4/6/2024 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 97 pointsHoly smoke, Batman! This stunning beauty is loaded with every onomatopoeia imaginable. Bam! Boom!! The middle palate is absolutely magnetic. Usually Mancini is more berry focused, but not this vintage. Cherries jubilee, blood orange, raspberries, soy sauce, fruit cocktail and star fruit. Exceptionally long, with a panoramic palate throughout. I see no reason to wait, nor to rush. The requisite acidity is there, just not as much as in the past. This is just gorgeous. Also, Mancini was planted in 1922. This particular vintage is the 100th anniversary. What a way to celebrate! I can’t wait to indulge in the other ‘22s from the Piner-Oliver ranches. This is forward, yet still retains the finesse one would expect from the modern Carlisle’s. Picked earlier than most years and ‘22 was not kind to many a winery in my ‘hood. However, that was not the case - thus far - for Carlisle. Medium to full-bodied. Drink now - 2036. |

4/21/2024 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 95 pointsVibrant and showing obvious depth. Medium to full-bodied, with a salinity and slight viscosity; loaded with purity. Long and focused. Papaya, Meyer lemon, grapefruit and orange blossom. This has cut and remains layered throughout. Such a stunning wine and I would love to taste this next to the alluring ‘18. This will age quite gracefully. A delightful melange of Gruner picked at two different passes, which adds another form of complexity. Drink 2026 - 2038. |

Ends with a 15-20 second finish with raspberry and boysenberry notes. Still a bit tight and needs more time in the decanter or aging. |

8/19/2023 - Geoff Likes this wine: 93 pointsLighter color and body than usual, but still plenty of stuffing. Beautiful nose, floral with both red and dark fruits. Fine tannins, balanced, smooth on the tongue with a long polished finish. Really nice wine at a great PQR. |

4/1/2023 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 94 pointsAnother 2021 that is better on day two, this has so much depth and presence. Sonoma Valley/Dry Creek Valley, with ten percent Petite Sirah from the latter, this is more masculine than the elegant 2020. Yet, so ridiculously good. Cherries, blackberries, garrigue, dried rosemary and liquid rock. The body is full and the finish is long. There’s some polished tannin. Another one to age, this is a crazy value. Finishes long. Drink 2025 - 2034. |

4/1/2023 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: 100 pointsPerfection is an intimidating concept for both the winery and consumer. In this case it is transcendental. Otherworldly. Goddess. Unfortunately, too small of a production. At a measly 220 cases, there are only so many produced. Yet, when you get to experience a Zinfandel of this ilk - of this caliber - your life has become that much more enhanced. Eucalyptus, blueberries, tea leaf, bay leaf, cherries, tangelo and anise. I could inhale this for hours on end. The palate has the most astonishing fruit, with layers unfolding, and this massively balanced acidity. The texture reminds me of a ripe vintage, young Barolo. The finish echoes along and goes on forever. Better on day two, this absolutely deserves some time in the cellar. I would be shocked if another Zinfandel of this echelon is ever achieved again. Montafi was the first Carlisle that I ever had back in early 2008. It was an ‘05 Tom Feeney (Montafi) and it opened this new world of Zinfandel for my younger palate. The 2021 is beyond that lovely bottle. This just raised the bar. It is not as audacious as the stunning ‘19, but definitely more refined and epic. Drink 2025 - 2037. 11 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (2) |

3/9/2023 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: NRTasted from barrel 5/28/22. 98 - 100. This has eucalyptus for a fortnight and stunning dark berries, with red as well. This is looking to be the best Montafi yet. (Potentially the best Zinfandel ever from Mike and Jay - which is stating a lot!). |

9/9/2023 - Matt Scott Likes this wine: NRI drive by and check out Mancini often. It is at a somewhat busy corner in far west Santa Rosa, yet this is a grand cru, old vine Zinfandel dominant vineyard. One with so much history, and beautiful, gnarly vines. To be perfectly transparent, I am very obsessive with the vineyards that Mike works with in the Piner-Olivet area of the Russian River Valley AVA. From what I have experienced, the finest Zinfandels out California are grown in that particular AVA. Carlisle works with the best vineyards within this relatively small area - this also includes Papa’s Block and Two Acres. With that stated, 2021 is (bold statement here) the finest vintage for Carlisle. The 2021 Mancini is astonishing. On day five it is stunning. Almost salacious. This is close to perfection. Jay Maddox, who would eschew this statement, is one of the best winemakers to ever touch a Zinfandel grape. The next round of ‘21s will released in December and I am giddy for them. I tend to engage (or should I state gulp?) in more Carlisle than wines from any other winery every year. The 2021s will eclipse my previous vintage indulgences. I have annihilated six bottle of this so far. It seriously changes every single time and the acidity is perfect. Better than ‘16, ‘18, ‘19 and ‘20 - which were all amazing. Mancini is the acid queen and has become a true icon. 7 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |
