My favourite Rioja producer and their newly released (previous was 1996) GR Blanco. Made from 90% Viura & 10% Malvasia, fermented in 153 year old oak vats, aged for 10 years in used barrels and 8 in the bottle. Deep and layered aroma of candied peaches, mushrooms, honey, yellow flowers, beeswax, hints of petrol and walnuts. Palate is complex, harmonious and seductively meditational. Velvety attack braced with incredible fragrance, fresh, pungent and youthful, tangy & zesty acidity, everlasting finish.

1947 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Bosconia

Opened for my dad's 60th birthday. If there are any other members of the '47 vintage out there, let me encourage you to do some comparison shopping of this wine vs., say, '47 Cheval Blanc, and then put on your thinking cap. This is also apropos for the occasion because it will firmly establish that things born in 1947 needn't be old or decrepit -- the color is a deep dark red with bricked edges but no orange or amber; it tastes more youthful than some more recent Bosconias such as the '81, '76, and '68 and kept improving until it was all gone four or five hours after the cork popped.

As always with Bosconia, this wine has a suppleness and smoothness to it that's finer than silk or cashmere or any other fabric you might use as an analogy and is completely weightless on the palate. In contrast to a young wine where you might praise the "stuffing," the remarkable thing here is the utter lack of physical stuffing, as though all that flavor were delivered to you incorporeally. Some of it wafts into your gums like cigar smoke and it tastes intensely of sweet tobacco with a savoriness that I wasn't prepared for, an almost salty shitake-mushroom-broth quality mixed with beef blood and iron, fattened up by a core of ripe fruitiness that still hasn't faded. There is even a bit of tannin left that gives this wine more muscle than is typical for Bosconia.

The contrast with the '68, which is equally memorable in a different way, is interesting. The '68 has even more finesse and is more seamless in its amalgamation of flavors and scents. The '47 is bigger, more powerful. But the '68 is at its peak. I'm not sure this one is. Anyone opening this wine for a birthday this year should consider putting away another for the next "big decade" or two.

I was lucky enough to have some Heredia wines at a tasting, they were just amazing. All of them were decanted properly. I do not know how to explain it, was I just lucky and we got the wines in the right phase and were bottled perfectly? I don't know, but they were just amazing. This wine is a medium bodied wine, the color has lightened some, but is still a medium ruby red with lightening, but NO signs of browning at the rim. It is only 12.0% alcohol. The wine gave off multiple aromas of red berries, spices, perfumey/floral aromas, rhubarb, cassis, slight hints of mint and tobacco. It tasted of red berries, rhubarb, spices, cassis, mushroom and a couple other flavors. Nice long aftertaste! This wine is by no means done yet. Given the acidity, tannin and structure, this wine has at minimum 15 more years, but would not be surprised at all to see it go 25+ more years.

Drank at Stone Barns at Blue Hills commemorating my 35th birthday. From open, it was perfect. 35 years...and aged better than I have! Richer than a classic Burgundy, with earthy spice, this rioja exhibited impressive structure--bright, ripe red fruits, blood orange...and black pepper, cherry smoke and leather.
I hope have as much life left as this wine...wonderful!

Dark ruby color. Amazing nose of brown sugar, mocha, coffee, treacle. Almost creamy aromas - a real toe-curling bouquet. Similar on the palate, but a touch bitter. Elegant, with mocha and crushed malt balls like the old DP Oenotheques. Nose - 7/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 6/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 20/20.

A saber...

Mucho Lopez (Il Corso): Fabulously expressive wide-open nose of brothy mushrooms with perfect integration and finesse on the palate, yet with a level of fruit concentration that exudes umami-laden sap. The fruit is so vivid it shows its youth next to its older brethren but the finesse and polish make it irresistible to drink now. This is THE bargain Lopez for drinking now or cellaring for the future.

Perfect bottle from importer- fill very top shoulder bottom neck- everything about the wine looked good- beautiful garnet /ruby color; decanted and tasted - muted nose as the wine was still too cold from the cellar. This wine got better and better as the night went on... Balance of acidity, mature sweet tannins... Still tasted young- no mustiness; spice, fresh raspberry, with a little fruitcake and herbs... Nice long finish... Again, this wine is 66 years old and tasted fresh as the day is long in summer... Lovely...

In an excellent place. Explosive palate of honey, lemons and some tropical fruits. Just missing the extra complexity of tondonia reserva but at half the price that is understandable. Shame it's becoming almost as difficult to source as the reserva

LdH whites are probably my favorite white wines in the world to drink. They are so complex and it is a joy to drink them right after release or wait another 5-10 years. This being in the oxidative category, I am also a huge fan of sherry, having traveled to Jerez de la Frontera and tasting through raw soleras. You cannot deny the quality to price ratio of wines like this from Spain and even Portugal. Let us hope that these wines stay affordable forever.

Rioja doesn't get any better than this. If tasting scores were comparative to like regional wines, it's be a 100. But...what IS a 100 point wine anyways? I give it a 98 because there is ALWAYS room for imnprovement, right?

NV R. López de Heredia Rioja Blanco 6º Año Viña Tondonia

White Blend more

12/8/2018 - forceberry wrote: 98 points

No age designation, but estimated to be one of the final vintages of 6º Año Viña Tondonia Blanco, making this wine probably something based on vintages 1976-1979, perhaps?

Deep, luminous dark golden color with a concentrated core and an almost colorless, clear rim. The nose is exceptionally concentrated and complex with rich aromas of smoke, sweet creaminess, honeysuckle, some browned butter and oven-fresh brioche, light peanut butter tones, a little bit of lemon marmalade, a hint of apple jam, a touch of melted vanilla sugar and a whiff of heady yellow flowers. An extraordinary nose one could sniff for a lifetime. Contrasting the rich and concentrated nose, the wine is crisp, relatively light-bodied and very playful on the palate with complex and remarkably intense - almost electric - flavors of browned butter and cooked cream, some wizened peach, a little bit of tangy Granny Smith apple, light saline mineral tones, a hint of nutty complexity and a touch of tertiary resinous spiciness. The wine is very high in acidity, lending exceptional intensity, freshness and sense of structure to the wine. The finish is remarkably long with playful, lively and very complex flavors of tart lemony citrus fruits, browned butter, some honeycomb, a little bit of crème brûlée, light steely mineral tones, a tangy hint of Granny Smith apple and a touch of saline minerality.

An exceptional NV Tondonia that was not only very much alive (to the surprise of many attendees in the tasting), but also one of the most impressive examples of aged white Rioja I've tasted. The wine was showing some tertiary characteristics and even some oxidative complexity, but the wine was still in so pristine condition it was almost impossible to believe this really was as old as it was. Seeing how the lost 6º Año Viña Tondonia bottles were made in the early 1980's, there's no way this is younger than 40 years. Simply spectacular stuff. Most likely won't develop anywhere from here, but won't fall apart anytime soon either. The wine was rather pricey at 70€, but managed to deliver for the price, easily. Very highly recommended.

One of the greatest white wine experiences of my life. All the descriptors you may see in previous and future notes - yeah. Interestingly I also get a vanilla note on the nose, which, rather than off-putting, is a wonderful addition to the melange. Outstanding +.
