Blend of Merlot, Syrah, Callet and Cabernet Sauvignon; aged for 12 months (60% new barrel).
Dark garnet color, thin and translucent rim. Very aromatic nose of red currants, cracked wood and after some aireation, candy aromas. On palate it's fruity, spicy with cherrys, candy, sweet tannins, smooth taste and balsamic notes. Mid bodied with a medium finish that can be a little bit hot. May be too sweet for my taste and can be tiresome after a few glasses but it's a quite a complete, new world wine. Very good QPR.

2011 - Cata #2 (Versió Original): Decanted for 3+ hours. Very dark color, garnet rim, thick legs that stains the glass. On nose is muted, hints of vanilla, medicine¿?, no trace of fruit. On palate it's smooth, fruity, vanilla, medium body. Overall quite a disappointment. NR.

No formal notes. Decanted for 1 hour, this Aalto from the warmest vintage of the past decade showed a dark ruby color with some signs of ageing at the rim. On nose it's very intense, with black fruit, kirsh liquor and scents of black pepper. On palate it's medium to full bodied, powerful, with present but pleasant tannins. Creamy, mouth coating with layers of red compote fruit along with black chocolate made a sensational, although not very complex palate, that may need some food to go with for those who like more freshness. Drink now - 2018.

Ripe black fruit, cinnamon, cocoa... American oak very evident this time. Elegant on palate with pleasant tannins and somewhat red jammy fruit but acidity balances it nicely. Very long finish.
The wine it's in a good spot to drink now. 91-92

Much better than previous bottles anticipated. Drank this one during two days. Modern, powerful wine that offers the usual ripe black fruits, vanilla scent, black pepper... but this time it's more elegant on palate, it has velvety tannins combined with a pungent acidity that makes it delicious by its own and even more with a good steak. Fresher and smooth on day two. Very well done, I would say it's well into drinking window and with at least 5 years being at its peak. 91-92

Opened for 1 hour. Dark. Lots of vanilla on nose, red berries, some black pepper, milky aroma and with more air, coconut, gum and overall fruit turning more mature. Medium bodied on palate, noticiable astringency, firm and sweet tannins, high acidity and a lot of red fresh fruit becoming more ripe with time. Finish is medium but quite expressive and fills the nostrils with red fresh fruit. I found this bottle way less accesible and less expressive than a year ago, maybe more air is needed, although it lacks the power of previous vintages.

2011 - Cata #7 (Can Vilallonga): Double decanted for 3 hours. Medium cherry color, somehow lighter than expected. Somewhat shy nose, aromas of orange peel, Cointreau liqueur, violets, light toast and subtle fruit. As usual, the plate is very elegant, subtle, balanced but generally not very expressive, we did not find such bitterness and cocoa. It may need more cellaring time to give what it has, but anyway like 08, this is a "down" vintage.

Opened for 2+ hours. Dark crimson color. Very smooth nose with dark fruit and scents of toasts and vanilla. The mouth is unbeliveably elegant, like a silk glove, with an amazing balance and a remarkable lenght. This '06 is ready and much better than I expected. Great.

Red cherries and licorice on nose. Palate it's quite tamed now, slightly mineral, plenty of red fruit. Elegant and nice to drink, still has some fat to lose. Overall, a good wine that shows just a bit heavy and in the end, somehow boring. Wait and see.

Half bottle was decanted for 1 hour and rest drank the following day. This wine has a quite young nature: nose it's shut down and slowly offers red fresh fruit, vanilla, red blackberry tart and kirsh liquor. Nose is elegant. On day 2 it evolves to more appealing aromas: more ripe fruit, licorice, earth, chocolate and some mint notes. Palate it's tannic, creamy and very mineral. Acidity is standing out at the moment. However, the wood is still way too noticiable and hiddens the fruit. This is still the same on day 2, when palate add some earthy flavors, minerality but still the wood is covering the fruit and the tannins are still too present. I wonder if there's enough fruit to overcome that. I liked this wine but it lacked the wow factor I was looking for... one last bottle to find out (90-91).

