1996 Castelvero Barbera d'Astimore |
10/19/2000 - timewithwine wrote: NRThursday, October 19, 2000 Cork pulled in a rush to get to the table on a weeknight. The bright red of the wine showed a tad brickish on the edges. Nose of cherry and earth/moss. The first glass tasted of tangy cherries, but the acid level in the wine was distracting. By the second glass the wine had integrated a little better and was more enjoyable; the suppleness of the wine showed more with flavors of cherry and spice. Yet the acidity is unmistakable. A good, simple wine without any depth. A personal preference for lower acidity in a wine makes me prefer the D’Alba to the D’Asti. With marinated pork loin and beans almondine. 10/19/00. |

1/9/2016 - Mike Kopanski wrote: 87 pointsFits exactly as it was designed. Very soft and fruity approach. Minty red cherry and soft strawberry on the nose. Mild cherry color. Medium bodied at best. Mild tannins. Lots of lingering cherry on the roof of the mouth. Typical big Italian style acid. By the finish the fruit tends more toward red raspberry. |

2/19/2017 - PennyBarr Likes this wine: 60 pointsA pleasant, light, inoffensive Sunday night wine - we drank it with Gorgonzola Dolce, water biscuits, Keens, Montgomery. Fair to say it lost its authority a bit but perhaps it isn't built for cheese. Little in the way of a forthright structure and low on tannins. Perked up a bit once the cheese was removed. There's another bottle which I think we'll try with tuna or pasta con funghi. |

3/29/2009 - garambler wrote: 88 pointsWhen I got this home from the store, I noticed that the label said 2004 (It had been mixed in with bottles of the 2007 vintage). I was upset. As I understood it, Cortese should be dead after 5 years. I decided to drink it and see (instead of returning it to the store). I had it by itself on 3/29/09. It had a subtle, but very pleasant bouquet of lemon, grapefruit, orange rind, vanilla and mineral aromas. On the palate, this was the most lemony wine I’ve ever tasted. It also had grapefruit, vanilla and mineral oil flavors. It was quite good…a little simple, but I liked it. I’m not at all sorry I bought it! |

Still very adequate and downright tasty and also quite a bargain. A bit dry and lackluster on the mid palate. Mild tannins. Good but not great. |

10/7/2015 - cuffthis wrote: 87 pointsLight gold in color, this wine shows subtle green apple, Anjou pear and spices on the nose. The mouth feel brings refreshing but dry acidity and a fresh cut flower undertone. The finish is a little short but the acidity holds it together. |

The palate was a bit on the thin side, lacking much mid-palate, somewhat bitter tannins, average finish. Pretty meh even for a cheapy. |
