2002 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla El NidoRed Blend more |
4/11/2015 - Cheungtp Likes this wine: 94 pointsFinally gotten the chance to try this El Nido, even nicer to share it with good drinking buddies. Big, hedonistic wine but not a fruit bomb like the new world. Even though the wine is predominantly cabernet sauvignon, it contains a very refreshing feel to it that's different from Bordeaux or Napa. Dark fruits, iron, menthol, floral created such a soothing breeze to the nose. Rich, dense, full month feel, with ripe dark fruits but tastes just right without getting to the region where there's a bitter sense like many new worlds give you, savoury touch is refreshing and tannins are chewy, perhaps could be finer but that's just being picky. I'd say this nice wine is somewhere between the old and the new worlds, a pleasant surprise and delicious treat. |

12/26/2012 - Goldstone Likes this wine: 90 pointsBoxing Day Long Lunch at Top Deck, Aberdeen Marina, Hong Kong (Top Deck, Jumbo Floating Restaurant, Aberdeen Marina, Hong Kong): Decanted for 2 hours. Colour has brightened a lot in the past year to be deep ruby red semi-translucent today. Nose remains rather truculent: good depth of black fruit but only hints of the complexity that lurks broodingly in the background.....but at the moment it compares similarly to the Silver Oak 2003 we drank alongside it. The palate has developed from a year ago to reveal very attractive Californian-style Bordeaux fruit power on the black/red end of the spectrum and some hearty oak yet still quintessentially French because of the still-unintegrated tannic frame. Some length and tight-wound resonance that suggests greater things will emerge in the coming years. I suspect that this will way outlive most wines of the vintage but it still needs a 2-3years in the cellar before it starts to show its full potential charm. Everyone preferred the Silver Oak 2003 on the day because of its unpretentious easy-drinking charm.....but I did wave the flag valiantly for this wine (I brought both).

5/18/2013 - Cheungtp Likes this wine: 97 pointsBirthday dinner gathering with 2003 wines (Hong Kong): This wine is simply beautiful. Great profile, dark ruby with no ageing sign at all, long legs. Bouquet is seductive and complex, layers of dark/red fruits, cassis, earth, stone and cigar. Rich, dense, concentrated mouth feel with juicy fruits, licorice, minerals and hint of oak. Jeff Leve once said you can drink or eat it, if you try a bottle of this, you'd know why. Delicious tannins, round, subtle, complimented by a long long finish filled with jam and tobacco leaf. The best is still to come for the 2003 Montrose. Stunning!

6/16/2013 - Cheungtp wrote: 88 pointsPerhaps expectation was rather high on the '96 vintage, thus came out with a fair bit of disappointment this time. Ageing sign was apparent with clear pinkish rim. The bouquet was lacking strength to it, blueberry, herbs, dark coffee, burnt wood notes took some coaxing to show up. On the palate, the spine of the wine was solid, though it seems tannins and acidity have out-lived the fruits. In fact, fruits were very difficult to find, on the nose or palate. Thought '96 should be maturing slowly and many of those primary notes would be there and give the wine an attractive appeal. Yet they are missing. Disappointed because a '95 bottle tried recently had a much stronger, complexed showing than this one. Hoping the next bottle will turn my head around.

4/1/2012 - JamesTye wrote: 90 pointsFrom 750ml. Decanted and served over 2+ hours. Colour is bright, with great red core, no brown. Nose is fascinating. Loads of cassis, some earthiness, perfumed with some Margaux pretty floral notes. Incredibly, a little Cheval Blanc like, thanks to Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with some chocolate and truffle. Palate is equally good. Loads more cassis, pencil lead, some animal notes and a robust core of tannin. Really improved with 2 hours of air. Medium long finish. This is a great wine that punches well above its reputation in this vintage. Plentry of tannin and life left in this wine. Give this at least an hour or more of air before drinking. I think Chris Kissack (aka the Winedoctor) got this spot on by the way. First of case and lots more pleasure to come.