Opened and decanted. Overall very similar to the bottle drank a year ago. Its dark, it's rich, it's powerful, shows strong and intense aromas of black fruit, subtle vanilla, spicy. On palate it's full bodied, present tannins, high acidity and a long finish. Still a long life left. This vintage doesnt let you down, a pleasure to drink and enjoy.

Decanted half bottle for an hour. Consumed during two days. Visually, very dark cherry color. The nose is certainly complex, with plenty of fruit, smoky aromas, smooth and elegant vanilla, spices, chocolate and even eucalyptus. The nose is a swarm of well mixed aromas. The palate is powerful, with a strong entry, lots of fruit, toast, a bit astringency, tannins still present, overall tremendous elegance for such a powerful wine.

Tasted at La Musica del Vi. Dark, very young. Intense nose, kinda different nose, not so aggressive, intense but at the same time elegant. On nose shows its youth: a lot of vanilla, oak (this has been bottled just 2-3 months ago), black fruit, cocoa, black chocolate. On palate it's tannic, powerful, full bodied, medium plus acidity, red fruit, medium to long finish. Seems it will be aproachable earlier compared to similar vintages like 04-05 - this is a trend in 2009 Ribera - and with such acidity and structure it will last for many years. Shows a lot of potential. (92-94)

Double decanted for 6 hours. Minimal change from previous bottle 5 years ago.

Well, this wine has lots going on and everything is BIG. Massive body, concentrated black fruit, spices, wood and minerality... some freshness could help to balance a young bomb about to explode (add some noticiable alcohol if the serving temperature is high). It is a very good, well done wine and my rating reflects that, albeit my palate and preferences are shifting somewhere else. (92-93)

Will leave my 05's and 09's sleep much much longer, hoping...

No formal notes. Had by the glass. Nose is primary made of blackberries, cassis and redberries, smoke. On palate it's remarkably smooth - I was expecting strong tanins -, fresh, balanced, with red fruit, medium bodied and a long finish, which is just a little bit dry. Temperature is critical, as initially and seems better to cool it down a bit and let it grow, otherwise initially it becomes a bit harsh on palate. (92-93)

Pre-vacay tasting (Home): An infanticide but well worth to try it. Decanted for 7 hours and consumed over 2 more hours. Dark, opaque, almost black color, ruby rim. Initially nose shows vanilla, toasts, milky, dark and red fruits, evoluting to smoke aromas and ripe, compote fruit. On palate this is brutal, massive, full bodied, high acidity, quite tannic and astringent but oh, so good and balanced. With time chocolates, liquor on finish. Alcohol goes completely unnoticed. Medium to long finish. Best wine of the night. Plenty of life ahead. (93-94).

Opened for an hour. On nose has an evolving but subtle bouquet that goes from some floral notes and pineapple to a pure vanilla aroma along with mint. On palate it's a kind of different animal. It's a wild wine, pungent and crispy with a high acidity, and some bitterness in mid palate, for a long finish aftertaste. Palate also changes over time and while it maintains that pungent acidity, it also has an unctuous, grassy and oily palate, carrying a notable minerality and at the very end a remarkable and strong citric taste and finish. Easy drinking...I started a bit "meh" with this wine but it certainly improved enough to finish the full bottle by myself. Very good QPR (89-90)

Medium to full body, grassy. Palate with peach and banana flavors, salt-sea. The finish is slightly bitter, but it emphasizes too much on the following days. The finish is quite long, citrus. I was surprised by the low acidity. 88-90

Paired with a fideua along with an albarino, this varietal got everyone's attention and props for the special taste in palate, which is a mix of an accentuated flower flavour, tropical fruit along with an exceptional bitterness and acidity. This just left a smile in our faces after the initial wow.
