07 KBs in The OC

Introduction

Great to have a chance to taste these especially prior to the SVs going on sale. Big thanks to Michael and Shane for coming down and sharing their enthusiasm for the wines. It is very clear they are achieving their goal with these 07s. It seems like the 07s hit the place of big clean ripe fruit while not getting heavy or sloppy on the palate. This is not my preferred style on most nights but when I want it, this is what I am looking for. The main thing is that the mid palate does not get too round and for the most part the finish went on long with nice acid.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2008 Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

I hear this got a very big score, and I would have to agree. I really liked this. Fairly rich for an SB which made it a very easy drink. Has impressive complexity.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Not a fan of Garys' as most of the wines are simple and boring to me. I admit that they are tasty ... but for the $$ I can do better. Although I have found more to enjoy in recent vintages from producers like Siduri. Not sure if it is the addition of WC or vintage ... or vine age. The 07 KB shows added complexity through the mid plate with its stemmy quality. I preferred this to the Rosellas.

  • 2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

After the SLH wines this was a nice savior to my palate. The bright red fruits and lighter feel suited me much better. This a fruity, juicy wine that avoids overt sweetness. Keefer is another the vineyard that has generally come off as simple and fruity to me but this seems prepared to take on an extra layer of flavor. Stood up to the food well. Ripe fruit with no heat.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Koplen Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Hmmm... when it comes to the KBs, me and FMIII may be aligned on this one. Aromatically this one really grabbed me. Big and by KB standards, slightly brooding. Love the earthy elements, perhaps brought on by the stem inclusion. Probably the first time of the night I noticed some tannin. A great combination of dark and red fruit.

  • 2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Having this following the Koplen exacerbated the candied quality. At first sniff I only smelled bubble gum. I went back to my food before returning to this wine. As with many of these wines, this is a bit of a berry fest. Very juicy and sweet. The Kanzler stays relatively light on the mouthfeel considering the concentration. Doesn't seems as extracted as previous vintages. This will be fun to follow. Pure pleasure right now but I am curious what will develop when the fruit settles down. I would guess it will it 4-5 years before that starts to happen.

  • 2007 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir 4 Barrel

    USA, California

I really liked this. Probably between this and the Koplen for WOTN. It sounds easy to say that this has bits of qualities of each of the wines but it really seemed to. At times I was noticing structure and earthy elements and at other times I was noticing bright berries and candy. Again not too heavy on the palate and nice balancing acidity.
