Introduction

Fine Wine Experience Tasting with Edouard Moueix. In his introductory remarks Monsieur Moueix stated that Magdelaine was the first property purchased by the family back in 1952. The vineyard was next to Belair but a section did not benefit from the sun in the afternoon. He advised that Magdelaine is a wine that generally doesn't show well in the first 10 years of its life.

All wines came direct from the Mouiex cellar with the exception of the 1945 which was purchased at Zachy's (from Graham Lyon's cellar)

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Medium ruby core, medium pale ruby/garnet rim. Aromatic, open nose - with creamy, pure red fruit and floral perfume to the fore. All creamy red fruit and elegance on the palate too, lovely fresh acidity, good if not exceptional depth and length on the finish. Really very good.

  • 2005 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Medium/deep ruby. Slightly more closed on the nose than the 06, but with brooding, more intense and darker fruit underneath. Slightly more oak in evidence. Deeper, denser and darker fruited on the palate too, more density and body than the 06 if not in such a good place right now. Certainly more tannic on the finish too - a bigger wine all round, needing some time.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Relatively developed appearance with a medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Slightly dried red fruit on the nose, a little spice but somehwat reticent. A little tight on the palate too, with a tannin dominated finish - possibly closed. Coming back to it again at the end of the tasting it has definitely opened out and is showing more open, plummy fruit and notes of vanilla. Difficult to judge on this shjowing.

  • 2000 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Medium/deep garnet core. Ripe, plummy fruit on the nose - more open and approachable than the 01. Evident vanilla oak. Ripe and plummy on the palate too, still quite youthful, intense and mouth-filling with some firm tannin evident on the good length finish. Lots of potential here.

  • 1998 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Deep ruby garnet core, narrow garnet rim. Lovely, still quite youthful red fruited nose - strawberry fruit, with floral notes. Still a little closed. Lovely sweet, pure red fruit on the attack, a harmonious, effortless, elegant wine with fresh acidity and a lovely, lingering balanced finish. Lovely!

Noticeably more developed appearnce - nedium garnet even mahogany, broad rim. Medium intense, sweet developed fruit nose, with spicy dried red fruit and a hint of fruit-cakey development. Relatively burly on the palate, quite short and tannic on the finish. Not a great showing.

  • 1975 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Very sweet caramelly nose. Complex with red fruit and a slight (attractive) bitter, tannic, note. Open, mature and apporachable, perfumed with sweet caramelly fruit but also that welcome slight bitter edge. Lovely sweet fruit, fresh acidity, lingering harmonious finish. Really like this.

Flight 6 (3 Notes)

  • 1961 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

From half bottle. Pale/medium garnet core. Very, very sweet and ripe on the nose. Perfumed, aromatic. Slightly caramelly but there's red fruit here too and some floral notes. Lovely in the mouth, complex, with mellow red fruit, some date and fig notes, very long and harmonious on the finish. Still quite fleshy, and full of life. Outstanding.

  • 1959 Château Magdelaine

France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru

Pale garnet/mahogany. Not very giving on the nose initially, opening out to show sweet fruit and some slightly herbal, earthy notes. Still quite lively on the palate with sweet, caramelly fruit. Perhaps not quite as complex or long as the 61 but still a very nice drink!
