2005 Cheval des Andes

Vistalba Red Bordeaux Blend more

4/24/2010 - the player wrote: 90 points

Intense dark color at the core with shiny ruby and purple rim. Full bodied. Nose very smoky, oaky with dark red fruits. On the palate rich with fruit and minerality, full fruit mid palate but short and dry finish. Not overly complex structure but this wine became a delight to drink after 2 hours of decanting as the tannins softened. Would definitely wait a few years for the wine to evolve before I try it again.

Rating likely to increase with time. This wine is a beast of a Shiraz/viognier. Blackish crimson color, decanted for one to two hours then drank over another hour or two. Nose of blackberries, spices, lilacs. One the palate very thick entry, one feels the power of the alcohol on this wine, black and blue berries mid palate, screaming acidity and complexity, very tannic and long bitter chocolate tinged finish. This wine needs a decade! But still very enjoyable especially with food.

Blackish crimson color. Very powerful nose of blackberries, blueberries, anise, leather and earth. Decanted and aerated for several hours which I think at this stage did more harm than good to the wine as it turned out syrupy and disjointed. Early on the wine was too tight and masculine which I don’t mind but it needed to come around and I think a few more years in bottle will do it justice. Very long finish, full bodied but not in a good place in my book unless this was a bottle variance.

Incredibly fresh, great acidity balancing pear, apricots, peaches, jasmine, paired beautifully with foie GRAS. Nice sweetness but not overwhelming, just right. Very nice finish. What great value

Lovely Gewurtz, sweet honeyed nose of peaches, jasmine, yellow fruits, deep golden color, great acidity, not too sweet, excellent balance and finish. Paired nicely with chocolate mousse although foie GRAS is the best complement.

Drank over New Year's and paired very nicely with foie gras and some soft cheeses. Dark golden color, fragrant nose of honey, white flowers, apricot, pears and orange blossom. Great freshness, not too sweet, very well balanced, very enjoyable and a decent finish.

From magnum. Blackish crimson color. Nose of blackberries, opulent dark red berries, asphalt, spices, minerals. On the palate very powerful and palate staining tannins cloaked by the opulence of the fruit and a long finish. Infanticide at this stage especially from magnum. But truly nice.

Outstanding and one of the readier 95s heavyweights out there. Deep garnet color, blackish at the core. Delicious nose of black currants, cassis, dark cherries, tobacco leaf, graphite and spiced perfume. Decanted and aerated for an hour then drank over 2 hours. Medium to full bodied this is a charmer of a 95 with lots of complexity in the dark fruits on the palate, perfect balance and acidity, envelops the mid and lower palate with dark fruits and graphite, some old leather, and a long finish. Simply marvellous.

Delicious WOTN in a line up against Margaux and Mouton. Blackish ruby color, dense wine, decanted and aerated for an hour then drank over two hours. Medium to full bodied, lots of asphalt, black fruits from berries, currants to cherries and plums, spicy peppery cassis, some leather and masculine notes. Powerful on the palate, secondary notes of dark red and black fruits, superb balance, structure and acidity, finishes peppery long with dark chocolate notes. Fabulous.

Always amazing and first bottle in 3 years. This wine is progressing at a glacial pace. Lots of cassis, black currant, tar and asphalt, dark ruby red, hardly any signs of aging. After two hours in the decanter, the wine opened up and transitioned from a very masculin full bodied wine to a very complex and hedonistic a la LMHB style with a superb mid palate structure, sweet black fruits and a long coffee tinged finish with tannins almost fully resolved. As good as it comes by my book.

Excellent nose dominated by leather, gravel, cigar tobacco and spice. With time in the decanter the fruit emerges to intermingle with the leather, tobacco and gravel. Velvety entry on the palate, full bodied mid palate and well integrated tannins for a long deliberate finish. Not as good as the first bottle I've had but just as enjoyable.

