2006 Haber Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain

I enjoyed a bottle of the Haber Family Diamond Mtn Cab at Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan last night. I recently discovered this wine on my last visit to Napa and was blown away by the quality, so I went to Sparks because they are the only restaurant in Midtown with Haber Family on the wine list. I was anxious to see if it would be as good as I remembered from the winery and I found that it was even better! The nose was huge with lots of rich cherry fruit. And the taste was outstanding with layers and layers of bright fruit and very balanced tannins. The finish went on for a long time. This wine is drinking great now but easily has 10 more years left in it. And I actually liked the 2007 vintage even better than the 2006 when I tasted them side-by-side at the winery. I'm heading back there again soon and I'm looking forward to tasting the 2008's. Try this wine if you get a chance - you won't be disappointed.

The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, blueberry, raisin, plum, high toast, oak and black pepper. It tastes like blackberry, raisin, plum, high toast, oak, black pepper, violet, lavender and walnut. The body is full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

I had the opportunity to taste the 2007 Haber Family Diamond Mtn. along side the 2006 during dinner at the new STK restaurant in Midtown Manhattan. This is the 1st time I've had them together since my visit to the Haber's house last year. Unlike the muscular 2006, which still hasn't reached its peak yet, the 2007 is a pop and pour delight that's ready to drink as soon as it hits the glass. This wine has a big red cherry nose and a fruit-forward taste that's soft on the palate and very drinkable with or without food. I bought a case of the 2007 last year and this botlle made me remember why I did. After tasting the two wines together, I'm going to keep my 2006's in my cellar for a while and enjoy the rest of my 2007's over the next year or two.

I tasted the 2006 Haber Family Diamond Mtn. along side the 2007 over dinner - also see my tasting note for the 2007 bottle. Compared to the 2007, the 2006 has more of a black cherry nose that is more complex. It still has lots of bold tannins that indicate several more years of life - in fact I don't think this wine has hit its peak yet. The 2006 will benefit from decanting - we didn't that night, but the wine definitely opened up in the glass over the hour that we enjoyed it. I had the wine with lamb chops and they made a great combination.

While I initially liked the 2007 best when I first tasted them at the Haber's house last year, I've since grown to appreciate the 2006 even more - definitely one of my favorite wines ever. If fact, I liked it so much that I tracked down 6 more bottles to add to my cellar. This wine is getting hard to find now, but I'd recommend buying some if you can find it.

Another awesome bottle of Haber Family! I enjoyed this one with my son at dinner to celebrate his graduation from college. It was deep, rich and very tasty! An unbelievable cherry nose was followed by that predictable Haber taste that I've grown to love. Most importantly, he kept saying how much he enjoyed it too. Great bottle of wine for a great evening.

Another delightful bottle of Haber Family Cab! I enjoyed this bottle at Ecco restaurant in Atlanta with a buddy. This was his 1st introduction to Haber and he enjoyed it tremendously. Typical big cherry nose and a juicy flavor that's as smooth as always! Definitely one of my very favorite wines in the world.

Really good Cab. Big bold fruit. Ive had other $30-$40 diamond mountain cabs that tasted the same however and the price tag doesn't warrant the bother for me at $80.

Another great night at Sparks steakhouse with Haber Family wine! I took 3 of my buddies to dinner at Sparks - mostly because I know they have Haber Cab on the wine list. We drank 2 bottles of the 2007 Cab (Diamond Mtn.) and they were both spectacular! It starts with a huge, juicy and complex nose - I savored this for 5 minutes before tasting my first sip. And the taste was equally as good - deep cherry fruit with a long finish. The tannins are nice and ripe and don't get in the way. This continues to be one of my very favorite wines in the world!

Each of my buddies enjoyed the wine as much as I did. I'll keep going back to Sparks - the food is very good, but the wine list is outstanding, and the Haber Cab is my favorite on the list.

Beautiful, elegant wine - initial nose of bandaid, decanted over an hour and then other aromas began to emerge - some spice/mint - amazing legs on the side of the glass - silky smooth, almost imperceptible tannins - slightly tart/acidic tone - black cherry - very long finish - very happy to have picked up a case at the PLCB sale price.

Winery Tastings, Napa, May 2012; 5/17/2012-5/20/2012 (Coombsville, Howell Mountain, Moss Creek, Calistoga, Spring Mountain, Rutherford, Pritchard Hill): (A-) Drank from bottle opened the day before. A bit more tart fruit than the Howell, with a different soil character. Tannins a bit more obvious. Red and blue fruit, with nice cooling spices. Great wine.

Decanted about 1 hour. Had this alongside the 2008 Howell Mountain. Both were very pleasant Napa Cabs, with the Howell Mtn. slightly favored due to being better balanced. On the palate this wine showed ample (but fading) dark red fruits, plenty of spice, and acidity that seemed to outrun the fruit. Drink up soon.

I began to evaluate this wine only after 10-15 minutes of being opened. The wine is a beautiful rich dark ruby color in the glass. The nose is is amazing and smelling it is just as enjoyable as drinking it. It seduces you into the glass with dark plum and ripe blackberry fruit aromas in the beginning with spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg evolving into ripe figs, cedar box, and Don Juan Roses and finally to black licorice and suede. The palate is complex as well initially presenting with smooth but intense fruit flavors of black plum, cassis, and ripe blackberries, medium toasty oak, black tea and green peppercorn spice with crushed limestone, and unsweetened dark chocolate evolving to mild dill flavors. It has moderate plus firm tannis with well balanced acidity resulting in a very silky smooth and sexy mouth feel. The finish lasted in excess 90 seconds. I really enjoy smelling this wine just as much as drinking it and consider a huge value at the current price point as it compares to wines with a significantly higher price point. This wine should age beautifully.

Herbaceous red raspberry pie, youthful fruit which is overripe and ready to go! As full bodied as Diamond Mountain can get, and usually I don't think many accomplish the goal. Red cherry cola and fig influence is very present. This is a wine with really good structure, and finishes with a lot of chalky red fruit and stiff oak tannin. I have noticed that these sort of change quite a bit after they have been in bottle for about 10 years, some advices to consume them on the young side if you are wanting the young fruit influences.

Blind. Green pepper and beef on the nose. The palate has some cherries and chocolate. Smooth until the finish, which is a bit bitter.
