2001 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
11/5/2014 - pjaines wrote: NRWhilst I can admire the winemaking on display here I just struggle to get past that drying oak/tomato tang that seems to stick out. "No, its not you, its me" is the usual line that gets played out when dumping someone, but with me I really do think my palate has picked up an aversion to all forms of Rioja (both good and bad). And this one is good, its just that I dont like it. 9 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (13) |

2005 Château TalbotSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
8/10/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRAbsolutely singing right now - probably the first 2005 Bordeaux I've had that is not as hard as nails. This ticks all the St Julien cliches, and has the depth of fruit from 2005 to beef out its frame a touch. Beautiful balance, compact and showing some evolution. Lacks a bit of depth on the finish, but that is just nitpicking. Excellent right now. Good value. 4 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (9) |

2007 Chateau MusarBekaa Valley Red Blend more |
5/31/2014 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRPlumper and much sweeter than previous releases, this has a lot more up-front fruit certainly than the 05 and 04. Already drinkable but I think the fruit needs to back off a touch and the structure (of what there is) come to the fore to give it more balance. There is a concern that this veers towards the more fruit-bomb end of the Musar spectrum. For me this is worth a punt to stick in the cellar to see what happens. 2 people found this helpful, do you? 2007 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles VignesRed Rhone Blend more |
1/9/2017 - pjaines Does not like this wine: NRUtter filth. Just gloopy fruit and no structure. Massive heavy fruit. I really dont see how this could ever be rated so highly - everything is turned up to the max without any thought for how this ages. No tannins - all there is is just sweet fruit that flops onto the tongue and festers. I can't see this turning into a swan at all. Terrible. 3 people found this helpful, do you? 1971 Maison Albert Bichot Echezeaux Domaine du Clos FrantinEchezeaux Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
3/29/2014 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRAn intellectual experience more than a hedonistic one, this nevertheless has managed to keep hold of the guts and terroir you would expect of a Grand Cru. Beefy, soupy with meat, fennel, spices and black cherries. Holding on reasonably well, although the finish lacks the depth of a truly great Grand Cru. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 2009 Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du RoyPinot Noir more |
5/15/2013 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRThis takes a little time to unfurl but when it does it is really worth the wait. At first quite a strange paint-like smell, but slowly this opens like a flower to reveal cinnamon sugar, roses, black/red fruit. The palate is all about balance and firm tannins, with just a hint of camphor. Excellent stuff that has the stuffing to age and develop. One for the cellar for me, but these are so damned good now it will be hard to resist. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (6) |

2010 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis JadotCorton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
2/19/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRLike sneaking into some weird and wonderful sex club where strange and exotic things are just about to happen - the sap of anticipation rises - booom - then someone slams the door in your face. This has a tickle, a tease, a whiff of what is to come - all nuance and innuendo and then it shuts down and you can but just about imagine what excess lies ahead - a cornucopia of terroir and black fruit and minerals most likely. Oh sweet goddess of time please pass so one can kiss thine lips. Come quickly. 5 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (6) |

2000 Château FigeacSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
9/17/2013 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRThe Cab Franc elements are pushed right to the fore on this wine with a massive whack of leafy fruit underpinned with crunchy tannins. Excellent complexity with dry soil, pepper and touched of menthol Very impressive and drinking well right now. Not as full and plump as a lot of the 2000s. Impressive. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (5) |

8/25/2021 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRIf you love Burgundy but recoil and the prices then you need to get your ass over to Franche-Comte to see Msr Guillaume because these wines (and indeed all his pinot noir) are truly brilliant and superbly affordable. 2 people found this helpful, do you? 2006 Château Gruaud LaroseSt. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more |
1/17/2015 - pjaines wrote: NRUsually I am a fan of super mature wines but this really is already sitting in a nice place where structure, fruit acidity and balance all align into a wine that is Bordeaux-cliche. All cedar, leather, black fruit, minerals and lightness. Lovely stuff - ready now and I'd be inclined to not bother with much more ageing (and I am not a fan of younger wines either) Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (5) |

