2016 Gaja Barbaresco

Nebbiolo more

4/19/2019 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 95 points

The 2016 Barbaresco, bottled only two weeks prior to tasting, was drop dead gorgeous, wonderfully exotic, and remarkably pretty. The bouquet at this time comes and goes, sometimes an intense mix of spicy florals, deep cherry, dusty spice and woodland earth tones, and then suddenly withdrawn, showing roses, sweet herbs, strawberry and a hint of animal musk. On the palate, I found a feminine expression, yet silky and refined, as mineral-encased tart cherry saturated the senses, along with savory spice and inner floral tones. It’s structured showed most on the finish, as tannins mounted with each sip, clenching the senses, in spite of it all, tart cherries and spice tones lingered on. I’m looking forward to tasting this again after some time in bottle, but today it’s beautiful.

In a blind flight, we were enjoying this wine the more we sat with it. Was the only wine to come close to the energy, complexity, and explosiveness of the Vietti Ravera served in a previous flight. There were some guys in the group not wanting to embrace Gaja, but we all had to admit this was an excellent, if not great Barbaresco.

While typically not my wine or choice this was a wonderful surprise- a cross between a Burg and a little more umph. No notes, just impressions of a wonderfully young 20 year old barb.

Perfect bottle, but gently fading. Slight acetone blows off and shows lovely depth and acidity. 5yrs past peak but still very grand. 93pts

For me the big hit of our 5 bottle Italian wine dinner. Medium body. Earthy and lush dark fruits. So consistent. Just got better and better with every sip.

Beautiful color. The nose is quite fruity, showing strawberry, rhubarb, raspberry, underbrush and minerals with a floral undertone. This is tight and tannic on the palate, with very good concentration and lovely finesse. The long finish shows vibrant acidity and big tannins. Classy and pure.

The 2015 Gaja Barbaresco resembles a young Pinot more than Nebbiolo. Medium ruby in colour, heavy on dark red and purple fruit aromas with some reductive notes as well. This strange reductive fruitiness while completely normal and even pleasant is not what I would expect of a top quality Nebbiolo from Barbaresco.
While the wine is really good per se, imvho it can’t be considered among the finest representatives of it’s region.

In a great and interesting spot. Would not have called this Barolo in a blind tasting as it had a mix of Burgundian fruit and Bordeaux earth features. Well above expectation

Ahhh... This is poetry in a bottle. Deep purple colored, with a rich body and great complexity. Aromas of dark cherries, blackberry, lavender, walnut, leather, truffle, cedar, tar and spices. It has a subtle texture and ripe tannins. Needs som air to open up. Pure class and finesse!

Outstanding though understated, not leaping from the glass, but taking some time and coaxing. Allowed to breathe in glass 1 hour before tasting. Clear deep blood-ruby red color. Complex bouquet of roses, liqueurs of red cherry and raspberry, potpourri, stony red soil, juniper berry, lavender, wintergreen, lapsang souchong, and leather. Tart on the palate with mouth-coating tannins, balanced, seamless, full body, very food friendly. Some astringency and bitter quinine on the finish, but these improved after a few hours. Held up fine under vacuum stopper in refrigerator for 4 days. Apparently 1995 was not the best vintage for Piedmont. I slightly preferred the normale blended vineyard bottling, tasted last winter, to this single vineyard bottle.

Decanted for 2.5 hours-bright nose of red berries and crushed stone fruits. Roses and floral notes prevail on a balanced wine. The palate follows on a tannic platform the lasts forever. Had with duck breast and fall veggies- a great wine that deserves respect for it’s 20 years in the bottle. Drank over 2 hours. Wow

(Tasted at the Vintage Piedmont Tasting at the Wine Watch, Ft. Lauderdale). This is a fabulous, fully mature Barbera. It has a very dark, opaque purple color, and a nose of earth, florals, violets, and black fruit. This Barbera tastes of ripe blackberries, cherry cola, raspberries, leather, and smoky oak. It is old world in character, full bodied with crisp acidity, and has a smooth mouth feel. Although this wine is almost 20 years old, it still retains it's youthful fruit flavors. Excellent!!

