2016 Lucy Margaux / Domaine Lucci Pinot Noir Wildman

Adelaide Hills more

11/1/2019 - Pinot_Geek wrote: NR

Stinky-funky nose initially made me think I had a corked bottle, but it blew off after 10 minutes.
Fizz, tartness (lactic acid?) and medium fruit up front, big on the funk end of the Pinot spectrum. Savory, “animale”, meaty, this puts the“Wild” in Wildman. If it were a beer it would be a Belgian gueze, all sweaty horse blanket and sour.
Not your typical user-friendly Pinot from say, Oregon, this might be a good fit for lovers of “natural” wines (ie: weirdness).

Fizz and dry fruit. An excellent opener. Not super complex, but an interesting bubbly (Gruner fizz?? Who knew?). Eminently quaff-able and can stand up to appetizers and whatever else you throw at it.
Try it before a party or Thanksgiving.

Off-dry 12.5% alcohol Riesling. Initially tart-zingy and herbal with a touch of fizz, this evokes Chablis-esque minerality. Very good, and eminently food-friendly, but for me perhaps more admired than loved. I confess like my Rieslings edging closer to the “fun zone” of 9-10% alc.
But still...even now the taste is still with me. One more reason to explore the Disneyland of diversity and quality that is Riesling.

Stellar balance of herbal, fruit and barest hint of residual sugar. Wonderful. Shared this at a Riesling tasting-very well received. Will definitely seek out more of this label.

Honeyed, nutty, sweet dried stone fruits (peach, apricot), balanced by a spine of welcome acidity that keeps you going back for another taste. Just delicious. An out-of-left-field WOTN for me.

Spicy, bit of fizz, rich yet balanced with a light touch of fruit and suggestion of sweetness, quenching dry mineral, gunflint. Absolutely stellar.
Played well with salad Nicoise and smoked trout with fennel.

Intense and vivid depth; balanced nectar, citrus, iron and... "Cepacol" cough med?? (perhaps this is the petrol of some Rieslings)
A good glass indeed, but I confess my plebian tastes run more towards the Spatlese/Kabinett end of the alcohol/residual sugar spectrum.
Excellent with food, rich and spicy of a cold winter’s eve.

90 min decant.
Nose: Rich perfumed dark fruit.
Palate: Dense and intense. Core of acid supporting blackberry and plum fruit, saline and licorice, gritty med+ tannic grip to spare. Looong finish. 15% Alc.

Tried this young in the name of science. I'm a Burg guy: if you told me you were pouring a Merlot-Cab Franc blend I'd have said "Meh", but this is impressive, delicious and clearly has many years of positive development to go.

I think it can be enjoyed now with a decant if you don't mind the tannins, but its made for the long haul. If I can keep my hands off them, I'll wait 3-5 years till the next one.

Bright acids balance black cherry fruit up front, with medium grippy tannins following like a background beat. 13.5% Alc. 90% Merlot, 10% Cab franc.
A remarkably balanced and tasty food wine, this played well with a medium-rare steak and grilled mushrooms. As a bonus, a clear head the next day.

A Burg-guy’s eye view of Bordeaux (with grilled lamb)

Rich. Chocolate and blackberries with ample balancing acid and gritty tooth-gripping tannins. 85% Cab/15% Merlot, 13.5% Alc.

This is excellent, a steak wine to rule them all and years of development to go. Even a Pinot person like me can like this one. The welcome spine of acid and tannic grip keeps this ship on an even keel. All that said, I must not be wired for Bordeaux because I’d take a well-made OR Pinot or 1er Burg any day of the week in place of this pedrigreed Cab blend.

That said, I have a few more bottles to sample down the years (in the name of science), and um, I’m not selling them.
