2008 Schrader Cellars Zinfandel Vieux-Os Old Vine Tofanelli Vineyard

My initial infatuation with this wine has diminished somewhat. It's still decent and still doesn't resemble Zinfandel much to me, but it may be that it's just not enough of any one thing. I like it though.

I opened this bottle after reading Niagara's comment that this was not like a zinfandel and more like a pinot noir. Well, I'm sorry to have to report that this wine has nothing to do with pinot. It's forceful. Lots of red fruit, chocolate and caramel with a thick almost syrupy mouthfeel. Amazingly long finish which in fact did have some peppery notes. It is a good wine but not subtle. More of a main course or stand-alone drink than anything else. Oh, and the shape of the bottle is absurd!

Would never have been able blind to tell this was a Zin. More like a big pinot noir with bright red fruit and a lack of peppery spice. Much to my taste, but unexpected.

Decanted for 3+ hours and it was almost ready. Great bottle of Schrader from my favorite vineyard. Similar in tone to others, including Benoit's Fait Main and Mike Smith's Carter and Quivet. This is a little different as TRB extracts more fruit and less of the other nuances (that give LPV the it factor). Dark bramleberry and blackberry fruits, a little burnt and just a well rounded solid effort.

Slow ox for 4 hours. Also has LPV's from Quivet and Carter.

This was the smoothest of the three. Also had a bit of sweetness, which made it more approachable. More of a "crowd pleaser" - the girls like this one the most.

Baking spices were present on the nose. Fruit was purple. Plum. Bit more velvety on the palate.

This was not my favorite off the bat, but I did keep going back for another splash - just so drinkable. A very pretty wine that can drink now if you are so inclined.

Slow ox for 6 hours. Also had a 2014 Fait Main from LPV open.

That was very consistent with my note from 12/25/16. Purple fruit and an amazingly smooth and drinkable profile.

I took a taste of these when first open, and the Schrader was more "polished" and drinkable on pop and pour (although the Fait Main had the more interesting nose). After the slow ox, the finish on the Fait Main had smoothed out and it was certainly on par with the Schrader (and maybe better).

Two very fine wines that showed well. I think this Schrader can be popped and enjoyed any time.

Note: Revisited the last 1/3 of the bottle on Day 3 (open about 54 hours total at this point). Had maybe lost some vibrancy, but certainly hadn't fallen off. Will say the Fait Main had opened up even more and was better after this "extended" air time.

Mike Smith Tasting and Wine Dinner PART #2: Vastly less concentrated than the 2012 Schrader LPV I’ve had previously, and a shadow of a wine when compared to the 2014 Colesworthy served beside it. On top of it all, this was also side-by-side with a 2014 Carter LPV, which also beat it into submission. Overall, this 2014 Schrader LPV was one of the more lackluster performers of the evening. More red-fruited, with not much minerality or gravel components usually indicative of the LPV site.

Drink now, as I don’t think time will do much to add weight to this wine. A bit of a bummer given its QPR and reputation. The 2014 Colesworthy was better, but not significantly. The 2015 Schrader LPV and 2015 Colesworthy served in the following flight were much better. Yet, the standard Schrader LPV (both in 2014 and 2015) seemed be comparatively second and third-rate when the Carter LPVs came in and wreaked havoc on Fred’s prized possessions. I was pretty shocked actually.

I have a couple bottles of this in the cellar, so I’ll have to check it out in a more controlled environment where it isn’t getting its ass handed to it in a playground full of athletes. I’ll put a diaper on it next time and hope it doesn’t sh** the crib when I give it a shot in another 6-12 months. 91-ish points during this experience.

I get CSIMM1161's most recent post on this wine as this was nice but not very exciting or concentrated given its price. Actually liked a 2010 Roy Piper better that was drunk along side this wine (although their styles were very different and the Piper seemed a bit young yet). The LPV was very smooth, nuanced and a nice suede mouthfeel but a bit thin and lacking energy. Drank after 4 hours slow ox and over 3 more hours. I liked it (especially if someone else bought it!) but not a good QPR.

2014 Quivet LPV and 2014 Schrader LPV side-by-side.

Unripe blackberry, raspberry seeds, and asphalt make up the profile here, with a lithe attack that rides a little flat on the mid-palate. Finishes a bit thin, with some bitter minerality on the back end.

