3/31/2024 - jim_crane wrote: NRIn a really nice spot right now. Day 1 - decanted for about an hour. Nicely balanced acidity and tannin. Warm fruit. Humming. Day 2 - held together. A bit drier. Just a nice, even Italian red. Nothing pronounced and nothing understated. |

1/17/2021 - jim_crane Does not like this wine: NRShowed Albarino but then turned into a beer-like flavor. Chose this to pair with paella. Failed experiment, but not because of the paella. |

2/27/2010 - jim_crane Likes this wine: NRAll In The Family: South American Wine Tasting (Arcadia Fine Wine (Kate's House)): Nearly WOTN. Out of all the wines at the event, this wine would have been the most convincing as an old world example. The nose displayed a rustic earthiness that I find on examples of Italian wines that I love. I was immediately drawn to this. And it was big. Much bigger than I expected. But then it fell off a bit which took it out of contention for WOTN. Still, I liked it for the earthy, dried fruit palate and soft tannins that gave it a smooth texture. B+. |

5/28/2021 - jim_crane wrote: NRWith Jaime. Really good. Aged but not tired. We do think that the hedonism from a cult wine is gone. We may have been more impressed had this been younger. Not nuanced like an aged wine might show but not out of sorts. Hmmm. |

2004 O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountainmore |
6/28/2010 - jim_crane wrote: 91 pointsClear, dark plum red and still dark at the rim. Nose of cassis, fresh berry and menthol. Very ripe but not showing like a fruit bomb. Some heat on the nose develops with some air. Full-bodied and extremely dry, with gripping tannins. More fruit on the palate showing mostly cassis. Some subtle wood. Solid finish. |

6/19/2010 - jim_crane wrote: 90 pointsStaglin Vertical (2000-2004) (Chino): Decanted for 1 1/2 hours. Dark garnet. Aromas of tobacco, smoke, vanilla and pure fruits. This wine has 15.1% alcohol, but it did not seem hot on the nose or palate. It was full-bodied and the alcohol was evident in the glycerol roundness, but it was well-balanced. The black fruits were a bit candied with a chutney note. The wine was creamy. This was made in a very New World style. |

2/25/2019 - jim_crane wrote: NRAgeless. It’s either got a ton of years left to develop or it’s just plastic. It shows some good points. Rich, fruit forward, lots of oak. But I’m not sure it will settle down. So if you want to party, pop the cork. If you want nuance. Look elsewhere. |

6/23/2010 - jim_crane wrote: 88 pointsJ & G Steakhouse. W Washington, DC. Dark red. Brief decant. Powerful, fresh nose that is extremely oaky nose that also showed mint chocolate, eucalyptus, earth and vanilla. Not that much fruit here at all. The palate is similar with tons of oak and vanilla. A bit like drinking fresh tree trunk. Where is the fruit? Is this too young or is this just typical Silver Oak? |

4/21/2021 - jim_crane wrote: NRHaven’t had much Schrader. I’ve been sitting on it. Jaime came over with some leftovers, top notch remnants. He said “pop that 12 Schrader”. So we did. Straight pop and pour. Solid juice. Fleshy body, balanced, fresh fruit. Smooth. Gratifying. Don’t expect it to improve. It’s fantastic now. Worth it. |

6/19/2010 - jim_crane wrote: 89 pointsStaglin Vertical (2000-2004) (Chino): Decanted for 1 1/2 hours. Dark, deep garnet. The nose is closed with a dominant heat note. Eventually, some of the eucalyptus shows through as well as a slight dark chocolate aroma. Truly, this seems shut down. The palate is astringent and out-of-balance. The flavor profile was challenging for me to discern. This is simply too tight. It's a massive wine, and perhaps will improve with more time in bottle. |

9/15/2009 - jim_crane wrote: 93 pointsDecanted for 45 minutes. Blood red core with a brick red rim. Dense but clear. Nose took some coaxing but revealed black fruits, chocolate and eucalyptus. Also displayed a touch of earthiness with a floral note. Medium to full bodied. The tannins need to settle a bit more, but the acidity is very nice. The fruits flavors are a backdrop to the meaty earthiness. The wine left a smoky finish with excellent length. This has the backbone to age. It would be fabulous with filet mignon or a stinky cheese. A 93 now, but could rate higher with a bit more age. |

8/29/2016 - jim_crane Likes this wine: 93 pointsDecanted 30 minutes before tasting and then consumed over three hours. Nose of anise, fresh oak, menthol, but all muted. Full body, dry, dark, dark fruit. Blackberry and dusty blueberry. Pleasantly gripping. Smoke and loam. Softened over the evening. I really like this wine and will likely love it when it's a bit older. Happy I have more. |

6/19/2010 - jim_crane Likes this wine: 93 pointsStaglin Vertical (2000-2004) (Chino): Decanted for 1 1/2 hours. Dark, deep garnet red. Rim indicates the age, but the wine still appears youthful. The nose shows eucalyptus, herbal notes, fresh tobacco, cedar and black fruits. Medium-to-full bodied and extremely balanced. The tannins are silky. The palate showed black fruits, plum, anise and a sweet tobacco element. The wine was dynamic in its power, ebbing and flowing in intensity through the long finish. |

2/6/2010 - jim_crane Likes this wine: 96 pointsDouble decanted. Open for about 3 hours before refilling the bottle. Clear, deep purple-red with a red rim. Nose showed cedar, cassis and some mint. Palate was full of Rutherford dust and had intermingling fruit and earth elements that kept alternating as the dominant force. Extremely balanced. This was just sailing along. Can't wait to open another bottle. Decant time was ideal. |

6/19/2010 - jim_crane wrote: 91 pointsStaglin Vertical (2000-2004) (Chino): Decanted for 1 1/2 hours. Dark, deep garnet. The nose is wide-open with eucalyptus, smoke, black fruit and freshly sawn wood. This has a medium-body but it is tannic monster. At least, the tannins are less integrated than the 2000. The palate displays anise, earthy elements, plum and dark chocolate followed by a soft, lengthy finish. |

1/4/2019 - jim_crane Likes this wine: NRThis is drinking extremely well. It is rich, balanced, and vibrant. The tannins are silky and show the expected Rutherford dust. Juicy dark fruit compliments the earthiness. Finishes with menthol and eucalyptus. A little heat but not distracting. Totally ready to drink now and seems like it could hold up for several more years. |