2006 Château Clerc MilonPauillac Red Bordeaux Blend more |
8/16/2013 - Cheungtp wrote: 92 pointsA very nice bottle, though still quite young, it's drinking very well right now. There are aromas of blackberry, cigar box, licorice, cedar, earth and hints of barnyard and crushed stone. Very good nose. Although palate is a bit tight, it exhibits creamy texture with notes of tobacco and red cherry, mid-palate is a bit thin. Not as tannic as originally thought, round and polished, though the finish does carry a sense of heat and bitterness. The wine is at a good place right now, yet can develop further with some more time in the cellar.

5/18/2013 - Cheungtp wrote: 88 pointsBirthday dinner gathering with 2003 wines (Hong Kong): Its unfortunate that this great wine didn't show its true form tonight, seems like its not ready for business. Tight, green notes and muted fruits and smoke. On the palate, not much fruit or secondary nuances, yet rather spicy. Hope this is just an off bottle, and will have better showing next time.

2/27/2014 - Cheungtp wrote: 92 pointsMontrose tasting with Herve Berland (HK Wine Vault): The 2008 Montrose is a very good one, but trying it after the 2010 and 2005 vintages certainly make it appear a notch below. Dark ruby, aromatics of fresh red fruits, spice, licorice, hint of mint and floral. Not as complex or deep as the other two vintages, but most approachable among the three and very pleasant. Medium mouth feel, red fruit dominated palate with notes of tobacco and orange zest. Tannins are not intruding, but carries a slight greenish note. Alcohol note seems a bit disjointed and can use some time to integrate.

3/15/2014 - ilee Likes this wine: 97 pointsDinner at home with Mrs L, PH, VK and Ms C (At home): Decanted for 2 hours. This is one of those wines that does everything right. Pungent perfumed nose, rich dark berry flavors, plush mouthfeel, rounded tannins, faultless performance. I particularly liked the sweet hints of incense bobbing up occasionally amidst the stony, smoky endless waves of dark fruit. Just when you start to think this wine is already very enjoyable, the ever-present (though hardly obtrusive) tannins remind you that you've just popped the cork on a juvenile. For those of you friends out there who have a few bottles of this and want to try one for yourself by all means do so, but the majority of your bottles should be left for the 2030's when it will be stupendous. I've decided that if HK is underwater by then, I'll live on a little boat with a small stash of this wine safely stowed below deck...

7/19/2014 - Cheungtp Likes this wine: 95 pointsA beautifully aged Bordeaux that offers immense drinking pleasure, which many CT tasters seem to agree on. The attraction begins with the first pour, gorgeous clear ruby color, follows up with aromatics of red fruits, graphite, tobacco leaf, spice and bit of leather, awesome stuff. Medium mouth feel that is pure and clean, fruity notes still remain, plus bitter tea leaf and earth. Tannins are all softened up, and finish is long lasting. This is at its peak and definitely worth trying and enjoy.

1/2/2015 - DrinkBordeaux wrote: 94 pointsDecanted 3 hours. Dark purple. Gorgeous nose of blackberry, violet, truffle, and dark chocolate. Velvety mouthfeel, rich and elegant. Medium-plus finish. Tannins still need a lot of time to soften. Highly enjoyable. One of the better '08s I've tried recently. While this vintage may not possess the power and complexity of the '09 and '10, this is highly enjoyable and a great VCC.

1/25/2014 - Life At Your Leisure 🍷 Likes this wine: 95 pointsDark crimson color turning rust at the rim with a nose of dried herbs, currants, cola and Earl Grey tea. The palate is medium-bodied with an ultra-silky texture featuring dried currant, saddle leather, pipe tobacco, and smoke. Finishes long on refined tannin with hints of dried thyme. Amazing wine - graceful and elegant. Drink now until 2019. 95 Pts.

6/23/2015 8:24:00 PM - Hi LSDUK1, sorry for the delay, I was traveling and didn't have continuous internet access. Not sure if you have tasted this wine already, if you did hope you've had a great tasting experience. Otherwise, I'd suggest to give it a 2/3 hours of decanting at the minimum. It's a powerful wine and certainly can stand up to more aging time, so for present time, best to give it some aeration time to open up. Cheers
