Introduction

This event was designed as a clearance event for some bottles they had picked up when another store closed down. It was a real treat to get to taste all these different vineyards side by side, and the food supplied by the store was excellent. Italian wines are still a mystery for me for the most part, so this was a great educational experience with lots of "firsts". Now that I've got a single point of view on some of these vineyards, I look forward to comparing the experience with other wines I try down the road.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2007 Riff Pinot Grigio 88 Points

    Italy, Delle Venezie

Lemons, limes and pears on the nose. The wine is light and clean with nice citrus on the sides of the palate. There's a nice hint of green apple on the front as well with some decent acidity. I do like more acidity out of a grigio though, and the finish is a bit short.

  • 2004 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Rich cherries and earth all over the nose here. Fruit bomb incoming? The fruit is rich and bright on the palate, but not overwhelming. There are plum, blackberry and raspberry flavors that show up right away. Some nice tannins build and linger through the finish, where a tiny amount of bitterness shows up. There is some enjoyable minerality that appears on the side of the palate as well, and I find this pretty interesting. Good stuff.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Strawberries and a hint of tar and leather on the nose of this wine. I like it. On the palate, it's got a nice light approach which explodes into fruit. Raspberry, watermelon, and great tannins fill the mouth and dry out towards the end. The flavors are straight forward when they show up, and the finish is short, but the wine is totally enjoyable. 90-

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montefico 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Very light nose here with some blackberry scents along with a bit of heat and a hint of tannic structure. The beginning on the palate is just lovely with some great cranberry flavors and nice minerality. The flavors fade pretty quickly into some acidity and lighter tannins with the fruit fading far into the background at the end.

Nose contains blackberry scents, some salt, and leather. The wine is light, and clean with straightforward cranberry flavors running through to some very light tannins at the end.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

I get some very dark cherry scents on the nose as well as some violets and grilled steak scents. The wine is super clean right out of the gate and delivers an excellent bloom of cranberry and blackberry as it gets rolling. A hint of minerality lingers through to the finish and is coupled with a nice, full, tannic evolution. The cranberry flavors hang on well into the finish also. Solid and fun wine. Amazing to think that it's got so many years of potential aging as well.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pora 88 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Light cherry scents on the nose along with a hint of perfume. The acid on this wine hits the palate right out of the gate, and cranberry flavors are close behind. The cranberry flavors become very powerful, and the acid runs through and through. The sensations kind of remind me of the Ocean Spray cranberry juice. Straightforward.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Pajè 86 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Strawberries and cranberries on the nose along with a hint of coffee. There are some lovely bright cherry flavors right away, but the wine becomes disjointed toward the finish and some huge tannins come rolling in and stomp all over my palate. Too much for me.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Asili 87 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Deep brooding nose on this wine showing some tanninc structure wrapped up with strawberries and apples. The apple flavors come in early, and the fruit transitions more toward cranberries later with tons of acid on the mid palate. The tannins go crazy at the end. They're a bit disjointed, and with the acidity, they totally squash out the fruit. As an interesting note, the fruit survives longer than the acidity and tannins, but the experience isn't saved.

  • 2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Moccagatta 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

This wine delivers a lighter nose with distinct rose petal scents along with strawberry and blackberry fruit. Cherries and raspberries deliver on the palate, and there's an interesting flavor on the finish that reminds me of some nicely cooked shrimp. I know that's strange, but it's what I'm getting. The tannins take a bit to rise up and dry out the palate, and there is some solid acidity here as well.

  • 2004 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

Blackberry and BBQ all over the nose here. The wine delivers some super dark blackberry flavors immediately, with some cranberry appearing on the mid palate. The wine is lovely up front, with some very nice tannins that show up in the middle and stay strong through the finish. Some cherry flavors peek through very late as well. Some time to settle the tannins down a bit will make this solid wine even better.

  • 2004 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin 90 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco

On the nose there is a hint of cherries and strawberries as well as some campfire ash scents going on. The fruits deliver on the palate along with a hint of guava and some nice acid. The tannins evolve smoothly throughout the experience.

Closing

Good stuff overall, and surprisingly, a lot of the flavor profiles I had associated in my head with Barbaresco didn't show up much. That's education!