Outstanding wine one of the best 1990s I've had. Crimson color with bricking throughout the body of the wine clearly reflecting the wine's age. This is clearly in its drinking window but has a long life ahead. Decanted and drank over an hour or so. Complex nose of black currant, raspberries, tar, old leather, hints of black olives, jasmin and spice cake. Very dense and complex wine, enters the palate with pure silky fruit, coats the mid palate with multiple layers of black and dark red fruits, but the leather and tar still present which is why this will always be one of my favorite wines. Very dense mid palate, just the right amount of acidity, this wine is dark, full bodied, dense, pure and elegant, and finishes very long. A little less delineation on the wine and a little less purity of fruit say versus the Margaux and Montrose of the same vintage which has me rating the nose closer to 100 points but a slightly lower rating on the palate. Nonetheless an outstanding wine, to be savored on a special occasion.

Outstanding given the vintage. Decanter, let the wine breathe for an hour than drank over another. Blackish crimson with some bricking throughout. Great nose of blackberries, tar, leather, spices and wet earth. Excellent entry on the palate, great acidity, structure, complexity and sweet creamy finish with soft tannins. Medium to full bodied. Wow for the vintage, similar to Latour's effort.

Slightly disappointing after last 2 bottles a few months ago. Ruby red, some signs of aging with bricking on the rims. Decanted and aerated for about 2 hours and drank over another hour or so. Nose of black currants, cassis, and tar. Slightly too linear with good overall balance, no rough edges and a tarry finish with tannins fully integrated. Medium bodied.

More open than the last bottle. Tar, leather, black currant on the nose, fully reflected on the palate. Forward fruit on the palate, nicely balanced, good weight, decent complexity and a satisfying finish with good acidity and tannins well resolved. Not bad at all.

Probably one of the least exciting 95s I've had. The wine however is well built, bricking red and fully mature, with a nose of dust, cedar, black currants and baked dark cherries. A bit lacking in power mid palate, and whilst the acidity is good, the raspberry and tobacco tinged finish is slightly marred by thinning yet present tannins.

Last of my LMHB 96s. Blackish crimson color. Decated and aerated for an hour and drank over 2 hrs. Lovely nose of black currants, gravel, some tar, leather, blackberries. Lush on the palate, super structure, lots of black fruits, some inkiness to the wine, excellent acidity and structure, finishes long with sweet tannins. Delicious and forward.

Decanted and aerated for about an hour. Right from the outset, the nose captivates you with black currants, blackberries, cassis, graphite, old saddle leather. Very deep dark ruby color typical of this vintage which "doesn't seem to age on the eye". Velvety entry on the palate, almost feminine, creeps up on the mid palate with black fruits, spices, graphite, excellent structure overall. Medium bodied the wines finishes long with tannins well integrated and a hint of spice cake. Best bottle to date!

Lovely wine. Blackish crimson, hardly any signs of aging, best bottle to date. Decanted and aerated for 90minutes and drank over an hour. The nose took an hour to fully open up to sweet tobacco, leather, laced with ripe black fruits and truffles. On the palate, the entry showcases the wine's pedigree, pure finesse and class, leather, black fruits, tobacco, truffles and stone perfectly balanced by excellent acidity. The wine is medium to full bodied with soft but present tannins and a decent mocha tinged finish. Excellent wine indeed.

Don't remember much from that evening except that this is probably one of the best 2004s I've had. True class, finesse and balance, excellent structure, medium to full bodied, a tad short on the finish clearly telling me this wine needs more time in the bottle to reach its peak. Beautifully made, artistic.

Slightly disappointing bottle compared to the last two I've had. Nice nose of tar, olives, black currant, dark cherries, mineral stone, ruby color with bricking indicating the wine's age. On the palate nice entry, well balanced, decent fruit mid palate, medium bodied, very good balance but a slightly dry tannic finish. Again I've had much better bottles of this vintage of LMHB.

Best bottle so far. Blackish crimson, hardly any signs of aging, excellent nose of gravel, black fruits, mocha. Silky entry on the palate, beginning to show complexity mid palate, very well structured wine, medium to full bodied, finishes decently long with mocha and well resolved tannins. Excellent wine indeed.

Opened and decanted for an hour then drank over next hour or so. Very earthy nose with cigar tobacco, rocks and hints of black fruits and cassis. Nice crimson color, hardly any signs of aging, velvety entry on the palate, fruit more forward mid palate, nice acidity and balance, firm but integrated tannins, sweet finish for this medium bodied wine. Lovely of not mind boggling.