2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Gran Reserva 904Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
9/10/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRArrrrrrrrr. The sound of a man returning to good Rioja. 2 years back I had a 2001 of this wine that was all oak and tomato and I vowed to stay away. Well, this sorted it out - a great wine with balance, depth and balance without ever reverting into the overtly drying oaky notes. There is a touch of oak of course but the brilliance of the fruit and complexity on the nose really elevates this wine. Good now, superb in 10 years. 7 people found this helpful, do you? 2011 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Rosso di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
2/21/2014 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRYurp! This will do - a nice mid-week quaffer and all rounder that is cheap enough to serve to the neighbours who drop ice cubes into their red, but also decent enough to drink yourself. Lots of loose-knit tannins and structure - red berry fruits - medium bodied. Nice stuff - and remember...if you are my neighbour then I'll serve this to you because you wouldn't know a decent glass of wine from a kick in the face.... 2 people found this helpful, do you? 1/19/2022 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRWow! This really is pure essence of sea breeze. Genuinely saline on the palate with zingy lemons and almost mouth-puckering acidity. This is quite wonderful. Will age for years. My brain is constructing a Venn diagram of sea water, Chablis-at-its-most-Chablis, chalk, fresh air and a view from a mountain overlooking the Adriatic sea. 5 people found this helpful, do you? 1964 Federico Paternina Rioja Conde de los Andes Gran ReservaTempranillo Blend, Tempranillo more |
4/28/2012 - pjaines wrote: NRAt this age just it comes down to good bottles, not great wines. Amazing nose of ...welll, I dont really know what it was but it was brilliant. Plums? Cherries? Farmyard? I have no idea. Mixed up and mature and with a touch of aniseed. The palate was faded and showing some age and died off after 30 minutes but this was a superb example of how long wines can last. I loved this wine - there was a touch of cabbage and dead fruit there .....but it is a 1964 wine for goodness sake. Excellent experience. Drink now and drink quickly. Do you find this review helpful? 2011 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles VignesPinot Noir more |
7/2/2017 - pjaines wrote: NRBack in the old days (2009) before I had started drinking Burgundy I had a Bachelet 2004 Cotes d Nuits and remarked how is smelled of charcoal. And here we are in 2017 with a lot of Burgundy under the bridge and there it comes up again: Charcoal. This time my brain can cope with it and this time it sits atop a beautiful wine with deep red fruit but punctured through like those charcoal and tangy notes that defy explanation when you dont have the Burg-tongue; I guess these days I'd call it meaty and briny and some other word, but charcoal seems to work. Great stuff. Could really do with 5 more years, but you wont be killing it by opening one right now. 4 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (4) |

2007 Château de FonbelSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
3/21/2014 - pjaines wrote: NRThese 2007 wines, the pug ugly ginger-step children of the last decade, are actually starting to turn out some decent wines - at least for those who abhor gobs of fruit, and lashings of various berries (what the feck is a boysenberry?). This wine has a nice balance between the up-front fruit of the right bank, the slightly dodgy vintage and the early maturing tendencies of 2007.....the result is a wine that is pretty good. A touch of this, that and the other......black fruit, cherries, tannins and complexity.....all without the Parkeresque "gobs of fruit"...whatever that means. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 2013 Château de Chamilly Mercurey Clos la PerrierePinot Noir more |
10/15/2017 - pjaines wrote: NRProper Burgundy! A really good nose on this with all those high toned cherry notes and then slapped through with a tiny bit of feral, earthy action. Benefits from 30 minutes of air and being served at cellar temperature - lots of iron and minerals on the palate with a tangy finish. Reminds me of the Pataille Marsannay wines with its loose knit finish. Stupidly good value at £19. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

12/26/2021 - pjaines Does not like this wine: NRThis wine is a complete disgrace and insult to moderation... taste.. good wine making. This is sweet... stewed... it is not even a fruit bomb but a tired flabby crappy peice of junk. The best phrase i hear about Parker ( who gave this peice of crap wine 100 points) is that in wine terms he likes blondes with big boobs. Ignore the cellartracker scores on this crime scene of a wine and search out better things. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

10/27/2013 - pjaines wrote: NRPretty unmemorable at first, but I came back to this the next day after it had been left unforgotten in the kitchen like a ginger-stepchild......and it had turned into a reasonable passable Bordeaux. A touch of leafy elements in there (Cab Franc?) counterbalanced by decent enough black fruit. Nice, quaffable Bordeaux of a quality elevated slightly above the hoi-polloi. 11/29/2016 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRA regal and fine specimen that exudes restrained class. Pure, clean with a firm spine but never angular. This is seriously polished and still a long way from really being ready, with no sign of heaviness at all. This will be going strong for another 30 years without breaking sweat. 10/19/2012 - pjaines wrote: NRThe quality oozes out of this wine straight from the off. Very typical nose of dry herbs, black fruit and meat. In the mouth this is already starting to show some development - very long finish with bacon and liquorice coming through. Very impressive finish - should be quite something in another 10 years. Excellent. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

12/2/2015 - pjaines Likes this wine: NRSpectacularly unexpected brilliance here through and through from its crystal clear appearance through to its shifting aromas. I was surprised how open this is already - Meaty, perfumed and feral all at the same time - this has a real depth and elegance to it, with some dark cherry and grilled meat action going on. Tannins are perfect here, with a defined, linear structure that works beautifully with the fruit, not one thing gets in the way of the other. Excellent. 2 people found this helpful, do you?
