At a private tasting at JP, tasted this and the 2016. This is a really uninteresting and flat wine. Tannins nearly gone, no fruit, no depth. Nothing engaging that would give any hope that it will be worth drinking in 15 years. Had been decanted and shaken by staff two hours before tasting. Deep deep crimson color, long slow legs.

For me this bottle was personally disappointing. One bottle shared with friends back in March of this year was a good 3-4 pts better. It was classy, refined and just all around very, very good. This bottle never quite did much f anything for me. It was ok. The nose was better than the palate. Don't get me wrong, this is still a nice 93-94 bottle but it's not 97. The fruit is nice, the balance is quite good, the backing acidity says there's more time. Just not sure why this bottle was so much different than one just 6-7 months ago? I believe they were both bought at the same time and from the same retailer, but this one just doesn't seem to have the layers or the pedigree of the last bottle of '13, nonetheless, it's quite enjoyable with friends and food and good music!

Best of the World Wine Night (ex-Italy) (The csimm_M Estate): Another late evening, one shot taste. Classic, excellent vintage Insig, bang on in its drinking window, with ample and perfectly ripe dark berries and cassis, earth, mixed spice, dark florals, leather, dark chocolate, beautifully integrated but still present structure. Not quite the sophistication of the ‘96 mag of this from last fall, which was super BDX-y, but a step above the also excellent ‘01 of this from our tasting a year and a half ago. I’m with BS that every time I drink this wine from a good vintage, I really love it, and it brings back memories of past bottles and other longtime Napa and NorCal favorites like PM LP, Montelena, Montebello, Merryvale Profile, Heitz Martha’s, HSS, etc. It didn’t quite hit the top group—and I hear what IRBDW said about this perhaps being even better enjoyed on its own than against a group like this—but to be, for me, right there with the far dearer Scarecrow and Mag 7, well, as Bananarama sang, that’s really saying something. Beautiful now, but should hold well for at least several years, maybe more based on the ‘96. Seems like more unanimity among the tasters who’ve written TNs than any other wine, and that’s kinda nice to see. 96+

I was a bit disappointed with this bottle. When I last drank this a year ago it was the classic iron fist in a velvet glove and I scored it a 96. This time it still had a velvety texture but the fruit was missing that oomph. It still had a nice profile of blackberry, cassis, mocha and graphite. I decanted this 2 hours based on my last tasting but the wine did not need the extra air. This bottle confused me. Based on my last tasting of the 2012 I went out and bought 3 bottles of the 2016. Not sure now if I should hold those bottles till they hit the 10 year mark which seems to be a consensus of long time Insignia drinkers or pop them a little earlier while there is more fruit. This was easily bested by a 2016 Bevan EE which we also drank the same night. 93+

PnP (not shaken, sorry couldn’t help myself) not decanted fully however drank over 2 hours. I enjoy 2013s, especially for those wines that were really crafted well... this wine was certainly well made but like many Insignia’s I have had it didn’t wow me. I am not against Insignia but at $200/bottle I honestly, for my palate, feel there are better wines out there for the price point.

Nose muted, palate blue, dark red fruit, some
Blackberries, grassy and some herbal notes. Due to the lack of fruit concentration and already dwindling tannins (surprising for 2013) I am not sure how this will age. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a must drink now or else. rather it may not overly improve like others on this category for this vintage. Will be curious how the Backus compares.

After a subpar 2010 (thinking this may have been bottle variation or just a bad bottle), I pulled the 2012 the next night. We made homemade sauce with meatballs and sausage. This was a really nice, velvety wine with chocolate, vanilla and dark cherry. Polished off this very easily, would seek out more. Still 3-7 more years in it before the fruit fades.

One hour slow ox......a beautiful Bdx nose, deep, rich, almost succulent. The palate reveals much of the same and over 3-4 more hours of slow ox only improves further. WOTN for the majority of us at tonight's tasting. The layers of red/dark red/black fruit are so great and complex. The integration of the tannins/acidity are very balanced. This is drinking exceptionally well for those who love great Cali fruit. For the true Bdx crowd, more years in the cellar will reward, but it's sooo good right now!

Dark fruits, plum, cherry, cassis, herbal, floral like violet, some hint of mineral. Long finish. Very balance. Great wine. Not sure how they manage to keep this one alive and well every since release. No sign of shutdown like it is in suspension.

I've always liked Insignia fine but never loved it. I know that sounds boujee and pretty insufferable, and for that I apologize. But this bottle was off the charts -- dark fruit, chocolate and bright acid. Everything I want in a wine to pair with food. Liked it better than the '15 Sassicaia I drank next to it. I know! I know!

Quick note on this wine. I drank it over three days and it never lost its super overtly oaky quality. It was like eating wood chips, with bitter chocolate and not nearly the depth of flavor I was expecting. Hopefully it was just an off bottle, but it reminded me of Silver Oak, where the wine is hiding issues behind a wall of wood. Definitely expected a lot more.

1985 Cabernet Sauvignon vs 1985 Bordeaux (Lafayette, Ca.): Lovely Bordeaux nose of mushroom, cedar, olive oil and berry, lovely, rich cedar taste, at peak will last 20 years, nice lingering cedar taste on the long finish, needs 5 years to peak. My #3 of 7, Group #1 of 7.

Wild and Crazy Memorial Weekend - Sunday (Chris' Castle aka Melissa's Manor): Tasting this wine reminds me of what a privileged life I lead sometimes! Unfortunately, I have tasted this twice, and while this is an awesome wine which I would thoroughly enjoy (and should enjoy) by itself, both tastings where I had the privilege of drinking this were marked with unbelievable wines. While it didn't get lost in the shuffle, it likely didn't get the attention and accolades it richly deserves.

