95, but we definitely liked it. It was tasted again a couple hours later and it seemed a little too fruity and sweet, and was still pretty tannic.

  • 2004 Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT Flawed

Italy, Tuscany, Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT

Very disappointed with this wine. We think/hope it was a bad bottle. OVERWHELMING medicinal aroma, almost like acne medicine teenagers use. There were other smells that others got as well such as raw peanuts (the kind you feed birds), wet forest floor, wood. We didn't get any fruit at all out of it. We decanted it for several hours, and nothing changed. Hopefully the remaining bottles are better!

  • 2005 Concha y Toro Cabernet Sauvignon Don Melchor 92 Points

    Chile, Maipo Valley, Puente Alto

Dark, complex wine with bell pepper, coffee, earthy components. Great wine.

  • 2003 Outpost Zinfandel Howell Mountain 89 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

We blinded this wine and initially Jeff thought it was a Turley. The nose had cedar, vanilla and blueberry -- at one point we thought it was a Petit Syrah. The 16.2% alcohol was very evident. There were flavors of black pepper, vanilla, loads of fruit, but it was too sweet for our palates, even with all the complexity. We love zins, but this style was a little too much for us. A well-made wine. Difficult to score. (89-91 pt range...)

  • 1996 Livingston Moffett Cabernet Sauvignon Moffet Vineyard 89 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Cherry fruits, minimal tannins but still had some acidity. It had a little bit of lead-pencil flavor, and Jeff thought it was a Bordeaux (we tasted it blind). Had typical bell pepper aromas. Drink now if you have any -- nearing the end. Enjoyable, but not as complex as Ann remembers.
