Carrying over from the date thread, here are the regions to vote upon:

Washington
2004 Columbia Crest Syrah Reserve
2006 K Vintners Syrah Milbrandt Vineyard
2006 K Vintners Syrah Pheasant Pheasant Vineyard
2005 L'Ecole No. 41 Syrah
2005 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel

South Africa
2004 Glen Carlou Syrah
2005 Radford Dale Shiraz
2005 Waterford Shiraz Kevin Arnold

Chile & Argentina
2005 Montes Syrah Alpha
2005 Concha y Toro Syrah Marqués de Casa Concha
2005 Casa Lapostolle Syrah Cuvée Alexandre
2006 Luca Syrah
2006 Luca Syrah Laborde Double Select

Australia
2006 Torbreck Shiraz Woodcutter's
2006 Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Shotfire (Ridge)
2005 Mitolo Shiraz G.A.M.
2005 Kangarilla Road Shiraz McLaren Vale
2006 John Duval Wines Shiraz Entity
2006 Henry's Drive Pillar Box Red
2005 Glaetzer Shiraz The Bishop

France
2007 Saint-Cosme Côtes du Rhône
2005 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave St. Joseph Offerus
2005 M. Chapoutier St. Joseph Les Granits
2006 Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage

These all gave a good number of hits on Winesearcher so do a little hunting and post your preferences here.  Availability may be better on some nearby vintages to these shown, so that might be subject to change.

Let's see if we can nail down these two regions by end of week

You're so efficient.

I'm assuming one vote per person, per region?

Vote for as many as you like.  It will still boil down to one wine from each region.

For example,  my preferences are for either one of the K Vintners or L'ecole for Washington.
And Glen Carlou or Radford Dale for South Africa.

See how easy it is!

Long Shadows my first vote (Have a 6 pack on hand), K Milbrandt my second. For what it's worth, probably could taste all of the last 5 of those wines in Walla Walla that weekend at the Spring Release Weekend.

Don't have any experience with the SA wines, so I am open for anything.

After all my typing only one of the suggestions makes it - assuming the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is the Porcuppine Ridge. As I can find it but have never had it my 1st vote goes to: The others I couldn't find on Winesearcher for HK but have seen them.

Washington
2005 Long Shadows Wineries Syrah Sequel
Runner ups
2004 Columbia Crest Syrah Reserve
2005 L'Ecole No. 41 Syrah

For SA I'd love to vote for the Waterford, seem to recall PaulS rating this on his trip to SA but can't find it in HK on winesearcher. The only one I can is a 2005 Glen Carlou although I know the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah should be available as well so these would be my runners up.

Thanks, Wrighty

I know the winesearcher results were lowest for Asia so it might be hardest for you to get the wines.  We'll give some extra weight to those that you can secure or maybe it's not such a bad thing if everyone doesn't get the exact wines.  We're just trying to compare regions, for what it's worth.

Working on the Chile/Argentina selection and then we'll move on to France and Cali.

Thanks Fingers,

I'm quite excited by the Long Shadows, it's probably the first wine from all the tasting I've never heard off (if it gets voted in) and wouldn't have tried. Assume you're going to include an Aussie in the list somewhere? Would certainly place above S.America for Shiraz and based on the price for the Long Shadow would have thought E&E, Clonakilla and some of the Glaetzers would be in budget.

Australia will probably give us the most to choose from and it would not be easy to find something "difinitively Oz", so it may come down to a popularity contest.  I know the Thorne-Clark Shotfire and Peter Lehmann Borossa get touted, but I didn't particularly care for either one.  I might suggest a Two Hands or Chris Ringland but I look forward to what everyone else can come up with.

Since we're looking at up to six regions now, I hope we're not scaring people away.  I certainly wouldn't expect people to buy all six and drink them alone over 3 days (well, maybe Paul) .  That's why I'm grateful to the OC Poker crowd for getting together and we'll be able to try them all!