2002 Insignia - 2002 was a stellar vintage and Joseph Phelps makes some stellar wines! Insignia is a wine that when it is on, is one of the best Napa wines, and this bottle was definitely on! Dark, brooding fruit and a nice earthiness and leathery palate all in perfect harmony, together with some spice, toasty oak and tobacco and throw in some creamy dark chocolate and you have a stellar wine! Wish I could just sit down with this bottle and enjoy it for the delicious wine it is! Don't bring this wine to a tasting, rather open it for a dinner or just with a friend and sit back and enjoy the ride! Solid 96....slightly better than last bottle! In a great place right now, IMO.

Overripe and jammy with a smooth texture but lacks freshness and vigor and the finish just falls off without any complexity whatsoever. Better than the '97 drunk alongside but that isn't saying much. A perfect example of why you shouldn't age overripe Napa Cabs as this was much better in its youth.

I'm drinking my first Backus with a friend tomorrow over steaks. I have one of each bottle from 1997-2016. Planning on giving it 4+ hours of airtime. I'll probably open the bottle around noon and start a decant around 3. Open to thoughts ahead of time! I'll post after.

- Punted dinner to next day.
- pulled cork @1. Noticed cork was very soft on putting in the cork screw. Despite being very careful, cork broke.
- The immediate nose on this thing is MASSIVE. I won't taste yet. Just going to enjoy the bouquet the next few hours as I work some work done. :) I'll taste and consider decanting around 3.

Disappointing wine. We decanted over two and a half hours, and while the wine started backward, linear tannins, tight red berry fruit and heat. We paired this wine with venison tartar with biltong shavings. That proved to be a terrible pairing as the iron of the game led to highlighting the aluminum flaw in the finish of the wine. After about 80 minutes, the wine went really dumb on the palate and showed mostly soapy fruit with an abundance of camphor on the back palate. Past two hours, the bouquet developed but the body remained mostly dumb. I get the sense that acidity was low. Mouthfeel is quite thin, almost like water. My pairing at two hours was an elk chop, which should have been perfect for a Napa Cab but this wine lacked the mid body fruit and structure to complement any red meat.

Strangely, this wine isn't showing any nuances of forest floor, truffle or mushroom that one would expect after nearly a decade in the bottle.

QPR is awful for this wine.

All in, quite disappointing.

The nose is a little shy. It reveals; blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, plum, touch of rhubarb & blueberries and strawberries. Vanilla, light cinnamon, clove and soft, dark spice, just slight whiff of green pepper, dark turned earth, limestone and red and dark flowers.

The 2012 vintage generally drank well right away. Now that this 12 has four years in the bottle, it’s very approachable. This said from someone who loves old(er) red wines. The tannins are round grainy. The body lighter than other Insignia’s. Blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries, cherries, dry cranberries, plum, touch of rhubarb & blueberries and strawberries. Vanilla, light cinnamon, clove and soft, dark spice, suede leather, fresh tobacco leaf, steeped tea, dark turned earth, limestone, crushed dry rocks with red and dark flowers. The acidity is fresh and lively. The finish is good yet leaner than previous vintages at this stage. It’s fresh and lively. Balanced but, the fruit is bright and really shines. It still a ways to go to get to where I would open one of my bottles. But, somewhat tempting now to open a bottle.

This vintage seems to need more time in the bottle than previous vintages I have had. If you must drink it soon, definitely decant whole heartedly. I would not open this for another 5-8 years though. Not showing half the potential it has to offer.

I am a big lover of Insignia, especially when it is closer to 10 yrs old. This one is really young, relatively open and broad, with that distinctive Phelps flavor profile, but Insignia is never heavy or over bearing. This will probably score a point higher in 2026 or so.

Here is a fabulous 99 point wine by Robert Parker.

Dark ruby in color with a short reddish rim.

Great nose of blueberries, blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, earth, vanilla, Mediterranean spices, espresso, cola, light herbs, chocolates, tobacco and black pepper.

Full bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and fruity on the palate with blackberries, black cherries, figs, cedar, chocolates, vanilla, licorice, spices, tobacco, herbs, light earth, cola and peppercorn.

Long finish with round tannins and tangy cherries.

This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux blend from Napa Valley.

Showing nice balance and a great mouthfeel. Round and rich. Elegant and smooth.

This 22 year old still has a lot of power in it, and will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 10 years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 2 hours of airtime.

So soft and powerful, with a great nose. This is a gorgeous wine right now.

A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. Aged in all new French oak barrels for 24 months.

13.9% alcohol by volume.

96 points.

$250.

I paid $110 for this a number of years ago and have 1 bottle left. It’s hard to drink a bottle with an upper $300 auction value even with prime filet mignon. I’m a believer that no wine is worth more than about $100, I guess unless you are a 1 percenter and although this was quite good, it makes the point. Nose included sous bois, ketone-like notes (maybe more like nail polish of days gone by) and crushed blackberry. Caressing blueberry, black pepper and smooth tannins frame the wine with a feminine feel. Some length to the finish. $110, maybe, $300....????

Insignia is one of my and possibly my favorite wine. Always amazing and I have not had a vintage that I haven't loved. This 2006 is drinking great. Decanted about an hour but it was very nice even just after decanting. Not sure what it would have been like after the hour because it was ll gone by then but I assume it would have continued to improve. This 2006 is definitely ready to enjoy now and I think it will hold up for many more years with proper cellaring.

Wine started out with lots of Oak. As time went on it seemed to become very thin, flabby and become very sweet. Was very tight. Perhaps needs more time in the bottle. Myself and my wife did not care for this at all. We didn't finish the bottle.