Incredibly dark, youthful and tannic, this 22-year-old Piedmont has developed an animal aged Bordeaux like nose which stumped all my fellow wine lovers a few evenings ago. Atypically dark for Nebbiolo with perfectly balanced mid-palate and finish, this wine will continue to evolve effortlessly for the following 10 year and maybe beyond. I fear recent Gaja wines will never be as sensational as they were in this heralded vintage. 1996 still continues to be my reference point for what Piedmont can achieve in a sensational vintage. Amazing!

Battle of Barbaresco, cooperative Produttori against Gaja, the king of Barbaresco. Vintages 85, 90 and 01 tasted against each other. Some fruit grasping for a breath but dies quickly in the glass. Smell of old cheese and Madeira. Had higher hopes for this one, bad storage suspected.

A big, brooding, monstrous beast of a wine. Floral moves to tar and then iron on the nose. The longer it sits open, the more brooding it gets. The palate is still tightly wound, concentrated and dark. With a mix of white truffle courses (risotto, scrambled eggs, roast chicken), it was absolutely delectable and balanced very well against the earthy food.

Slow-ox for 60 minutes, then decanted for another 30 minutes before service. In the glass, rusty red and clear, with pronounced legs. On the nose, a wonderful mixture of roses, plums, and oak, bursting from the glass. On the palate, plums, cherries, rosewater, and a bit of tar, well balanced, with some tannins still present on the long finish. This is drinking quite well now, but I think 3-5 more years are needed to hit the peak. With linguine and a sage, mushroom, and cream sauce, just wonderful.

Barolo at RPM Steak (RPM Steak - Chicago, IL): A wow wine. Massive aromas with a broad bouquet of tar and dried roses that are intermixed with cherries. Nose goes on for days. The palate matches the aromatic fireworks with perfectly mature, balanced and complex fruit. Long, long finish. An epically good wine.

Dinner with Greg (L'Envol Restaurant, St. Regis Hotel, Wan Chai, Hong Kong): Briefly decanted then drank over 2 hours between two of us. Translucent, almost transparent bright jewelled lambs blood. Nose is slightly muted but very seductive warm red asphalt, violets, warm hillside Italian herbs, Soft tobacco from a pipe smoker's pouch. Palate is drop dead silky gorgeousness. Wow... explodes on the palate and in your head... totally silence-creating. So silky and integrated but with a structure to carry it for many years. Precision and seduction. Lots of freshness but with an almost compote depth of ripe red and black cherry fruit. Thunderously resonant and reverberant at the back of the central cortex but in a contradictory soft and silky way. Comparisons with a top Vosne Romanee seem about right. Drinking beautifully now but with many years ahead for it to unfurl further. 94+

Champagne and Nebbiolo Afternoon (aka Drink Like You're in Piemonte) (Private residence, San Francisco): Ruby center with gradual lightening. Ooh, lovely mature old wine aromas full of mellow polished balsam wood that reminded me of some old Riojas. Lovely feel in the mouth, round, long, and harmonious. Generous and chocolate richness, but this is balanced by fine acidity and late citrus. Not a great deal of soil, but it is hard not to be impressed by such lively, singing fruit in a wine of this age. Definitely the wine of the flight and one of my top 2 in the entire tasting.

Gary's Intro Retro -- Italia!: Served double blind. A full attractive nose that is polished and forward. Big black cherry, spice with nice underlying herb and tar. Palate sports black cherry that is bright and starting lose it's baby richness. Bright acidity. Incredible power here. Young, but no longer primary (unlike the '97 tasted immediately before this which was quite primary). My #3 and group #4.

Slightly lifted nose savoury nose with smoke, salt liquorice, tar, black tobacco, mushroomy earth, gamey character and such dominating the black cherry fruit. A touch of rubbery oak as well.
Full bodied palate dusty tannins, adequately balanced mid-level acidity and chewy fruit. Again it's the company of stone dust, tar and tobacco that seem to rule palate. Dry, masculine and rustic within the style of Gaja. Long chewy finish.
Drank alongside Sorì Tildìn and Costa Russi this was the meanest and less elegant of the bunch. Not many subtleties here, but I like this nonetheless quite a bit.
I saved some for the 2nd day: better balanced, the acidity is in control and the texture seems more finely-tuned. Still not a cuddly wine, but more approachable for sure. Probably needs more bottle age than the other two.
