Served to me blind. Piercing acid nose, most enticing. Floral and intriguing. I assumed Hermitage. Delicious, wonderful - would never have guessed it was chardonnay.

Medium ruby in color with slight cloudiness, this wine (mostly Zweigelt) reveals muted aromas of plum, cocoa bean and shaved coconut on the nose. The mouth feel is medium bodied and brings incredible juicy red fruits and spices including cinnamon and minerals. The finish has bright acidity and the juicy red fruits continue on. 13% abv.

Purchased for $17US, this wine has slightly neutral aromatics but the juicy red fruits in the mouth feel are off the charts, making this deliciously drinkable. This is a perfect sipping wine. It's that enjoyable.

Moderate amber in the glass, cloudy af. Nose is clean, showing ripe peach, dried apricot, white florals. Medium-bodied, quite safe orange. Zippy acidity, moderate finish. Not much depth. Overpriced for what it is. The hype is not real.

Burgenland is pretty apt as this could easily pass for high end regional or village Burgundy. Starts a bit spritzy and carbonic, though that blows off with air. Reticent nose. There's a bit of sweetness to the dark plum and cherry fruit, along with good freshness, but it's distinguished by its strong herbal streak along with a dash of pepper that runs through the palate. It's probably most impressive on the back, transitioning well into the finish with fine tannins and plus length.

A wine dinner at Stuva in Ischgl (Stuva, Ischgl): We asked the excellent sommelier at Stuva, Ischgl to go off piste and get us a white wine from Austria. We expected a Riesling a Gruner but alas there comes a 22 yr old Chardonnay. We have to say the experience comes as close as when a night in Rome the excellent sommelier at The Mirabelle told us to forget Gaia & Ray and go for Terlano Chardonnay ( and what a love affair has he sparked there).
An impressive wine, bright, zero oxidation here, and fresh at 22yrs old, and we would have guessed 5 years old. Unapologetically an oaky Chardonnay and even after all this years the new oak is very much prominent as is the polished but big acidity and the bright fruit. We usually don’t like this high oak levels but really this wine carries the buttery vanilla side of the oak very well and frankly this is among the best we have come across. 93-94 and mind blown.

Slightly cloudy and initially with a considerable amount of CO2 (almost feeling like a bubbly...), this becomes quite nice after a while, if a little flat in general. Green-Yellow fruit and some (wet) stone on the nose, rather high acidity with yellow fruit and citrus on the palate, slightly bitter finish.

Biokult 2015 Zweigelt Rosé (SRP $13.99): The Biokult brand is produced by the Michlits family. They are one of the most influential and creative organic wine-growing families in Austria. Zweigelt is Austria’s most widely grown red grape variety and the fruit for this rosé comes from a Demeter-certified Biodynamic vineyard in the Niederösterreich - Qualitätswein appellation. Pale cranberry in color, flavors suggest ripe cherry pulp and fresh raspberries elevated by a springy, citrus-tinged acidity. This wine is fun, straight-forward and lively, with just a smidgen of residual on the back-end. For that reason, it paired very well with my batch of moderately spicy jerk wings and fixings. Overall, this is a rosé that won’t break the piggy bank that you’ll want to pack in your picnic basket or cooler for outdoor get-togethers. Region: Niederösterreich, Austria. Other info: ABV 10.5%, all stainless, cork enclosure.

Half bottles for Thai food offline (King's Heath, Birmingham): There's a lot of charry, toasty oak going on here, along with almonds and a curious hint of formaledehyde. On the palate, this is a big, oaky chardonnary, but it works well, and there's nice fruit concentration.

Compared to 2012 Point a bit warmer and richer on the nose - forest fruit preserve, sweet spices, hints of chocolate, tobacco, wood smoke. Very dense and intriguing. On the palate polished tannins, generous and layered fruit. Slightly spicy, not overly but sufficiently fresh. Very long. 92-93+

Dunkles Rot-Violett. Schokolade, erdige Noten, vergorene Pflaumen mit Asche/Kohle, schwarzer Pfeffer. Angenehme, weiche Tannine. Mittlere Säure mit langem Abgang.
Interessante Cuvée aus Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt und CabSauv. Das Trinkfenster ist noch halb-offen.
