2/28/2011 - cosmin_grozea wrote: 89 pointsThe wine has a clear light red Pinot Noir like color, with a brownish rim. The nose appeared closed to me, showing dusty and old cellar aromas, with earthy mushrooms. This wine needs at least a couple of hours to breathe. In the mouth the wine explodes with flavors. A medium bodied wine showing a lively acidity, with a sweet mouth-feel sensation and distinctive aromas of pure red cherry and earth. The finish is medium with a minty good coffee aftertaste. 89-90 points |

9/22/2016 - Neurowine1 Likes this wine: 90 pointsThis is very nice. Pretty spot on and cleanly made Rioja that does an interesting straddle of old school/new school. It really pulls nicely from both styles with vanilla-y oak and leather, but also ripe and fruit forward. There is really nothing not to like here. Remarkably fresh for 17 years and just a little bricking on the margins speaks to its age. I think will actually improve in the next 5 years and I will hang onto the second btl. Bravo! |

11/1/2020 - Harley1199 Likes this wine: NRA quality Rioja wine. Long, wide and fresh. A bit modern but in a fair point. It is heavy but fresh offering balance although I would like more conjunction. To be polished. |

12/2/2013 - up4wine wrote: 86 pointsThis Rioja is rated well, but I do not really concur. There is a bit of a harsh finish that detracts from the overall impression. The color is darker than I would expect from a 100 Tempranillo, which make me think it is a blend with a dark grape. I may be way off base, here, since the bottle does not list the composition. Nevertheless, I think the Tempranillo is being overwhelmed, and not in a particularly good way. |

11/24/2012 - up4wine wrote: 88 pointsNice bright fruit on both nose and palate just out of the bottle, pop and pour. Strong nose of cherries and a very smooth and integrated mouth feel. After sitting in the glass a while the wine does not improve, but starts a slow descent into less interesting territory. The sweetness starts to dominate and the finish becomes short and without the expected Rioja character. We compared this wine to a 1997 Rioja that started slow, but gained prominence and a nice rustic blend of cherries, earthiness, and an acid level positive for food. The price difference of $20 for the Puelles and $30 for the Solar de Ranchez pretty much sums up the ranking I would give the two wines. As is my usual conclusion, Mr. Parker generally overrates wine relative to my taste. |

1/18/2013 - up4wine wrote: 88 pointsVery enjoyable; smooth and well integrated with a pleasant nose, but not a standout for Rioja of the Gran Reserva persuasion. There was good, clean fruit, but not as bright as some other great ones. There was interest on the nose, but not a lot of variation and nuance. |

7/5/2015 - Jonny d Likes this wine: 91 pointsDecanted just over an hour, and this wine was really singing. Served with a variety of Piedmontese-style Toma cheeses and Tallegio. Orange-tinged medium-red color with a lot of transparency. Wide rim. Dried raspberries. Dusty, earthy notes that played off the cheese well. Orange peel notes at the finish-- but no bitterness in them. Nice, soft, well-developed tannins. Old school Rioja. Last of three bottles. Sad to see them gone. This was a steal at $20-- huge QPR in this wine. |

10/2/2015 - bravo.solares wrote: 87 pointsA bit disappointing, especially compared to other Riojas. Would rather spend a few more bucks and drink a Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza instead. Nose was pleasant - usual leather and cigar box of aged Riojas. Palate was disappointing and uninteresting though. Little going on. |

2/7/2018 - bravo.solares wrote: 88 pointsReasonable QPR at just over $20, but I would rather pay a few more dlls and drink, say, a Vina Ardanza - a much better wine, especially if aged a decade or so after release. Or I would rather step it up yet another notch and get a Muga Seleccion Especial. This wine works best with food, thanks to its good acidity - refreshing, great for cleansing the palate. But it drinks a little flat - just not terribly interesting. Refreshing acidity, some new oak, and subued if juicy red and black fruit. Doubt additional cellar time would help much. |
