Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 1989 Schloss Schönborn Geisenheimer Schlossgarten Riesling Spätlese

    Germany, Rheingau

Deep golden yellow, looks quite evolved. Nose dominated by kerosine/vaseline aromas. On initial tasting quite tart but when poured a couple of hours after opening this had calmed down and come in to balance nicely. Spatlese rweight and richness and, despite being 20 years old, still carred spatlese levels of sweetness. Nicely mineral and refreshing with a sightly waxy-textured feel. Decent length. Good. ***

Flight 2 (1 Note)

  • 2002 Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl

    France, Alsace

Decanted. Full golden yellow, might take this for a Sauternes just looking at the deanter. Ripe nose, floral, fragrant, some pineapple, pear and peach and also a touch of spice and smoke. Very ripe and rounded attack, vsicous texture bolstered by the 15%abv, but smooth and no sign of heat on this bottle. Mineral, good line and long finish with the RS (Indice 2) showing towards the finish. Good match with porkbelly and lentils. Lovely. ****

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 1985 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Served alongside the 85 HLC. Paler colour, more raspberry-like, bright and vibrant. Nose of grouse, blood, a touch of iron and then the sweetness of fruit that I find typical of Chave. Relatively light, almost burgundian on the attack, then building weight and delivering raspberry fruit, mineral and iron. Impeccable poise, line and elegance cf the HLC's weightier, more brooding personality. ****

  • 1985 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Fuller, deeper colour than the Chave alongside. Sediment in the first glass despite having been stood upright for two months. Richer nose, more dark fruited and iron-rich, evolving in to a beef tea meaty intensity. Lush ripe fruit and a velvety texture on the attack balanced by good acidity following through to the long finish. A fascinating contrast to the Chave, both showing their house styles well, and on the night the Jaboulet wins for me. Again, excellent with grouse, red cabbage, game chips and bread sauce. Top ****1/2

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2002 Künstler Hochheimer Hölle Riesling Eiswein

    Germany, Rheingau

Goldcapsule, halfbottle. Full gold. Orange, marmelad, spices and passionfruit on the nose and following through to the palate. Obviously very sweet but nicely countered by the balancing acdity. As with the previous bottle in July, served with diced mango and passionfruit with a ricotta-based ginger and passionfruit cream. Hard to fault. *****