And, yes, the Long Shadows is exciting to me, too.  Even if it's a little more $$$

Chile & Argentina selections coming soon

my votes thus far:
2005 Long Shadows -- (wine exchange has this)
2004 Long Shadows -- (already in my cellar)
2006 K Vintners - Pheasant -- (wine exchange has this)

I completely struck-out at K&L, Wine House, Wine Exchange and L.A. Wine Co. for all the S.Africans, although K&L does have the 2003 Kevin Arnold -- I actually opened one last week and it was corked ... seemed like a good wine beneath the corkiness, though.  .... but there's many other places I can look, I'm just not sure they're online

I vote for the 2006 Montes - Alpha ... it's cheap, widely available, and consistenly a good QPR.

Very limited experience with Washington Syrah's outside of K-Vintners.  And it seems like people are excited about the Long Shadows- so I vote that for Washington.
S. Africa- no experience other than Cabs.
S. America group- I'll do the Luca Double Select- because I know Winex has it.

I'm really excited for this tasting and Poker again.

For Europe Syrahs, or at least Spain- the Finca Sandoval Manchuela 04- http://www.cellartracker.com./wine.asp?iWine=220818  - jumping the gun a little on this one.

S.America would be first
2005 Casa Lapostolle Syrah Cuvée Alexandre
then
2005 Montes Syrah Alpha M

I know I can get both and the Cuvee Alexandre's I've had (Cabs and merlots) have been great value.

On the Aussies, never heard of the shotfire and got offered a Chris Ringland last week but turned it down as it was being touted as a rarity. I can get the 2 Hands in HK but haven't been a fan, tried when it first came out and have tried the 03's again and also bought some 06 but didn't blow me away. The community rates the wines I have between 91.2 and 86 so a mixed bag Wright's Two Hands. I'll keep banging on about the E&E Black Pepper for Australia. Seems to have good distribution in the US based on Winesearcher

Have we anything lined up for France, Syrah's spiritual home?

I'm kind of hoping some you Northern Rhone fans (Jeremy?) will have a recommendation or two.

Let the nominations begin

First thing that comes to mind us the 2007 St Cosme CdR. 100% Syrah and what, I thought, was a very pure expression of the grape.

Are we looking for just Syrah, or is it open to all Rhone blends?

Let me think a bit and I'll get back.

Let's keep it in the non-blend category for regional comparisons.  I'm trying to stick with that for all areas

And the St Cosme is a great suggestion.  It will make the list

St Cosme is a great idea! I will be ordering it in any case next month. So my two possibilities are Kevin Arnold 2005 and St Cosme 2007.

Not so much luck for me on the S. Africa wines either.  Selection in this area is a bit limited.  My votes:

Washington:
2006 K Vintners Syrah Pheasant Pheasant Vineyard
2005 L'Ecole No. 41 Syrah

S. Africa:
2005 Radford Dale Shiraz (only one I could find)

Chile and Argentina:
2006 Luca Syrah Laborde Double Select (I could probably find the '06 M as well)

Hey everyone,

I need some input on Australia.  There is so much to choose from so I want to start with narrowing down vintage
From that, I will start with commonly held wines in CT.  And I want to keep it <$30.  For Maestro's sake, I will exclude Mollydooker.

2005, 2006, or 2007?

Thank you

Oz did have a great '05 vintage. I find myself running a bit hot and cold on wines such as Two Hands and most of the Chris Ringlands. You had Dead Arm last VT, so maybe strike d'Arenberg. But if shooting for widely available, and under $30...

What about:

Glaetzer Bishop
Hentley Farm Beauty
John Duval Entity
'06 Adelina Shiraz

Not sure on the '05 for these, or if Adelina or Hentley are widely available, but they are all good wines.

Glaetzer is supposed to make some good stuff.  I have an Amon RA that I won't touch for a while but i'd be open to trying some of the lower end stuff.

I had a thought while on my flight. If we choose the Sequel, it might be fun to try to source the Entity since they are both Duval wines. If you are truly trying to compare wines around the world, that would interject a constant into the equation.
