2022 Shea Wine Cellars Rosé of Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard

Yamhill-Carlton more

9/7/2023 - oldwines Likes this wine: 90 points

Tasted at the winery. This Rosé spent 8 hours on the skins and then was aged in both neutral barrel and steel tank, consisting of mostly Wadenswil Clone Pinot Noir grapes from the estate’s 149 Pinot acres. It is a nice copper-salmon color. It has bright acidity and a nice strawberry and raspberry fruit nice mineral notes as well. It has a certain inner sweetness yet no measurable RS. Nicely done!

For Shea standards under performs. Floral, mushrooms, earth and strawberries. Not bad for the price.

Nose is reticent on PnP but it does smell young and fresh, traces of oak overlaid with rich purple black fruit. Palate is a ton of ripe fruit, dark cherry, blueberries, sweet berries almost bordering on a blackberry. Very forward and hedonistic. I'd imagine a little more settled down in 2-4 years.

2021 Shea Wine Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Shea Vineyard

Another proper Shea Estate release! True to the varietal, true to the terroir of the site, true to the house style.

Starts out with a really nice tension between the freshness and purity of the fruit pulling at the dark, brooding, manly aromas that linger under the surface.

For now it's very young. There's nothing wrong with drinking this wine right now but it is definitely built for the long haul and will reward patience.

A little cinnamon spice and tree bark earthiness promises to develop into the future. It's a highly structured line with pretty tight, short-grained tannins. But the wine presents as a unified package, so this structure should really unfurl nicely as time goes on.

My guess is that The prime drinking window on this wine will start at about 2025 and will hold a nice solid plateau until 2032. At that point it will start to get pretty tertiary, but it certainly won't fall off a cliff, and I'll probably keep one of these around to see what it looks like in 2040.

Tasted at the winery. The Pinot’s from Shea are distinctly different than many of the other Pinot’s we tried this week (with a couple exceptions). They are bolder, more “masculine”, darker and more fruit forward…What I sometimes call Pinots for Cab lovers. This appears to be the result of several winemaking choices. In the vineyard, they pick much more ripe than some of the others we have spoken to, around 26° Brix rather than the ~24° others have told us (resulting in ABV’s of 14-14.5% vs. others at 13-13.5%). Also they employ both pumping over and pushing down of the cap during fermentation, resulting in more extraction. They use both free run and press wine in their final blends which are aged in higher percentages of new oak barrels (20-60% in the wines we tasted vs. some others at 0-40%). The sum total of these practices makes for a wine that is usually not my favorite and my scores do reflect that. There is certainly a market for this style, others may like it more than I do. They are not poorly made in any way, just a bit more “manipulated” rather than “made in the vineyard with as little winemaking interference as possible to better express the terroir”
This was one of the nicer wines we had from Shea. 13.3% ABV, grapes underwent a cold soak before being innoculated to start fermentation. With aging in 20% New French oak barrels. Medium ruby to Garnet color. Bright acidity and fruit with an elegant balance and texture. More red fruited than the some of the other Pinots at this sitting. Moderately long finish.

Made with 22% whole clusters, 33% new French oak Barrels and comes in at 14.3% ABV. Mostly (maybe all) Pommard clone. This is another “Big” Pinot but it does lean to the “pretty” side of things. Medium+ acidity and quite high tannin for Pinot, almost a modern Nebbiolo-like mouth feel. Lots of rose petals on the nose, Red cherry fruit, earthy. Long finish. Needs time in the cellar.

Cork was soft and the wine was sour. Not corked in the usual sense, but flawed. There was no capsule, but instead a brittle plastic (wax?) seal only over the cork (not over the lip of the bottle). I suppose I could have gotten a corkscrew through the seal, but I pried it off with a knife. It broke into several pieces that flew everywhere. Wax/plastic seals like that are a nuisance.

World of Pinot Noir - 3/5/23 - quick impressions: Pomegranate and fig fruit with deep layers of spices, black tea and red florals. Broad and expansive on the mid-palate, with silky polish and long depth on the finish.

Tasted at the winery. While I am less of a fan of the Shea style of Pinot, I found this Chard to be very interesting. This has an interesting Elevage, it was 17% in cement egg, 6% in new French oak, 77% in previously used French oak. Full Malolactic fermentation. There is a slight amount of matchstick/reduction. Very bright with acidity. there is a nice roasted almond element along with pear, white peach and creamy citrus. It was complex and fairly long on the finish.

Okey-dokey, a smokey year wine that is...JUST FINE! Reduced price but not quality. Bright red cherries, raspberries, spices with great lift and length. I'd buy more if we had room.... I'd also drink in the next year or two to make sure any hints of smoke don't become more obvious.

Actually a bottled barrel sample.
Medium nose shows earth, orange zest, funk, raspberry, feels Burgundian. Palate matches, adds dark fruit, keeps the acidity and balance, funk is still there, it's very young obviously. Different style for Shea Vineyard, from the highest elevation of the vineyard, picked earlier than most. Should be very interesting down the road.

Translucent strawberry red. Vibrant, earthy, spicy nose. Precise on the palate, bright, strawberry, cherry. Fine tannins, nice acidity and balance. Finishes long and gradual, earthy, mellow red fruits. Bright and lively. Deepens a bit with air. Classic Oregon Pinot Noir. Drink next 5 years.
