Fine Wine Experience Tasting with Edouard Moueix. In his introductory remarks Monsieur Moueix stated that Magdelaine was the first property purchased by the family back in 1952. The vineyard was next to Belair but a section did not benefit from the sun in the afternoon. He advised that Magdelaine is a wine that generally doesn't show well in the first 10 years of its life.
All wines came direct from the Mouiex cellar with the exception of the 1945 which was purchased at Zachy's (from Graham Lyon's cellar)
2006 Château Magdelaine
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Medium ruby core, medium pale ruby/garnet rim. Aromatic, open nose - with creamy, pure red fruit and floral perfume to the fore. All creamy red fruit and elegance on the palate too, lovely fresh acidity, good if not exceptional depth and length on the finish. Really very good.

2005 Château Magdelaine
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Medium/deep ruby. Slightly more closed on the nose than the 06, but with brooding, more intense and darker fruit underneath. Slightly more oak in evidence. Deeper, denser and darker fruited on the palate too, more density and body than the 06 if not in such a good place right now. Certainly more tannic on the finish too - a bigger wine all round, needing some time.
