12/9/2009 - GUTuna wrote: 84 pointsNotes of citrus on the nose. Not particularly sweet for a Riesling. Nice balance of acidity which leads to a good mouth feel. Overall a light wine, much more suited to an aperitif rather than to be paired with a meal. That being said, for the value, it's one of my favorite Virginia Rieslings. |

12/31/2009 - ChrisinCowiche wrote: 87 pointsDark purple color. The nose starts with light red fruit then opens to vanilla and butterscotch with herbal notes. The midpalate is full bodied with smooth tannins and the finish is a refreshing black pepper and fresh mint. Really interesting and balanced throughout. |

3/18/2011 - grayfont wrote: 82 pointsThe "touch sharp" in my prior note was more severe in this bottle, so we opened another bottle to see if perhaps this was an off bottle. Unfortunately, both of the two bottles today were the same. The prior note still generally holds true (full mouthfeel/pepper notes from cab franc/etc) but the sharpness is more dominant, really to the point of distracting from the wine. Disappointing. |

5/28/2011 - ChrisinCowiche wrote: 90 pointsOpened on a Friday and noted sharp odors similar to gray's TN. Rather than pour it out, left in decanter, and didn't revisit until Sunday. Funky sharp notes on first re-sniff, but gone and then very smooth, complex wine revealed itself. Due to wine overload for the weekend, this bottle lasted until Monday night and final glass was still full of vibrant fruit, very nice balance and meidium drying tannins at the finish. I don't know if the sharp notes are a shut down sign or just something that needs to blow off with an extra long decant. Don't pour it out, let sit and recheck periodically. |

11/11/2012 - grayfont wrote: 88 pointsdecided to revisit this again after the disappointing showing in March. Pop and pour through the vinturi. Happy to report that tonight's bottle was terrific. In fact, after all of that "sharp" discussion below, the wine tonight wasn't sharp in any way. It was rich and deep, with a dark purple color and a palate of red/blue fruit flavors to match. quite happy with this. |

The nose had some unpleasantness about it, and the flavor was just kind of meh. Also loads of sediment in bottle. Cave Ridge sits in a beautiful location -- but can't compete with the likes of Glen Manor or Linden in terms of quality or taste. |

2/22/2011 - grayfont wrote: 90 pointsDecanted 45 minutes, which turned out not to be enough. At that point, the wine was a touch thin (though smooth as promised!). About 30 minutes later, some fullness started to appear as a smoky backdrop to that classic cab franc pepper emerged. I would think 90 minutes decanting at this point would be ideal. This is a stylish wine, very well enjoyed. |

12/1/2015 - erikdahlin Likes this wine: NRInitially a bit concerned by what looked like a bit of cork leakage, and a trace of sediment on the first pour. Nose seemed flat, and first two sips did not convey the depth that I'd hoped 8 years would impart. But color me surprised, because this actually came alive in my glass and was very drinkable. |

1/24/2011 - grayfont wrote: 90 pointsI am oh-so-bummed I didn't buy more than one bottle of this. Why didn't it speak to me in the tasting room the way it does today? Was I so enamored of the Cave Ridge Red Silk (tasted prior in the lineup) that I missed the peppery, Cab Franc-like goodness of this Syrah, which has all that but also retains the Syrah power that a Cab Franc couldn't have? Excuse me while I head to their website to see about getting some more... |

1/16/2012 - grayfont wrote: 84 pointspop n pour. some bottle funk and a plastic odor on opening which dissipated after about 5-10 minutes. after that, the nose was not very expressive but the wine is bursting with bright red fruit on the palate. the wine's color is on the pink/red side of purple and, visually, it is unusually thin & transparent for a cab franc. in the mouth this wine has medium body and a medium length finish with the sour fruit more prominent on the finish than the cab franc pepper. quite drinkable, but based on this it's no surprise that randy did not see fit to produce a "red silk" bottling in this vintage. |

10/26/2012 - erikdahlin Likes this wine: NRSlate-y, brick red color, but not too dense. Peppery nose, but soft finish on first sip. Not too much there, but what is works. Might work with bacon-wrapped scallops...because it tastes a bit like that. Did work well with pizza. A pretty yummy bottle of grapes. |

7/16/2013 - grayfont Likes this wine: 88 pointsInky dark purple color. Starts out with a strong nose of dark fruit and comes across the palate with a spicy/peppery flourish. This really is quite enjoyable. Consistently one of my favorite producers in Virginia, and wines like this (and, of course, the Cab Franc in good vintages) are the reason why. |
