Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 206 notes)

Tasted by Brett on 1/30/2010 & rated 93 points: Great wine as always. (626 views)
Tasted by Beaune on 1/29/2010 & rated 85 points: The 2001 in Magnum drank very nicely. Tannins much less harsh then in the young 2006 I tried last week. Good structure, nice wine in magnum (669 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 1/26/2010 & rated 88 points: Full black color. Big black fruit with extremely grippy tannins & a chalky element. A baby, but I'm not sure the tannins will integrate before the fruit falls out. (1107 views)
Tasted by pikemasterflash on 1/9/2010: Difficult to score. Good but maybe a bit more menthol than I would have expected. Better than a recent '89 Pichon Baron but not as good as I was hoping for. (1058 views)
Tasted by budman on 12/28/2009 & rated 94 points: Drinking extremely well. Even better than the 95 I had a few day's ago at my brother's. (1522 views)
Tasted by jamesblanch on 12/27/2009 & rated 93 points: (855 views)
Tasted by kgh on 12/25/2009 & rated 95 points: Luscious fruit right up front on the palate, with wonderful soft mouthfeel and soft, supple tannins. Definitely near its peak right now. (1328 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 12/25/2009 & rated 90 points: decanted. rather hard and firm tannins that i can't see being tamed by the fruit. i wasn't put off by the wine as a total entity, but for such an iconic napa wine, it doesn't measure up to it's rep. (1491 views)
Tasted by bigdogflow on 12/24/2009 & rated 94 points: (891 views)
Tasted by JJL on 12/24/2009 & rated 95 points: From magnum - the Cali hit parade continues. Like a lot of other '01's I have had recently, this bottle was in the zone, completely balanced, great bordeaux nose, cherry and blackberry flavors on palate, not overdone. Better than the '97 the night before, but that bottle probably will probably benefit from more age, whereas the '01 is ready now. (1236 views)
Tasted by Vin Rouge on 12/19/2009 & rated 96 points: A fantastic wine! Beautiful full bodied berry flavors and nice smooth finish. What a treat! (1324 views)
Tasted by Mike V on 12/18/2009 & rated 94 points: Wow. This is nice. Huge nose with cedar and dark fruit. Resolving tannins, chocolate and black fruit on the long palate. No flaws and a joy to drink. Not well matched with pulled pork. If you have these it is ok to start tasting. (2035 views)
Tasted by huntly on 11/29/2009 & rated 95 points: The color alone gets the palate warmed up. Dark purple with a lush full sparkle. the nose is equally tantalizing with dark fruit and a hint of tar. The mid-palate fulfills the promise with dark berries, tar, herbs and a touch of earth. Tannis structure is firm and well integrated, but not sweet. The finish is a full 70 seconds and remains fully thick on the mouth. We decanted for 2 hours, and I think we could have gone a third. Wine is fine to drink now, if you own a few bottles, but would wait if you want to hit the peak. (2256 views)
Tasted by Eck on 11/23/2009 & rated 92 points: (1645 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 11/17/2009 & rated 94 points: Very "young" wine with excellent fruit and grip. Blackberry, cassis, mint, oak, rasbeery, spice..goes on and on. Lots of time. (2967 views)
Tasted by cparkhurst on 11/11/2009: This wine is way too young. I decanted 2 hours and still it was tight. Very inky (2992 views)
 Tasted by Double D on 10/18/2009 & rated 95 points: (2125 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 10/15/2009 & rated 95 points: Has upward potential. Much concentration of crushed black fruits, oak and touches of spices on the nose, full palate of flavors, rich, with chewy tannins. Really delicious to drink tonight, and much promise ahead. A very successful and long lived Insignia. (3386 views)
Tasted by cococafe on 9/30/2009 & rated 93 points: (2503 views)
Tasted by rthun on 9/25/2009 & rated 95 points: (Cult California Cabernet tasting @ Martin Weiner’s) The 2001 Insignia is a great wine. Deep purple color with a nose of vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon and dark fruits. Plush, round mouth feel. Deep flavors of dark fruit, boysenberry and forest floor. Nice balance between the alcohol and fruit. 30 second finish. Drinking well now and should drink great for another 10 years. (3660 views)
Tasted by EileenB on 9/20/2009 & rated 93 points: Double decanted (3 hours) and took to restaurant. Nose was great at rebottling, strong cherry and fruits, but then closed down a bit. Eventually brought out chocolate and red fruits, but this was lighter bodied that I expected. Very good wine, but expected more for the price... (3887 views)
Tasted by redbaron on 9/15/2009 & rated 95 points: (2078 views)
Tasted by CMCLR on 9/8/2009 & rated 91 points: Millie likes it more than I do. Not enough body or fruit. (4201 views)

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in almost 10 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
