Pop and pour at Costa Brava. What a treat to find 20 year old wines on a list. My first Aalto was an 05 so to try one even older was great. Plenty of life left. Super long finish. Just a great wine.

Cork was soft and slightly protruded the cap and it pulverized upon opening. Medium(+) ruby with a brown tinge, vibrant, slow moving tears @14% abv. Aromas of black fruit, farmyard, tobacco(?). Dry, medium(+) acidity, medium(+) tannin, medium(+) alcohol and medium(+)-full body. Palate of black fruit, licorice, grilled meat, pepper. Amazing structure and long finish with lively tannins. At or just past its peak. Drink asap.

This floored me. On the first night the wood influence was quite pronounced, showing as spice and a bit of vanilla. I’m not a fan of excessive oak, but in this case the spice just enhanced the dark fruit and liquorice. Excellent acidity, great balance. In night two, the wood spice had faded and the wine had taken on a mellow richness, with plum, bay leaf, and black fruit all working together well.

Deep ruby, rim tends towards garnet-brown, vibrant while pouring, no discernible tears despite 14% abv. Barnyard, earth, on the nose with bayleaf and leather. Fruit left the ghost years ago. Dry, medium-medium(-) acidity, dry leathery medium(+) tannin, medium(+) alcohol and full body. Palate of blueberry, licorice, leather, and notes of cough syrup (in the good way). Dense and concentrated. Sweet and chalky finish. Drink now. Over/at Peak; pretty spartan core with immense length.

Similar to the last bottle. A gorgeous Tempranillo, lithe and complex, and at its peak on this night.