The Schrader came off as a more serious and direct expression of the site, reminding me a bit of the 2012 Hobbs LPV (decidedly linear and contained in its delivery). The Schrader came off angular when compared to the more opulent Quivet. The Quivet was more demonstrative and had more sex appeal, but still maintained a similar focus as the Schrader. The Quivet was not overtly flashy, but definitely more fleshy and gratuitous. The cut on the Schrader was notable, but almost too much in front of the fruit.

Similar to my last experience with the 2014 Schrader LPV, I cant help but wonder where this wine is ultimately headed. Age MAY help, but I worry about the fruit getting lost more and more over time. What stuffing it has seems somewhat timid and narrow. What flavors it shows are certainly nice and all, but intensity and concentration don’t seem to really flourish here.

93+? points. For those holding bottles, try in 2020+?

Egged on to open this by my Schrader hater friend, it appears I have committed infanticide. The nose represents the LPV site just about perfectly, with blackberries, raspberries, smoked meat, scorched earth, wet pavement and violets really capturing the imagination as it bursts from the glass. I find this to be very big and concentrated, but not in a sweet or offensive way. The alcohol is still very prominent however, with really serious gripping tannins that are going to need more time to unwind. The fruit is super pure and it shows the potential for great complexity and development IMO. The finish is very, very long but definitely getting some astringency at the moment. Not real integrated yet and certainly on the linear side of things. I would hide this away for some time and expect it to develop into something much better. 94-96

Tastes okay but very turbid ... incredible amount of sediment both settled and suspended. Decanting solved only part of the problem. This degree of fines is a flaw, in my opinion, so no rating given.

Gravel, scorched earth, blackberries and wonderful minerals on the nose. Ripe and beautiful on the palate. Seriously endowed, but a enough acid and tannin to round out the frame. Delicious wine, that is in its drinking window right now. I loved the wine, but slight disappointment from a QPR standpoint.

Brooding serious bottle. More minerality, gravelly profile than other bottles ive had. Csimm summed my bottle well. Put some aside for tomorrow. Will report back

Day 2. Definitely improved. Put on weight with a more dark fruit profile. 94 day 2. Opened vs 15 old sparky which wasnt a match.

not picking up what Robert Parker was putting down on this as a 99-pointer. Seems underextracted for a Schrader wine (not that that's a bad thing), but instead of light & elegant it comes across as just sort of muted & uninspiring. Schraders are usually quite precocious, but who knows, maybe this one needs more time.

Drank over 2 nights. 1st day decanted for 1 hour, rebottled for ride to restaurant and reopened 1 hour later, drank 1/2 the bottle over 2 hours. Tight at first, began revealing fruit and smoothness after 20 min. Big, blue & black fruits, minerals, rocks & earth. 2nd night was a bit sweeter & fruitier, as the tannins had melted away. Loved by all. Give it time to show its best!

Slow ox for four hours then consumed over an hour and a half. Really beautiful wine and the first LPV from Schrader that I've had. Nose of Blue and Black fruits. Palate was balanced, smooth, and firing on all cylinders. Long finish and beautifully integrated tannin. Some bordeaux characteristics to this wine with a Napa twist. Good to drink now or can age for likely 5 more years. 94+

Step up from my last bottle. Upon pnp the wine showed well with nice depth of fruit and notes of scorched earth and minerality. D3canted half and corked the other half bottle. This wine really degraded after an hour in the decanter, becoming moreangular with less fruit. The recorked wine on day 2 was much better with a stronger fruit profile. I would not decant this wine.

This is a beautiful wine on its own. Big bold fruit bomb but did not stand up against VHR and Fairchild of the same year. A bit too acidic and a bit too fruit forward. If you are drinking this wine on its own, you will not be disappointed, its "flaws" show clearly when put next to wines with more finesse. This wine has years in front of it and there is enough fruit to outlast the extreme acidity. A very nice wine.

Served blind alongside the 2014 RBS, which for me was the better wine. The LPV was dark, intense, chewy, with good acidity and tangy dark blackberry fruit. Actually, it stained the glass it was so dark and powerful.

Decanted for one hour. Nose of blackberry liquor, currant, mocha and forest floor. Ripe black fruit, chocolate, forest floor and fine tannins on the palate. Long, layered finish. Mouth coating and dense. Full bodied. Served with filet Béarnaise.
